Flows into Norfork tailwater just below the dam Under 16s only. Great place to sightfish for big bows and browns. You will have a blast and your kids will enjoy it immensely. My best fish guiding was this one Carry a big net LOl

Ok most of you have seen me mention my gorgeous new wife Bec. But here's her youngest, Im now a stepfather of 3, Lynsey, who has got right into this fly fishing thing. She ties, spends a lot of time hanging around in the shop helping out and yep fishes pretty good too Here's Lynsey with her first 2 fish on Dry Run Creek (and justthink I have 5 more years fishing this with here LOL). She has lots way bigger fish than this too. Hell of a place. Ooops I thought we had edited out the drop of rain in front of her nose lol Cheers Steve

Taneycomo Night/Fall rod discussion

Thanks for that Jerod, we always appreciate sending people off fishing with a smile on their face. What's important is you end up with what suits you and your budget. Michael's point was right about the X, its pretty stiff (though a Clouser line loosen's it up somewhat LOL) I'd lean towards the TiCR/Launch/A2, hard to fault any of them. After that is personal preference. PS: hey Michael, everything good? I missed you in the store last week/week before. Cheers Steve -

We have a webstore that can take care of you anytime day or night. No tax since your interstate LOL Incidentally it looks like the pressure is coming on webstore sales and sales taxes, from what i was reading over the weekend. Not much longer every webstore sale will be taxed _ sad to say. Then again I hope it gets tangled up in congress. NP Greg, machined reels are nice, but the Tioga generally retails $155 and the $1580 is $99. Good for the money. Vanven your right the Launch Outfits go 5wt, 6wt and 8wt. We sell them too. The 1650 will hold a WF6F and 100y of backing, so a 7WF and 75 roughly. The 1680 holds 200y plus an 8wt so 225 and WF7F. Maybe a little big but i think it would balance a TiCR 7 nicely. Or you could go to a 6wt. I'd be looking at the TiCR (the X is pretty stiff) as well as well as the Launch etc. Consider also A2 7wt nice rod plenty of butt. Cheers Steve -
Hey Robert, good to meet you, as you say great to put faces to names. Saw your truck at Norfork, slow fishing then went to rim after lucnh nd got into some fish. They didn't run Bull until 3pm so got in a nice day of fishing. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news LOL See you again and see if my water predictions are are better lol Cheers

Any of tghose rods would work nicely. But Ive got to correct Greg slightly. The 1580 is a cast reel (sealed drag) but at $99 prices. Way under the Tioga etc. I think Greg is thinking of the 2500 series which is over $300 and machined and my reel of choice currently. NP mate The 1580 is one of the few truly Large Arbor reels at that price. Cheers -

Ease up those night-time tangles with your running line. This is the stripping basket the Californian saltwater flyfishing underground has been using _ now available across the country The Stan Pleskunas Hip Shooter. No more tangles, no more rocks nice and easy. If anyone wants one $49.95 _ Ive bought mine
-
maybe to throw 120' but this line is good however your casting anyway if someone wants to rock along we can play with them and then they can report too cheers steve
-
OK Dano, you could load it up with a 120' Rio Outbound, integrated shooting head line. A session or two on how to cast these and you will throw further than ever before. But it might be a tad much line for that rod, which is pretty slow (not bad but slow) Ive been using my Outbound 6wt floater for white bass lake fishing, tossing a size 2/0 Bob Banger saltwater popper 80'. In my hands a slightly stiffer rod is better Im using a TiCR. In the right hands 120' is achievable off the grass with no fly, I kid you not. These lines add 10' to 20' to most casts. The technique is slightly different but these style of lines are really are a shooting head, so limited back casts and the ability to shoot are their forte. Available in floating and sinking intermediate and 330gr 6-7-8 in the store. I have some personal lines for demo if anyone wants a lesson on dealing with these unique lONNNGGGG casting lines. Funnily enough I was thinking these were great lake lines, but my guess is these could be very cool nightime lines for Taney and Bull _ simply because you don't have to do a lot of backcasts-hauling to cast goodly distances. They are made for covering water and shooting heads etc come from the East Coast saltwater scene and refined in casting comps. don't use them at Rebar tho, you'll be in the trees on the other side _ Im not kidding. Cheers Steve

Couple of excellent places for this sort of information www.sexyloops.com www.http://p222.ezboard.com/fflyfishingarkansasandmissourifrm14 both have specific casting boards with lots of good advice and way better casters and instructors than me too cheers

I remember trying to do a qualifying cast (well before I relearnt to cast) for one of the qualifying events for the ISE shows (Best Of The West) it was the year of the infamous white stick. Very sad result. Incidentally Chad johnson (one of guides and shop guys) were messing around with a TCR and an Extreme Distance 105' line. Fist time I measured over 100' (103' and a bit) Chad hit 106' and a bit. I still say his was wind assisted LMAO. Think we are going to be doing a bit more of this messing around at the store with this stuff. One of the real tricks is knowing just how much line to carry without losing linespeed. Im still learning LOl Best of luck Zach

Might even end up as neighbors John, was house hunting not too far from your place in Cotter last night. I'd have been getting in more "research" too but i keep getting off work about 30 minutes before the water has been rising at Roundhouse. I gotta go to Rim instead. Tuesday Bec and fished at the Dam when they turned the water off, (it was a quick change of plan we geared up for 2 units) she got some nice fish on dries, and got busted off by a beauty. Then, after the water came on, head down stream. If your willing to move you can get a lot of wading done in these generation patterns. Much more fun than Beaver or Taney, where you get blown out. And I'm learning these backroads too now LOL We also have a weekly report (and much more info videos articles) every week in our weekly email Might even end up as neighbors John, was house hunting not too far from your place in Cotter last night. Ive been taking over my stepdaughter Lynsey a few times, her best is a fat 22" but she has lost a couple of pigs. Give me a call next time your over. Its fishing pretty good. Cheers Steve

Taneycomo Night/Fall rod discussion

Lot of choice between 6-8wts. I don't think Ive found a trout I couldn't deal with on a 6wt. The main reason to go heavier would be fly size, BIG streamers etc etc. Then again if your a superlative caster you can probably deal with that too. If your mortal like me a heavier rod makes bigger flies easier. Next question what tippet size. You would need way softer hands than me to fish 6x on an 8wt, 6x on a 6wt can be stretching it too. Another consideration is what else you might fish with this outfit rather than only dragging it out at night. Look at other fishing options. A 6 can be a great white bass/smallie stick, plus do double duty on high water nymphing or streamer fishing during the day If you think you might do more largemouth fishing, or have some trips planned down towards the salt then you might think about its role there _ An 8wt can take you a lot of places. Looking at the question this way might lead you to open up your budget another $100 or so. There is some very very nice rods just over your budget. I would have been tempted to add the Scott A2 and Sage FLi both of which I rate extremely highly but both are in the mid to high 200s rod alone. Anyway in your price range you have got many choices, all the TFOs, Sage Launch, Scott V2. For me to get max-bang for your buck I'd be looking a lower priced reel. Ross Worldwide, which have pretty decent drags inherited from older ross models, reels will run 49-69 ish depending which model. That's leaving you a $230 budget on a rod. Hence my suggestions. You mention backbone, which to my mind anyway excludes the softer rods like TFO Finesse's or similar. I'd be looking for fast stiffish rod, TFO TiCr, their 6wt is very nice. The Launch's still have a decent backbone but a more moderate action if you prefer that. If you get a chance come by the store and cast some different stuff and see which you might prefer. Cheers Steve -
The job you might want _ the pay you might not LOl That was Bryce, who is still at the Dam Store Im at a new shop over in Cotter now Cheers

LOl Zach two reasons i know a bit about this stuff 1)I'm a gear head 2)I get paid to know about this stuff (a) buying for flyshops and I write a column on gear for Australia and Nz's biggest FF magazine So here's the link to the windwalker http://www.fishpondusa.com/windwalker.cfm# Cheers Steve
-
Yep you can, comes with a neckstrap so you can wear the front pouch along, the backpack alone or both together. If you need a slightly larger front pack for gear the windwalker is the same style just bigger _ and $40 cheaper. Im upgrading our webstore currently Zach and neither the double haul/windwalker are up yet so i cant show you piccies there but we have both and you can view here http://www.fishpondusa.com/packs.cfm cheers steve

Gday, well we have started out our new weekly e-magazine from the shop _ the Mountain River Journal. If anyone is familiar with the old Beaver Dam Store Report, you will get the idea, hopefully bigger and better. It’s not your everyday fishing report, nor a bunch of advertising destined for your spam bin.. The Journal is going to be like nothing you have ever read from a fly shop on a weekly basis _ fishing tips and tactics, river conservation, videos, news, humor, gear reviews, probably more humor, anything we think a fly fisher needs to read, plus advice from our guide team, staff and customers on current river conditions. Yep we will be featuring products for sale in the store (no such thing as a free lunch), but its going to be a fun ride. And for those that know me _ yep it will definately have a slightly twisted Aussie sense of humor If your interested click the link to sign up Journal@mtnriverflyshop.com Cheers Steve

Generation/when to place bets...
Steve Dally replied to JonT's topic in Beaver Tailwater/Upper White River
Hey Jon, Beaver probably is the most consistent/predictable of all the tailwaters, not that that is saying much. But with only 2 generators SWPA uses Beaver to supply peak demand only. So that is morning and night in the winter (when people are heating their homes etc) and in summer when the day heats, afternoon or late morning. So fall (mild temperatures) is usually a good time for low water. Spring would be the same but the complicating factor is flood levels. Once Beaver is over the conservation pool 1120' above sea level there is a requirement by the Corp to get it down. So when you have a LOT of rain on a high lake level it will be run. (Of course there has to be capacity in the lakes below, table rock and bull shoals, to carry the extra water). This is why you get more generation during spring rains _ its not the rains per say that make them run its the lake height before it rains and how much new water comes in. Beaver Tailwater is high at the moment because of the height of Table Rock Lake which is up aroudn the top of the power pool. Hope this helps Steve -
Good for you Terry. Actually sounds if they aren't too specific on pattern had more yesterday coming in buying dries after success on the Norfolk. BWOs in 14 were the ticket for her, others swearing by ants. Cheers and have fun mate. Steve
