  1. Thanks for the report. I'm going to be there tomorrow - any advice on what to use? Are they coming up for drys/midges?
  2. I was there a week ago and saw the same kind of stuff and more. A group of three were fishing the trophy are just outside the park (below the campground) using dough bait. After they cleaned a couple trout I showed them the sign with the regs. They acted suprised, but I suspect they knew exactly what they were doing. We walked back up to the parking lot for a break and someone I was with mentioned this to a park employee. He said something about getting his book to write them up, got in his truck, then drove up the hill on the opposite site of the stream. Guess they don't care if we follow the regs.
  3. Floss or chenille mini jigs tied on 1/80 or smaller lead heads. White is my favorite for Montauk. Fish them under a small styrophome bobber, I mean strick indicator.
  4. Black and white jointed floating Rapala is my go-to lure.
  5. Usually I don't see the mobs on the Meramec like you will see on other rivers. Last Saturday I put in at hwy 8 and kayaked to just above cardiac hill. There were less than a dozen canoes, and after 3:00 I didn't see anyone. On Sunday from Cardiac to Scott's ford there was only one canoe. I'm not fishing this weekend, but a couple friends are, so I'll let you know how they do.
  6. listen to Ollie - there are warnings posted about using anchors below BSD. Water comes up, anchor doesn't, boat goes down, fisherman drowns.
  7. Centerpunch, That must have been you who we were talking to in front of Sturm's cabin late Saturday. I'm the guy with the yellow kayak that was camped on the gravel bar. Fishing was slow for us, we caught a few, and then Sunday morning I caught a few more using my "cicada" imitation. It is dark brown deer hair spun on a #10 with ginger hackle palmered over it. A bonus was the smallmouth that would hit it.
  8. Tricos in the early morning, I assume?
  9. To answer Danoinark - yes they are protected in Missouri. The Missouri wildlife code is called a "permissive" code, meaning if it doesn't explicitly state you can kill something, then you can't. I don't know how far down the food chain you can take that logic (there is no open season on skeeters, but you won't get ticket for swatting one). That said, I would kill a poisonous if it in my yard, in the wild, I'd give it a wide berth and leave it alone.
  10. Did you go? How was the fishing?
  11. I don't remember seeing the Brennan road sign when I was there a couple weeks ago - it may be gone. KK takes a sharp left where Brennen road cuts in from the right. Cardiac is a nice place to fish; the long walk from the parking lot to the river keeps the crowds away, and this time of year there isn't too much aluminum to contend with. You can also get to the Meramec trophy area by walking through Meramec Springs park.
  12. Finally got to Cardiac yesterday. The river is still up a little, but fairly clear. We caught a few, nothing big, on cracklebacks, prince nymphs, scuds. Didn't see any kind of hatch.
  13. Vic - thanks for the info - sounds like good advise - if I had half a brain I would listen to you. May make the drive anyway and end up in Maramec Springs.
  14. Gavin - thanks for the tip - I'll remember the 500 cfs
  15. sio3 - good point. This morning it's about 2.5, a little higher than I like it, but may be fishable.
  16. Might be fishing cardiac hill this weekend. Anyone have a recent report? Any hatches? Any fish?
  17. 15" legal? It depends on where you are. Here are the regs: http://mdc.mo.gov/fish/sport/trout/permits_regs.htm
  18. Pick up a copy of Chuck and Sharon Tryon's book, "Fly Fishing for Trout in Missouri". It contains a wealth of information on where to go, not only the well known streams, but others off the beaton path.
  19. Decibel meters are under $50 at Radio Shack. Not a huge investment, and I'm sick of hearing Free Bird. Enforcement is done regularly on the Huzzah just above its confluence with the Meramec. They sit in the woods and nab pot smokers and underage drinkers as they float by. It doesn't seem to have much effect on the rowdiness later in the day. I'm guessing they will set up similar checkpoints on the Current and JF. But a six pack limit? I spill that much anytime I float. If they want to improve the Riverways and the "outdoor experience", why not just cut in half the number of canoes allowed each day? Go to a reservation system like they do in some of the national parks, where you have to get your slot months in advance. This would eliminate most of the buzzheads, since they wouldn't plan that far in advance. The outfitters wouldn't like this, because they couldn't fill the rivers up bank to bank with aluminum, but too bad.
  20. Last night I forwarded your post to the World Bird Sanctuary in Stl.
  21. I forwarded your post to the World Bird Sanctuary in St. Louis. Maybe they know someone to contact in the Emminence area.
  22. Get Chuck and Sharon Tryon's book "Fly Fishing for Trout in Missouri". It contains an extensive list of creeks and rivers that hold trout. Some of the descriptions a a little vague, you will have to do some scouting to find where they are.
  23. I have a pair of size 6, rubber chester waders. Worn once, about 6 years ago, and have been sitting in box in the basement. I'm in the St Louis area. Yours if you want them. panddcampbell@peoplepc.com
  24. Hi Maniac, I floated from Hwy 17 to Bay Creek Saturday and Sunday. The river is low, getting lower, and according to the Ranger at Bay Creek, will probably be closed by the first week of June. We dragged a little, but not too much (in kayaks). I've never seen tubers on this stretch of the JF, but there were plenty of canoes Saturday, especially the stretch between 17 and Rhymers. From Rhymers to Bay Creek we saw less then a dozen canoes on Sunday. The fishing was good for mostly small smallmouth. We caught a couple about 14", but most were under 12". Any kind of small (4" - 6") plastic worm worked - motor oil was best, then white, grape, black. Yum crawdads killed them. Caught a lot of goggle eye with a dp teeny Rebel craw. Have fun.
  25. I'll look for you guys. I will be with a group of 4 kayaks - 3 of them are yellow Wilderness Systems.
