DT Do you use fluorocarbon tippet? if not try it. When fishing subsurface it is better, sinks better and is harder for the fish to see.
Instead of #18 flies, try #20 & #22 scuds and midges/nymphs, try one of those as a dropper just below a dry fly. You get twice the chance, either the dry or the dry is your stike indicator for the midge.
As far as fish chasing each other, that is male pre-spawn behaivior, I have seen 'em going in circles already. The fall spawn is starting at the parks.
If ya wanna have a bunch of fun, wait till 2nd week of Oct, go to Bennett zone 1 with a small egg fly, thats all you will need for bunches of chinass trout!
