Had a great time NOT being at work and being on the stream. I fished Thursday about 9:30 until whistle. Caught 10 or so up and down the island on assorted color Midges in sz 18. Olive P and P, Rusty Midge all worked for one or 2 fish. All in all the fishing was slow. Three weeks ago a Light Olive Midge was really good for me...go figure! Caught a few more up by the Holland dam in the afternoon and several in the late evening just below the spring.
By the spring I was swinging a Yellow Soft Hackle in sz 14 a they were snapping at the thing on every drift. They were hitting short, I guess, because I finally landed 3 but I had probably 25 takes. Frustrating but fun. I met britsnbirds and his buddies up by the spring and we shot the breeze for awhile.... great seeing you Pat... I enjoyed the company.
Friday I started at the horn up by the island and it was slow for me. Caught a couple on Midges, 2 on a small peach glowball, and quit for lunch at 11:00.
I checked out of Sand Springs Motel at 11:30 and decided to drive behind the resturaunt and try fishing the Niangua. The water was good wading depth so I thought I would give it a try for my first time fishing the Niangua. I waded out to an island about 20 feet offshore and fished fast water in each side of the island. I put on a olive wooleybugger with some gold flash on and started drifting and stripping across stream. I finally tried snapping the rod tip slightly and letting it drift down and across stream. That did it and I caught 5 up and down the island in the next hour. I was happy because I really didn't expect to catch a thing. I finally went back to the park to fish a couple more hours before heading home. I actually did better on the river. I did lousy just up from the whistle bridge but a fellow I met named Ken caught a few on a Zebra midge I gave him. I guess I gave him the magic Midge in my box cause he did better than I did. Anyway, it was fun fishing as always. I have certainly done better but I caught my share.
My next trip will probably be sometime in November catch and Release.
