This city had had 3 major news stories in the last two year: The Michael Devlin kidnapping of Shawn Hornbeck & William Ben Ownby, the police office (William McEntee) was killed in July 2005, and now this mass killing. It is hard to comprehend that any one of these tragedies has all taken place in such a tight nit community. My prayers are with all the families involved. Kim Ahne aka: FFM

Patfish, Those 89 Chevy had some good motors in them. I had an 89 Beretta GT, and I sold it for $1000 back in 2001 and it had 295,000+ miles. I'm still kicking myself today for selling it. It only had two major repairs. New plugs & wires at 150,000 and a new clutch at 175,000. I would change the oil every 5000 miles, plus I was getting 28 mpg as well. It was a sad day when I handed over those keys Later, FFM

Breathable waders are the only type I wear. I ditched my last pair of neoprene I think 8 years ago. I have two pairs of breathables: Orvis Highback silver and the Cabela pants. I wear the high backs only a few times during the winter because it seals the warmth in better. Other wise I stick to my pant waders 95% of the time. For warmth, I do excatly like Dano explained, "Usually some fleece pant's in cold weather. If its EXTREMELY cold, use polypropylene under the Fleece". So I only have on three total layers, plus they are all comfortable to wear and no loss of mobility. Plus breathables are easier to put on, store, clean and repair then the bulky neoprene. I just might have to look that one up. Thanks Gavin. -
Mardi Gras In St. Louis's Soualrd Area
flyfishmaster replied to flyfishmaster's topic in General Chat
Gavin, I'm assuming you are talking about the Venice Cafe? I have been there a few times; it is a very unique place for sure. Every time I’m there I want to say the words “far out man”. -
Phil, I have to say create a Poll and Vote on it. But I agree, you need to be a member to post and reply to the forum. I was a browser for a month before joining and I joined just to let my thoughts be heard. I also liked your statement about "accountability". FFM

I'm wondering if any of OAFs are going to the big Mardi Gras parade and party in Soulard on Saturday? For anybody not familiar with this event in St. Louis, it is considered to be the second largest Mardi Gras party in the country. It usually draws around 300,000 people. http://www.mardigrasinc.com/ I will be there later in the afternoon. This weekend is going to hurt...Mardi Gras & Blues game Saturday, Super Bowl on Sunday. The beer companies will profit from me for sure. Be safe out there... FFM

I just came across the website called http://www.olivethewoollybugger.com. It is set of books for kids with the main character ofcourse being Olive (a woolly bugger fly). I thought this would be a cool gift idea for those little ones in our life. Have a great weekend. FFM aka Kim

Wow, that is an improvement. I never really liked the old Feather-Craft site it was too wordy. They always put such a personal spin on each item’s description and I hope they stop doing that. I just want to see the manufacture description and price. FFM

flyphsh, For the Current, you might want to ask Sam Potter (a local guide) about throwing streamer patterns. His web site is http://tightline.biz/. Sam, at times, contributes to this forum as well. Like you I love fishing the Current, but I only use nymphs with great success and have landed multiple browns over 5 pounds between Tan Vat and Baptist Camp. I have to this day never used a streamer pattern on that river. So I'm gaining knowledge as well. Good post. FFM aka: Kim

Time For An Ozark Originals Swap?
flyfishmaster replied to JobyKSU's topic in Fly Swaps & other Activities
JobyKSU, I have never been in a fly swap before so I guess I will throw my hat into this one. I make a variation of scud pattern with a crystal bead in size 20. I know I can always catch a few fish with in shallow riffle water. Thanks, FFM aka: Kim A. -
cardiac, The forum is now past 6,000,000. I think you missed you predication date . FFM

Recommendations On Reel For Salmon Fishing
flyfishmaster replied to flyfshn's topic in General Angling Discussion
flyfshn, I would have to suggest looking at the Redington reels as well. Every time I use them up in New York for the big salmon, browns and stealies they work like a charm. Plus they have a little less damage to your wallet. Later, FFM aka: Kim -
Catch And Release Season Is Coming Up Fast
flyfishmaster replied to Center Punch's topic in Maramec State Park/Springs
I'm not able to make the 19th, I'm going to be hunting and performing a few honey-do's. But I will be down there on Monday Jan 21st. Does anybody from the St. Louis area want to hitch a ride down? If so send me a PM. I can take 2-3. Later, FFM aka: Kim -
TFM, So do you have a NEW go-to fly. Isn't it great landing a nice fish when you are least expecting it!

RC, You can use a fly rod and reel, but since the regulation states that only artifical and natural bait is allowed no files from Zone 1 or 2 are allowed. But what I do in order to fly fish the zone is use items like plastic worms or Synthetic eggs (made from glue gun). I have no yarn or feathers at all. These items are legal. I had a grumpy old man yell at me, telling me I was not allowed to fish in Zone 3 w/ flies. I told him to go find a conservation officer and he did. The Officer check out the fly box I brought along with me and started laughing, telling me those are some ugly plastic flies. He told me that I can continue fishing. So I do fish Zone 3 just for a change of pace. FFM aka: Kim

Leader To Tippet Knot?
flyfishmaster replied to flyfshn's topic in Tips & Tricks, Boat Help and Product Review
brittsnbirds, I got it out of the manual that comes with it, but like normal after I looked at it many years ago, I'm sure I threw it away. I went online to find a video but could not find one that was free. I will see what I can do for an illustration. -
PC, You are so right about Zone 3 at BSSP. I think below Suzy Hole all the way down to the next big hole (for got the name, next to the parking lot) is some of the best fly fishing water on the stream. I HATE fishing slow deep holes. If the number of fish landed is your concern stay in Zones 1 & 2. But if you want to Fish go to Zone 3. I have landed 30+ lunker at BBSP (over the last 8 years) and 21 of them have come out of Zone 3. Heck a freind of mine a few years back during the summer, landed (and kept) a 12 lb 12oz bow in the fast water 50 yards past Suzy Hole. Later, FFM aka: Kim

Leader To Tippet Knot?
flyfishmaster replied to flyfshn's topic in Tips & Tricks, Boat Help and Product Review
flyfshn, Most of the knot tools give you the same results, but here is the product I have been using for over 10 years the Cinch Tie (see site below). I think Bass Pro and Cabelas carries them for around $10. I own 3 of them: One in the trout vest, one in the bluegill vest and one in the car. http://cinchtie.com/Cinch_tie_knot_tyer.htm I can normally tie a leader to tippet in about 30 seconds or less. As a backup the hemostats work to, but this product is easier to handle and use. Dano... I too have used the loop to loop connection for larger flies. I would think for smaller flies and nymphing the extra size of the loops would cause a drifting issue with the current pushing the loops faster then the fly, creating an un-natural drift. What are your thoughts? FFM aka: Kim -
Leader To Tippet Knot?
flyfishmaster replied to flyfshn's topic in Tips & Tricks, Boat Help and Product Review
Flyfshn, I use a knot tying tool that I make a very quick surgeon knots. Only the line fail, never the knot. Kim A -
Kayser, Everybody that has posted information for your topic has been right on the money with great insight and knowledge. I too wanted to become a guide in Colorado back around 2000, I was offered a guiding job at a very well know shop and was going to be trained by a person that won a Orvis Guide of the Year Award. But there were two things that turned me away from doing it: 1) Turning my hobby into my job. What will my new hobby be to get away from the guiding job? 2) Money. I know the guides that read this have MUCH more knowledge regarding the Money issue, but how it was explained to me back in 2000. For an average day wading trip for 2 people the client rate would be $250 (w/o tip). One thing to remember is that the $250 is paid to the Guide service or Fly Shop you work out of, not you. A first year guide would get $125 of the money, a second year guide would get $175 and 3+ year guide would get $200. I know it is now 2008, and the guiding rates have gone up but so has the cost of everything else. Plus you have to remember that guiding in most areas is seasonal and is not always a 5 days a week, 52 weeks a year job. Most guides have to have a second job just to make it in life. Can any of Professional Guide add to this? With all that said, I do have to say I still regret not becoming that guide back in 2000. Because I hate being a computer jockey. Which ever direction you take, it will be the correct one. Rob.... If you want, I will be your test client for a trip!! I'm serious. Later, Kim Ahne

Most Comfortable Wading Boots
flyfishmaster replied to flyfshn's topic in Tips & Tricks, Boat Help and Product Review
Mike, This is going to be four in a row for Chota. I have had 5 different manufactures pairs of boots in the past but nothing compares to the Chota. Oh, and the Quick lace is a dream.
