Never fished it, but if MDC lists it as public, it would certainly give you a valid reason to be there. Just make sure you stay within the listed boundaries.

I was afraid of that. I really don't want to lose that last little bit because it'll take too much work to make the top section look right with the tip moved back that much. Oh well, it'll still work okay I guess.

I broke the tip on the 7-weight I built about an inch and a half down. What would the best option be as far as repairing it? I was thinking something along the lines of gluing it then doing a thin coat of hard as nails then wrapping and finishing it... kind of like a splice I guess. Will that work or is there a better way?

Well, I went down to Cuba to see the family last weekend and decided to hit the Current before the waves of drunken floaters. I got to Tan Vat and started fishing at about 4. That first hour before dawn was absolutely ridiculous. I hooked 8 fish, and only managed to land 1, an 18" rainbow that had plenty of fight to it. I stuck something big about 15 minutes after I showed up and from the way it was jumping, I think it was a rainbow but I'll never know because it threw the hook at my feet as I was turning on the headlamp. I fought the fish for about 5 minutes, so I think I was just horsing it and pulled the hook. Maybe 20 minutes after daybreak, several people showed up so I headed down to Baptist and ended up fishing with a couple guys down there, turning a few fish but not getting any hits. One of the guys turned a monster brown on a rainbow swimmy-jimmy. I decided to bag it a little after 9 and as I was walking up, I started seeing a lot of canoes coming down. Then I broke my rod when I got to my mom's place so I couldn't go back Saturday night.

It looked like it was raining, i bet the thumping was raindrops hitting the mic. Keep the videos coming buddy... every time I see one I have to resist the urge to take off from work and rip some lip.

Its a shame, but things like that happen. Sometimes I wonder if its not mostly due to a lack of respect for the responsibility that comes with certain activities- driving, boating, guns, the list goes on... it'll tear you up when its a kid that gets the worst of it too.

Sick dude... doesn't look like there's a whole lot to em but they have to move like none other. Are those some of the Galloup patterns you customized or are they all yours? What's that sculpin pattern in the background of the first pic? It looks pretty fishy too... can't see it real well but I'm thinking a wool head with rabbit strip collar and maybe body?

I would but I have to work... funny thing is I'll be in Cuba this weekend and probably will fish the Current Sunday at least. River should be in good shape if it doesn't rain. Take some pics and good luck.

Thanks for the response. I didn't make it down, helped a buddy move instead. I was planning to wade and fish streamers. It may be a while before I can make another trip that way.

I'm getting a little twitchy not being able to fish much but I have tomorrow (wed.) free and really want to try this river. I know it got blown out on friday and I'm wondering if it's worth the drive from KC or if I should go to the Current and wait for a better time.

I haven't looked at the gauge but I really wouldn't recommend fishing there until at least a few days from now. If they're closing the park due to flooding, it has to be pretty bad.

I definitey like the live reports. Next time I'm down we'll have to do some recording.

Nortrad, we need to fish together sometime. This summer may not present the best opportunity, but if you're interested, send me a pm and I'll see what I can do about weaseling a day off. Gavin, be great to fish with you too. Might be a good time meeting up and just getting silly with streamers... playing around with drifting and burning... if you're interested, pm me.

I think I will give it a shot. I've got some crawdad patterns I tied up that I think may be perfect for that.

How effective is drifting a streamer (I assume that is what you mean by the streamer/nymph combo)? I definitely understand the concept but I thought the main idea behind fishing streamers was to trigger the predatory instinct and elicit a reactionary strike. How often do you use that technique and under what conditions? What patterns work well- I assume its kind of limited to the more realistically imitative patterns that resemble dead or twitching baitfish, leeches, etc.... I couldn't see drifting a zoo cougar or clouser being overly effective. One more thing about the sink-tip line, the only time you'll ever need the effect on this river is if you're fishing a non-weighted streamer that won't sink on its own like muddlers or other deer hair patterns. In that case, a 15 foot tip works fine and remember to keep the leader short, no more than 3 to 4 feet; any longer and you'll defeat the purpose of having a sink-tip.
-
There really isn't much need for a full sinking line with streamers on that river. A sink tip line or sinking leader will work fine. You probably won't need more than a type 3 for most of the river but if its moving pretty fast you may want to go to a faster sinking tip or just bring a few sinking leaders ranging up to 7 ips. A floating line will be just fine if you want to fish a bit higher in the column too. Just cast and strip, varying your retrieve until you find one that gets you hit. It takes some creativity in some places, but that just adds to the fun... especially when it works. You may not catch as many fish depending on conditions, but its a total rush to see a take. Gavin definitely knows a lot more about the river than I do, but I'd supplement his streamer selection by recommending bigger sizes and some Galloup patterns. I may be down in Cuba this weekend if turkey hunting looks like a bust. If I do make it down that way I'll let you know.

How many other people were there? Heavy canoe and angler traffic can play a role in how well you do. I won't fish a lot of those rivers on the weekends for that reason alone. Judging by your post, you know what you're doing so I'd say just go back and try it again. Don't be afraid to fish streamers either. Last time I was there I ended up fishing with a guy who was nymphing. The water was just a little high but off color so the fishing was pretty slow in that respect but they still were willing to hit a nice meaty streamer.

I don't know how fair that question is. The White right below the dam is pretty comparable to taney in the type of water and structure you'll find with the exception of the outlets. Once you start going downstream it transitions into a river with weedbeds, log jams, and other structure rather than a lake. Below the dam in the park, its pretty similar to Taney but there is a lot more area to fish and the angler density seems a bit lighter. There are plenty of places downstream to wade like roundhouse, rim, and wildcat shoals to name a few. I've found the fishing to be a bit better there too. I seem to catch more and larger fish when I go, plus the chance at catching a brook or cutt is nice too. I would suggest for your first trip to get ahold of Jeremy Hunt. I give him a call every time I go down and we always have a blast. Here are some pics from my last 2 trips: Sorry about the quality of the first three, had to use the camera on my phone because we forgot the memory stick for the camera.
-
Yeah, my bad... just assumed you were fly fishing.
-
So not fair... I have finals for the next two weeks. Sounds like a helluva day. Streamers or were you nymphing?

Never owned an expensive pair of sunglasses... I just buy the renegades at Wal-Mart for $10. I don't know if I could justify spending more than 100 on sunglasses. Is there really that much of a difference in how well they cut glare?

I've fished down from Baptist a few times with pretty good results. There's a stretch a few hundred yards down where the bottom gets real soft and the water is not so clear, but once you get past that, its just like the water farther up. There is no shortage of fish down there either. I didn't nymph last time I was there, just threw streamers but its all good water for nymphs and dries. There is also a section where the river is pretty skinny compared with whats upstream, but really deep and fast... I just avoid that but there are undercut banks and plenty of cover for some big boys to hold in. Baptist has changed a ton since last year, the boat ramp washed out and there used to be a brush pile where I saw a couple locals keep two really nice browns. The riffle that flows into the hole there has quite a few fish and the deep pool at the tail is a great place to strip a streamer. I never catch anything over 10" in the riffle just below baptist, but I've been told thats not the norm.
-
Its a long way to walk from any access past Baptist. I wouldn't recommend it unless you have no other choice and are dead set on a float. Also, it would probably be a good idea to lock the canoe to a tree so nobody steals it.
-
Yeah, I was surprised that he seemed okay. The fact that he hit a streamer and fought hard makes me think he's he'll surive. Hopefully he'll get big... a tough fish like that would be fun when he hits the 20+ range.

Have you ever fished taneycomo? I've heard there is some good fishing there.
