You better stay away from the 4 Jackson County lakes...I call it their "Don't Ask Don't Tell'' policy when you have to buy a sticker to put a kayak or canoe on one of their lakes....When you go in the office to get a sticker and you don't ask they aren't about to volunteer any info..not even to tell you to pick up a pamphlet about their regulations ( which is on steroids compared to the State of Mo.) When would the thought of restricted launch sites enter into the mind of a paddler on a public lake...stocked by the MDC.... The park rangers (ENFORCERS) are about the most un-compassionate bunch I have ever run into.....yea... what's a warning ticket..not.... Moved out of the clutches of Jackson County and Kansas City 10 yrs ago..to Lafayette County.... And to think I grew up in this area.... learned to water ski at Prairie Lea lake back in the early 60's.... I'm N..E..V..E..R....going back even to fish from the bang..or on someone else's boat..or to use one of their shelter houses...no telling what layes..lurking ..behind ..a tree..nitpicking on any thing you do wrong.. Big Brother at it's worst... Two $113. fines in less than 2 weeks I'm done....

About 6 weeks ago I had a couple of boats loaded up and headed to Jacomo and got a permit not knowing the cost and when she hit me with the price of $42..I about fell over...But ignorant of any other prices I paid her and went on... Well they had an event last weekend and I met other people on the lake and noticed a couple and made the comment of how much I paid and they said they only paid $24 for each...so I don't know what the heck is going on... I was fishing a couple weeks back and had the kayak in the water when a park ranger pulled up and wanted to see my sticker, I had it in my vest,....... and we got to talking about kayaks and he seemed interested in mine and I gave him some business cards to give to his buddy's who kayak ( no mention of the launching area) of which I was cluless..... Well yesterday I went to the lower lake ,which has power boats, with the SOF to see what it would be like....It was windy so I picked a place where the wind would blow me back to shore to aid in trying to ride some of the boat wakes....Well after about an hr. a ranger shows up waving me back to shore....needless to say I got a $113. ticket....They allow bank fishing their only.....

Do I need to be a lawyer to make sense of this or am I crazy.....This is pertaining to 4 lakes... Boat permit (all County lakes) = $24 County residents Boat permit (Lake Jacomo) = $42 Non-residents Boat Permit (Longview/Blue Springs only) = $24 And to top it off their is designated areas to walk down to the waters edge and launch a kayak..subject to a $113. fine if not in a designated area...Pretty kayak friendly county..Ha..

woodman replied to Jack Jones's topic in General Chat
I am surprised he doesn't have more pics. of his builds.....I emailed him a couple yrs. ago before I started building these boats with my apprehension of wood boats on the rocky streams....Now with 10 boats under my belt....that fear is LONG GONE.. I hope he does well down that way ...support local boat builders... -
"It is all about me" is reflected it the way people drive on the roads also... The way they drive is a reflection of their personaliy....Common courtsey..what's that...common sense? I used to own Jet Skis and the Lake of the Ozarks will teach you common sense or die....

To The Skeptical: How Tough Wood Boats Are
woodman replied to woodman's topic in Lodging, Camping, Kayaking and Caoneing
A guy from Michigan......Waters here in the Great Lakes area have lots of rocks. Rivers wear some of them smooth, and freezing busts a few up every year, to present new and sharper edges. While I don't intentionally seek out rocks to hit, I tend to not avoid them either. Bottoms of my boats look exactly like the ones pictured. I've gone over beaver dams with the boat bridged. The cracking I heard came from sticks in the dam, not the wood in my boat. Waves, banging the boat up against the face of Mio Dam on the Au Sable River, banged up one side of my canoe a few years ago. Nothing structural, though. -

Thanks guys...Did I mention their is less than $200..in material in this boat... When I was headed to shore I smacked head on into a rock hidden in the weeds next to the bank....I looked at the bow and their is no sign except the paint is not as glossy...I think I need to add a keel rub strip to the bow ..... -
I finaly got the boat on the watter Monday..forgot the camera..man the day was beautiful and the lake was clear... Oh man I'm hooked now...this 28 lb boat is ausome...tracks really good and is super stable...even fished out of it....it was a breeze to carry with one hand up and down the steep bank to put it on the lake....I've built 4 cedar strip boats, 4 stitch and glue boats...These SOF are the most fun to build and paddle...I'm hooked... Well back on the lake Jacomo this morning.....As they say "it got slimed" well went back to that clear lake this morning and the bass were on it...this is the one 19'' long.... I need to mark off a scale on this boat I guess.... And then later I hooked into a carp that took me for a ride for about 20 min. I tighnend up the drag on the 4lb test to try to get a hand on him, with my hand tired and all and he broke the line.... Pics. of the build here... http://s147.photobuc...e 16 SOF Kayak/
