Thoughts On Montana? Where To Go? Where To Stay?
Micheal Kyle replied to OKFlyFisher44's topic in General Angling Discussion
I have a very good friend of mine that guides for Hubbard's of Yellowstone. It is just just out side of Livingston it is a first class opperation and the the fishing that time of year is awesome. By the end of season the rivers wont be as crowded and the fishing is hot. A lot of two and three fly set ups. They hopper copper dropper is one great set up. If you are going to go out early fall like in the end of Sept. through Oct. I would look at the Upper Missouri below Holter Dam you can call the Missouri River trout shop out of Craig a very first class operation as well. When you call or look up there number you need to look up Wolf Creek. The fishing is awesome and the streamer fishing for big trout is awesome. During the day late afternoon you will get into some tremendous dry fly fishing and the fish can be in pods that will hold 200-300 fish per pod. You will have the opp to catch all the 20-22 inch rainbows that you want to. Plus the browns are very aggressive as well there are nice browns that are caught out there during the fall on streamers. I hope this will help you if you have any other questions just ask and I will do my best to help you out. Michael -
This Saturday, Feb 2nd, we will once again be having our fly tying class. It seems that the pheasant tail nymph has caught some attention over the last week and has been catching some fish in local waters such as Lake Taneycomo, Roaring River, and Crane Creek. We at Back Country Outfitters would like to share with you how to tie this productive pattern and even discuss how and where it has been fished lately. Hope to see you at the shop. Class starts at 9:00 a.m. Michael

Back in college I always used to remember the color spectrum with this ROY-G-BIV Those are the colors that are on the spectrum Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo,Violet. You can then add Ultra Violet. As Thom says the red has the longest wave length. and thus keeping the color longer in deeper water. One thing to consider also is that most fish can see shades of polarization and I personally think that is more important than color. You can take any color of midge and certain depths they will appear gray so why use different colors. Because different colors will have a different shade of polarization. A lot of fish can see shades of polarization better than shades of color. I would also have to add this does not really matter for the upper end on Taney but it might work for lower Taney, that in deep water the fish do not key in on anything except for sound and smell. Thats why I posed the question be for really taking charge I wanted other people to get involved. There are 2 great books that are available they are titled What fish See, and How Fish Work. They explain the whole color issue in depth, and for the content of them I have paid way more than waht the books coost for a guy for 16 weeks to explain what these books explain.

I got a 65% Not bad I guess Let my employ beat me, is that good Michael

yes you are right fish can not see the red light. this past fall several nights looked like a christmas tree.
-
He is talking about leaving the red light on while you fish. I would like to know the answer to this as well. But yes you are right about preserving your night Vision. I used to use a blue and a red light for night time but my Vision went south and now I still cant see at all when it is on. Thats why I went to the light that I now have the Princeton Tec apex it is bright. I am sure you guys have seen me down there when I have it on. If they are trying to sight fish at night wouldn't that be A little on the un ethical side. I would think that would think that would be like spot lighting deer. Plus on the indicator I can see where they would need to see them. But everybody that I know uses a glow stick with them. Any body else have any thoughts about this. Michael

I have been dubbing the body on the slump buster with mohair leech dubbing and the new prism dubbing from Wapsi. The reason I have been doing this because it makes a larger body thus moving more water. I think that sometimes fish do not really key in on a certain fly or color they key in on movement and when you you can push more water you make a bigger movement thus creating more strikes. If any body wants to see this tied we will tie this pat Tuesday Night at the class. Michael

It is hard to find a jacket that will do both and stay with in a certain price range. I would look at the freestone but remember it is not gore-tex so in the warmer weather you might get a little damp underneath because of the breathable factor. You might take a look at the Simms Pac-Lite and or the Classic Guide very reasonable when it comes to price. I really talk about layers and you need to do so with a base, mid and upper layer start with a polypropylene then go to a light fleece from Simms or any other company you like, then on the really cold days going to a heavy fleece for the top layer. You also should consider a win stopper fleece for the top layer. You can actually feel the wind stop makes a huge difference now with all that said with the Classic Guide coat from Simms you can where it all year long as rain coat. When it is warm and or cold as long as you have the proper layers underneath for winter. One very interesting fact from Gore-tex it will not work right when the temperature outside is warmer than your body temperature, it Will suck the moisture right back on top of you. So with that said Gore-TeX is perfect from about 90 degrees-way below zero. Good luck with this I hope you find the perfect jacket. Michael
