Sitting around the shop not knowing what to do for sure since the wife and kids are in Kansas city. Are they really going to shut it down well I guess my self and Duane are going to find out exactly what time they will run the water to. With a minor detour down to the Landing and and a four hour stoppage in play we found ourselves at 9 calling to see if the water was off and it was. The band was getting ready to play so we decided to sit and listen to the band while the water dropped out. I could not believe it, Phil was right he must have a high power than my charts and graph. But then wait what was that I just heard was that the horn yes, about 10:30 or so they turned one unit on and ran it until midnight. Well I barely made it out alive with my charts and graph thing.(LOL) We finally rolled into the parking lot and got ready to get it on. As the water drops I love to fish the point so that is where Dan, Duane, and myself headed not one sticking nibble, and I stayed for a while but absolutely nothing, and yes I did try the Kitchen Sink fly. I told Dan and Duane I knew where we could go so we made the move up by the cable on the south side. Yes, no skunk smell for any of us we fished up there from about 1-3:30 I am not for sure how many fish we caught but there were several cast that were made in a row with a fish being brought in to be released form the clutches of the (I finally got my fix fly fisherman), yes no more shakes.(LOL) Fishing was so so nothing to brag about every fish that I caught last night was around the 14-15" mark but it was fun. The best three flies were a Blood Red Mohair leech, a Jungle Juice Mohair Leech and a white sculpin. I hope they shut the water off tonight because we will be waiting for another fix. Michael

Might be right but according to my charts and graph if you know what I mean It says midnight or around midnight. The charts and graph have never let me down be for. I will assure you though I will be waiting.
-
After further evaluation, I have determined that the water will shut off around midnight. The graphs and charts are now leaning toward water running at Bull Shoals.
-
I would not belive the scheldule right now. I'm thinking around midnight they will shut it down to 1 then try and taper it down from there. Might run one all night. A huge might. Just from the charts that I have seen.

I have fished Taney for more than 25 years, now with that said I am only 32 I would have to say that only the last 15-17 years count. There were some years that there were a lot of fish up but not like it has been in the past two years. I would have to agree with SIO3 that is the reason for that many fish up and beyond the re-bar. Fish run in herds when they see fish go and see it is safe they will be just like little sheep they follow. MDC is going to have to do something or there Little project will be a failure in my eyes. Now I do understand that is what they used to have them do but it was not so publicized what it was there for. They would actually have to go down there and manually catch the fish, then take them up collect and return. Now everybody and brother knows what the outlet is for big fish to go and spawn in the barn and then be returned to the water. Being a former employ of MDC for a couple of years in the Fishery dept. as an assistant I do know how the uppers echelon think. It can be very comical at times, I think that if some of us would ban together we might be able to get something done about the outlet fishing especially outlet three or the new ladder, especially in the fall. Remember I'm only trying to help protect our beautiful resource and I will be willing to help out with any thing you all decided would be pertinent to do. Michael

MDC will have to do something if they expect the fish to move up the ladder. I would hope that they could see a problem, I for one can see a high mortality rate right there and I would think that this would defeat what they want to do with the ladder. I really think that the MDC might want to take a look at at few other states and see what they do for there regulations during the spawn. Now with that said the MDC will argue that the fish do not actively spawn in Taneycomo well I would have to agree to a certain point as science boy looking at the management area. Now as a fisherman I would have to disagree because there has been several times that I have caught and or seen tiny fish and when I say tiny fish these are fish under seven inches. They have to come from somewhere they will say they escape from the hatchery I say yes maybe a few do but when you start seeing fish that have there paw marks and do not have the race way beat up look. Where did they come from. Now with all of that said, I guess where I'm going with all of this is, the MDC only looks at the Taneycomo fishery a strictly put and take. Meaning with out the stocking of the fish there would not be any fish in there. I do believe this to a certain extent but I also think that if they would reevaluate their rules and regulations that this fishery would be one of the best tail waters in the nation. Michael

I would say with the water they have run this year that the browns will move up a little earlier than normal. I have had my best days fishing for the pre-spawner's in the 1st and 2nd week of October. For us waders the best place to fish is down by Point Royal. When the fish come up they are a little picky but after they start their thing they have one thing on their mind and it sure is not eating. After a couple of weeks of this they will start to get hungry and then all hell will break out with the big fish being caught every where. With the amount of water they have been running this year I would say that the best time to fish will be the last 3rd and the 4th week of October. The last couple of years it has been late as in to the month of November, I have to account this to the amount of water they did not run do to the drought conditions that we were in. Michael The fish come last to the corp. What they will do is monitor the DO level and when it gets below 4ppm they will shoot O2 the into the water when it come through optimum range is 6-10ppm. I have heard through the grape vine that it cost $10,000/shot. Yes the fish ladder will create a little more flow, some of the places that are dry when the water is off will become wet. The lake level at the dam will still be 701.3 when they get everything back up and running. Will not make a huge difference though it will be nice once they get them all back up and running. Michael

I have a few that I'm working on.

No problem And by the way how much is it worth to Leonard for me to keep my mouth shut on what the PMS is.(LOL)

Since I have been going to the doctor everyday I have not been able to fish at night for the last few weeks. I hope that everyone will keep me in there prayers and I hope when I get done with what I'm going threw right now I will be able to do what I love which is to fish and hunt. I know Leonard good enough to know that Leonard knows that I am giving him a hard time. If you have read most of my poston the forum and I mean most of the post you will find that they are full of very informative information. Michael

When we are talking about articulated flies they are flies that are tied on one hook with a trailing hook out the back. Now when you tie these flies what you will do is tie the two hooks together using a heavy 20lb steel leader. Then tie the material all the way back to the second hook. Very easy for long leech's out of rabbit. I always cut my first hook off. Now there are some flies that have no material tied on the second like the Trailer Trash and Skaget Minnow. Gamakatsu make what they call an Octopus Hook these work great for that. Give me some time and I will finish looking up these flies for you and give you the web address so you can see them. One way to view a lot of these flies is go to theflyshop.com and click on flies then click on spey flies and most of these articulated patterns are on there site. There is a forum dedicated to all fly ting and it the flyting forum. and then there is the Ohio flyfishers website. If you have any questions give a call at the shop. Michael

Zac, Here is an article that I posted a couple of months ago I hope that you will find it usefull. You do not have to purchase your flies most of what I know about you is what I have read with a little help you can tie everything that you will need down there. 6-12lb line no tappered leader becuase you are trying to make the fly roll over. Also if they are running water, and you are not familar with the spots then do not waid at night. I for the most part will fish a floating line untill I get down to the deeper water that is when I will cast an intermidate tip. A type three 10ft will work just as long as you are in the deeper water. If they have the water on then a type three will work just about every where. Koa is just past the boat ramp great spot I hope you enjoy the article if you have any further qustions give me a call at the shop. Night fishing Taneycomo I have been night fishing down at Taneycomo for well over 15 years maybe longer. And have seen people come and go, and people who go always will find there way back to the night time is the right time. One thing that I have noticed over the years is that the fishing is always about the same it is ether on or off. On the night that it is on you will catch 40-60 fish depending on how long your down there. On the nights that it is off you will catch maybe half that amount and have to work at getting them. My dad and I have night fished back in the day when night fishing Taney wasn't cool where we would catch 120 -150 fish between the two of us. With the night fishing growing in popularity it is though to have those night because some of the prime spots are taken. That is why I have done the home work and know spots and fish spots that no one will even consider to fish at night. Now I'm not trying to be big headed but the night fishing takes a little time and a little work to master. I usually will avg about 150 nights a year on Taney, with everything that happen this year I will not make the avg. There was one year that my dad and I were down there over 250 nights and what a year. I am pretty sure that I have cast everything including the kitchen sink at them to try and see if it would catch a fish. I used to try and keep mental notes and that got too hard for me to remember everything. So now I keep a journal and keep everything from the weather to moon phase wind direction, who was with me, to how many fish we caught and what we caught them on. I have been going over all of this and it seems that the conclusion that I have come up is just about everything that I have tryed has caught a least one fish on. OK maybe the kitchen sink didn't catch any fish but it was fun trying to cast that thing on my 3'2wt(LOL). We all have our favorite spots and will seldom move but in my own experience I will start at one end and work down to the spot that I want to end at and by doing this I have found some awesome spots between point A & B. I have had people watch us get ready in the parking lot and actually have people ask me where are going with all that gear. I try to always keep a sinking line like a type 2 or 3 on hand just because they are not running water does not mean you can use one. I have been known to cast a floating line in the shallows then put a sinking line in the deeper water , and when I say deeper water any water thats is over 4 ft in depth. And then there are all my boxes way too many flies to go over right now. When you see my fly box you might think that I'm crazy OK I'm sure that some of you already think that. Back to the main point I have top water flies all the way to the huge sculpins. Now the time of year will dictate what size flies that I will have on hand. For the general purpose of this summer time will yield the size to be 10-6 and the fall will yield the size of the fly to be 6-1/0. Two reasons for the dramatic size change, for the most part in the summer time there are a lot of fish in the area that are 15-18 inches there are a few over 18-24 about but they are few and far between. I will use the month of July as a feeler to see how I think the fall will be. In my years of fishing down there if you start catching a lot of Browns at night in July the fall we be good as in lat year I had 8 fish that were over 10lbs and one that pushed the 15lb mark. So to sum up summer time fishing and you want numbers fish small flies if you want to go after some bigger fish fish some bigger flies and you might need to move down stream. A lot of people do not know this but Taney is stocked the heaviest during the summer because of the all the added people down there. Now to the fall and the big stick time, I will have big flies and a big stick to be able to cast the flies. I will generally have in hand a 9'8wt. For two reasons the ease of casting bigger flies not to say you cant cast them on a 6wt. And for the ease of getting big fish in. When you catch these big fish as in 24-28 inch fish you want to get them as quickly as you can so that you do not harm them. Remember the reason that the big fish are coming up is to spawn. Now the MDC says that the fish do not spawn in Taney, that can be a whole other topic. However the MDC does come down a get the big fish and milk them so that they can continue to produce the fish in the hatchery. I will use a lot of articulated pattern's with stinger hooks in them. Two reasons for the articulated patterns is I can get a larger fly and not have to have a huge hook in the fly.; I will tie a bunch of articulated leech's that will have a number 4 octopus hook in it and the fly is 4" long the hook is only about 1" long. I only through streamers and only fish when the water is off. That is how I have done it for years I have had some people try and get me into nymphing at night no offense it's not me. I like the action of streamer fishing. I also believe that it is the most productive way to fish because you can cover more water at night whipping and stripping streamers. Starting to get busy must get to work now. See you all down ther tonight. I hope that this what not to long. Michael

Taneycomo Night/Fall rod discussion
Micheal Kyle replied to vanven's topic in General Flyfishing Topics
Sorry for not getting involved sooner, I have had some medical issues to deal with. If you are going to buy a rod for Taney at night I have to say cast them all and find the one that fits your casting style. I am sure some one already said that. Then decide what is most important to you casting or fishing I have found that a lot of rods are just casting mechanism and not fishing tools. Beginners will tend to gravitate to rods that are very fast action rods because of the ease of casting them. Most of the experienced caster will gravitate to wards medium action rods because they are easier to cast. I for one like the medium action rods you can slow your cast down to enable to throw more wide open loops with the rod which will enable to cast the bigger flies. Which I'm surprised that no one has brought that up it is very hard to slow a very fast action rod down so that you may accomplish this feat. believe me when you are out there with a big fly on you will appreciate the wide open loop. If you do not cast with a wide open loop you will be removing knots a lot. Second I'm not sure if I would go with a long rod rod remember the more rod you have in the air to catch the wind the worst off you are as well. Longs rods are nice to fish out of a boat and to nymph with. That is so that you have more line control But other than that all they cause is wind resistance. I would say cast the Sage Launch or the Scott A2 or the V2 now the A2 will be a little higher price but you might understand why after you cast it. I would pay more attention to the rod than the reel but please be sure to spend the extra money on the good fly line. I never worry about the reel for fresh water unless it is big game fresh water.(Stripers,Pike,Muskies). There are some big trout down there but the less expensive cast reels will do the job. To sum it up 9' 7wt A2,V2, or the Sage Launch Line is a Rio Clouser to Match the rod Reel is a Ross world wide or a Sage 1500 if you Aluminum Plus we have all this on Web Site as well free shipping on orders over $50 Happy Hunting Michael -
Flyfishers Guide to Missouri & Arkansas
Micheal Kyle replied to McManus's topic in General Flyfishing Topics
yes it has about 3-4 times the info it is awsome book -
Jim I would have to say that over the years of fishing for big Browns in November has been the most rewarding. A lot of people come down in October in chase of a monster. And sometimes it does happen but after reviewing my journals most of my biggest Browns have come the 2nd-3rd week in November. I would say that the moon does play a big part of the Browns run just as it does in just about any other fish species when it comes time to spawn. I have noticed that just after the new moon is when I have done the best. One other thing that will play a role in how the fish will migrate up to the dam is flow of water. If they run a lot of water in the early fall I have noticed that the big fish are a little earlier than usual and then the last 2 weeks in October seems to be the best time. One thing that I will do as well is go down during the day and scout out the big fish then come back down at night and hammer the area that I saw a big fish. And when I say hammer an area I might fish a 200yd stretch for a very long period of time. I kind of think as the Brown run as hunting you do your home work and you will be rewarded. Thats why I am strict on catch and release. So this YOUNG GUIDE will never have to worry about it. I for one have seen this happening young and old I think that people just think that there above the law and think that there just fish that gets stocked so what does it matter. TAXIDERMIST just don't single the young guys out I know that is easy to do and I know that everyone is entitled to there opinion but I think if you will pay attention you will see more than just the young guy breaking the law. I would lay money down that these people that you saw doing this where not even guides. Surly to goodness any one that is guide knows the laws and would not break them just for a little money. But who knows in this time and day. Michael
