night fishing report for 6-8-07
Micheal Kyle replied to Micheal Kyle's topic in Upper Lake Taneycomo
He told me that he was going to meet someone down there at 4am. I hope he made it through the big hole with water on. AH yes that was the familiar sound I thought it was just some THUNDER. May be we should put some request in for music on certain night's I'm sure I could make it happen. I think she is wanting to go and eat then she said something about the Titanic she said it is an hour tour. They assign you names when you begin then at the end they tell you if you survived. I hope I will make it through the tour I'm sure I will let them know myself if I survived or not.(LOL) -
night fishing report for 6-8-07
Micheal Kyle replied to Micheal Kyle's topic in Upper Lake Taneycomo
I will not be able to attend, it my wifes and I anniversary, she would kill me if I went fishing. However she did say we were going to Branson maybe that is what she has in mind(LOL). I'm sure that there will be quite few people down there tonight. -
Well the juke box on wheels and the gang showed up around 11. Started to fish and they blew the horn at around 12 not good. I had seven fish before they went and did that, Mohair leech Black size 8. We had some very good conversation in the parking lot we stood around and talked until 2 AM. I not sure where it was the deepest. I had my dad with me last night and believe me you think that I can talk you should get him started. It was great to talk with everyone Terry, Rick, Both of the Dwayne's and Leonard. I think what I should have done was make a mobile bar and start serving cocktails. We already had the juke box why not some fine spirits. Michael

I'm in just let me know. Sorry I kept him out to late. I told him several times this is the last fish and he would cast again. Then I would have to cast again. I'm pretty sure we went through the last cast segment for 45 minuets.

He's gotta catch me first The picture device that I use has never let me upload the pics to the forum. I always have to have Phil do it, I do not want to bother phil. I will try and upload a pic though. Just to prove that I have been down there.

Well Guess who is back into the groove? Yes your right that would be me and my gang. We have completed a lot of things here at the shop and on the home front. I now only have about a 30 minute drive vs. 1.5 hour drive to Taney. I love it. We have been fishing Taney a lot at night generally we are not starting until after midnight. The fishing has been great the fish that we are catching are running in 15-17" and are full of energy. We have been using a variety of flies any where from a sculpins to the good olé stand by mohair leech. When we have been fishing the sculpins I have been fishing them very slow and on bottom, if you are not in the Rocks you will not get hit. The olive and brown in a size 4-6 I have noticed that the fish have been midging a lot at night and I have really taken advantage of that with top water flies. They have been smacking they heck out of muddlers right on the surface, size 6 in brown. Last night I used the old stand by the mohair leech, I have a new color I call it the ACE OF SPADES. I not sure how many fish I caught on it but it was a bunch I'm pretty sure I will be adding this one to the collection of mohairs. Whip and strip Everything the Slow strip and has been pretty good but I would have to say with a moderate 3-2 strip, has worked the best. I always vary my stripping sometimes that will make all the difference. 3 nights ago all I was doing was letting it swing and then recast. The best fish of the week at night did come last night it was a 19-20" brown nice and fat as well. I will do my best to keep good and accurate reports going, now that I'm back in the playroom. The timeout was long but I'm sure in the long run it will pay for its self. Michael

Nathan One of my favorite floats is Kerr to Mcords Bend I have not yet got to float this year except when the white bass were up when I Small mouth Fish I use a lot of craw fish pats and bait fish pat. when it gets on up into the hot months of the summer I will use a lot of poppers. Jim the guy that works for me in the shop has a couple of pat one is a spider jig and the other is a gizzet looking fly. Both work great. the Names of those pat are the Jim's Ozark Spider and the Jim's Ozark Bush Whacker. Another way that I will fish for the smallies on the James is with Nymphs in the shoals. Put a strike indicator on and put nymph at a depth that will drag the bottom and bounce along the rocks. Big Princes and Squirrel nymphs work the best like a size 8 and 10. Wooly uggers size would range from a size 6-10. Michael

HUM! Where it was stored that would also lead me to have the same question, what would it matter if the material is supposed to last for ever. I would have to agree with you Rusty. I guess we should all rush out and buy the new, oh no I don't have it in stock. I'll wait to post what the new device will be.(LOL) Michael
-
Randy, I here congrats are do here a big Toast in your direction. I would never do that. You know my feeling if you spend nothing or if you spend 10,000 dollars here at the shop you will always get the same advise. I just hope that everyone feels that it is good advise.

Snow fly sorry I miss read the post I think that periodicals are a good source of information however one must consider the periodical and take a look at who they or what they promote . Then flip through the periodical and see who the major advertisers are most of the time they will be the same. I value everyones opinion on this forum that is what makes the forum go around. Rusty I appreciate the fact that you will give someone the time to call and discus the problems with you before you throw them under the bus. I was just personally wanting to know who it was so that I could look at some spools here at the shop to make sure it was not a bad batch that I had. For that fact I'm glad you called me and told me on the phone. This is one of the best threads that has been on here in a while, the reason I say this I fill that the tippet leader then fly line are the most important thing when fishing. You do not want those three things to come in between you and a fish of a lifetime. Michael

Did I miss who the manufacture was or I should say Company
-
You don't buy that there is only one manufacture of fluorocarbon. Well I like I said I could be wrong the other Factory may have reopened. Yes you are correct that the company that putt's their label on it is responsible. I have seen over a period of years when there has been a a batch problem and it actually goes to several company. One particular time is when Orvis and Seagar both sent out letters at the same time telling of the exact problem. Michael

Steve yes let go fishing sometime, unfortunately unlike you I own my own store and can only pretty much go at night. But would love to go I think that it would be a lot of fun. OK here is my point on fluorocarbon, You have all pointed out that the heat from the knot will break down the line when tying a knot you have created heat to my understanding it takes about 400 degrees to break fluorocarbon down. So wouldn't that be considered breaking down via the elements. I would have to suggest that day after day of keeping your fluorocarbon in the car at smoldering heat during the summer, I can not just turn my head and say that would not effect the spools. maybe it does not who knows for sure. I will have to agree that for the way you tie your knots would be very critical aswell. On to the water if you are fishing in water where you have a build up of salts which most water does because the water is not purified. That will make me think that any salts that build up on the line will make it more brittle. Unless fluorocarbon will not allow the build of salts on the line. Now I'm not just talking about NACL I'm talking about all the nitrates, phosphates that happen to be in all the water that we fish. Now obviously there has to be some point that the line on the spools will break down a little from that. I not talking about the spool that you just bought but the one that you seldom use that you tote around with you and it gathers the debris on the line. Then one day you'r out and need the line that is on the spool and thus this is what happens. I will say that fluorocarbon is very though and is stiffer and harder and carries a smaller diameter for the same line weight than does mono, I truly believe in the stuff and use it all the time. The way I fish with sink tips on the bottom trough all the rocks I still can feel the tippet or leader get rough. That is why I use fluorocarbon because I know that with mono it would have already broken. About the only time I use regular mono now is when I am using a fly that needs to be fished on the top of the water IE.(dry fies). That is why I brought up the fact that there was only one factory that I know of making fluorocarbon in Japan. If you also would like to know Like I said in the previous post there are only a few manufactures of fly line Rio, S/A, you might know this but Rio makes the Sage Line and S/A make the Orvis line. Thats why I bring up the point of the fluorocarbon there is only one factory so maybe we shouldn't get on the brand for a bad spool but get on the factory. Those are not all the manufactures. Just food for thought Michael I know that I'm getting pretty deep on this matter but I will always think that there has to be some correlation to fluorocarbon breakdown to everything I just said. It must be scientist coming out in me instead of the fisherman.

as of lately I have not been able to fish much with the store and all we have been very busy. Yes the impact of the flouro to the enviromnet is huge it has a a half life of 10 thosand years that is huge considering that the half life of carbon which everything in the world has some of is 14,000 years. However I still belive that it will breakdown a little how much who knows. Like I sadi maybe we should get to gether and have a test. It does not matter who was it There is air flo Frog Hair Rio Seagar I could goe on for days on how many diffrent companies that have their brand of flourocarbon. Like I said there were two factories in Japan I was told about a month ago that the one factory shut down so that leaves one. It's just like the flylines there are only a few companies out there that produce the fly lines. RIO, S/A there is a one more I will have to look it up and post latter. That is here in the USA

Why should I have waited to write my post. I have seen it happen time and time again, I'm not sure what article you are referring to but it can happen and does happen. And as one that uses only fluorocarbon that is my opinion. Maybe we should perform a test and see if it will happen leave a spool out to the elements it will break down how long will it take thats the question. It will not occur as fast as mono does but over a period of time lets say 2-3 years I assure you that it will break down and be weaker. I for one am a huge Rio fan I have put everything to the test and and truly believe that Rio is the best. One must consider too that when you tie a knot with mono and flour you do create heat and that can break it down as well just as snow fly said. So if the heat that is generated over a knot will break it down, why would the elements over a period of time not break the line down. There are also times that bad batches are produced and get out of the factory unfortunately that is bad for everyone that is involved. I will say this that there is only one plant in Japan that is making fluorocarbon, How many people knew that. Michael
-
Yes over time it will break down. Especially if you get it wet and dry, let it get hot and cold and let the sun light get access to it. There are a few companies that will post a expiration date on it, the date is usually about 2-3 years.

The hatch of the 17 year locust is coming!!
Micheal Kyle replied to jdmidwest's topic in Fly Tying Discussions & Entymology
Yes what a pattern I'm not sure how many fish I caught on that fly back then but it was a bunch. I can remember going down at night with my dad as you all might know him by Stubby and catching them on that fly all night. There were nights during the peak cicada hatch if thats what you want to call it, that we would have way over a hundred fish between the two of us. The full moon was the best time to fish this fly, you don't have to worry about being able to see the fly the fish will let you know when they eat it. And actually the cicada every year is a good pattern but when these particular cicadas come out they are out by the millions and I mean millions. There were nights that you could not hear your self think. Michael -
yes they are my number one selling rain coat and that is great price.
