Retro Learns to Flyfish
retroaction man replied to retroaction man's topic in Beaver Tailwater/Upper White River
i knew some would get a kick out of this. Thanks for the no lippin tip. can you tell me why this is bad for the fish? thanks. i was also hoping this thread would get some folks posting again seems as if this forum has slowed down quite a bit -
I have been fishing below beaver dam for about 3 years now. First time i went we were fishing with corn. After a while the whole corn thing just felt in a way like cheating or like fishing on a trout farm. So after awhile I moved onto fishing with spinners and spoon lures. Fishing down there this way made it seem more interesting and over time become fairly decent at catching fish and it was more enjoyable. After awhile of that I began fishing from my kayak this enabled me to get to certain areas i had never been and since then i have been fishing below spider creek in some of my favorite spots. This brings us to three weeks ago. Knowing someone who had flyfishing gear that was no longer being used, I asked if by chance he could hook me up with a decent fly rod and real. I was able to get my hands on a cabelas reel and a berkly graphite rod. Friend also gave me a leader and at the time what i thought was flyrod line. That evening i put both the line and leader and the rod and as soon as the weekend rolled around i was off with my fly rod and kayak (take in mind i had NEVER thrown the flyrod not even in the yard)to give this whole fly fishing deal a try. Fishing that sunday morning was a little different it was cold and getting colder and it was also starting to rain. But i continued to head to the were the two log cabins are by the river. If anyone saw me that morning chances are they were laughing pretty hard at my attempt at casting the line. I also knew at the time my cast and placement was pure WEAKSAUCE. However I did manage to catch a small rainbow on the sowbug i was useing (refer to pic links) Shortly after the catch and release enough was enough of getting rained on and being cold so i took it to the house for some football and brew. Well.... yesterday I was doing quite a bit of reading on the types of flys, waders, gear ect used for flyfishing. During this resarch I cam across a great article about the types of line, tippet, leaders, and backing used and how its labeled. Knowing the spool for the line on the rell was still in the garage I went to get it to see what type i currently had on my rod.... thats when i read the embarassing words "20 lb fly fine backing" never before had i ever embarassed my own self untill yesterday. all i can say is thank god i didnt get into a conversation with someone and show them my reel thought maybe some of you would get a kick out of this I will continue to houn my fly fishing skills but dammit next time i will be useing real fly line lol here are some pictures of my first attempt the fish http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o255/Tro_04/100_0761.jpg my setup (yes im about to purchase the flyrod holder) http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o255/Tro_04/100_0760.jpg my 4 pound anchor that works perfect but im thinking about dropping it from the front http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o255/Tro_04/100_0754.jpg the reason i posted this thread was to maybe get a laugh and to also get some/any tips opinions ect from yall. reading yesterday seems the wabbit hole go deep with flyfishing Im currently checking out waders (without the boots) another rod and reel setup and types of line thanks in advance for any info watch out yall imma quick learner BTW i am a catch and release fisher seems i get more enjoyment letting them go then eating them CHEERS im not spell checking this sorry Tro

Fishing From a Kayak
retroaction man replied to retroaction man's topic in Beaver Tailwater/Upper White River
Yes, thats a swifty 9.5. ive mounted a few things on her here and there. I purchased it because i thought it would be a good all around boat. In the spring i took it to the mulberry and right above birds campground i was getting it to surf and play in the rapids. Its also great to fish from. Like i said i plan on installing those rod holders ive already put the paddle holders on and im looking into an after market seat as well. -
Fishing From a Kayak
retroaction man replied to retroaction man's topic in Beaver Tailwater/Upper White River
Well i understand the danger aspect of useing and anchor while fishing in the boat. But i always have my knife and the anchor will be tied to rope so it can be cut. Im well aware that being in a kayak can be dangerous even on very slow or still water. However i have a perception swifty and my boat is VERY stable. As far as storage goes i have deck bungee cords systems on both the front and back of me and also have space behind my seat. pleanty of room for me. ecce did you see me? I didnt happen to spot you. my perception is blue as well and i was as far a maybe 1/2 a mile down from the dam. kinda checked it out then paddled back up the ramp by the darn. Ive seen your setup on here before and i love it. I havnt put rod holders on yet because i wanted to fish a few times so i could make the correct decision on were to mount them. i will have one or two surface mounted on the back and one base mounted on the front. Also i mostly fish for trout with a reg ultra light pole. the one i have right now is pretty short so im going to look into getting a longer one for more leverage. thanks for all the tips guys. if anyone want to get together this summer or fall for some kayaking fishing i would be down. Im only 30 mins from the tailwaters. I do think that i might stay out of the kayak during the cold months of winter. At least untill i get full drysuit gear lol. the coldest days of winter so far have been my favorite days fishing on the tailwaters here is my setup -
Decided to take the kayak to the tailwaters yesterday. To say the least it made a huge difference in the trip. Since this was my first time fishing from the yak on "somewhat" moving water i thought i would start a thread. First thing i noticed was that i need an anchor. Its difficult fishing and trying to stay in the same place. With some practice i did get the of it though. I fished down stream paddleing backward enough to hold me still. I also got behind a rock and that kept me in place. Also im going to need a net. From land you can get them out fairly easy but in a yak your so low the the water you have less leverage and no land to get the fish over. Fishing from a yak without barbs can be VERY interesting. IMO it alot more fun theres more of a challange. I caught three and landed ZERO. ANYONE with tips/ tricks or one that offer advice for kayak accessories please do.

Fishing On The Mulberry
retroaction man replied to retroaction man's topic in Wild Trout Creeks & Streams
this weekend i will be useing my Perception Swifty. Its a rec boat closed deck. New they run about 300 and well worth the money. I didnt get it just for fishing. So if your looking for strictly a fishing boat you may wont to go with a open deck boat and if your budget is higher than that you can really get a nice boat. Check out the wilderness boats. Fishing is a little different in one. I have mine rigged with rod holders and bungee deck kits and a paddle holder as well. In my opinion its a blast useing it to fish. You have to be carefull of course. -
I headed down to byrds for the weekend. Im talking my fishing yak since the water is low. Has anyone done any fishing there lately? if so can you give me any info on what to use were to fish ect. Thanks. I hope everyone get out at some point this weekend. Cheers
