No, Meaning that thier spawning seasons are adjusted by the number of hours of daylight in a day. As the seasons change, there is always an increase/decrease in daylight hours. Thier biological clock is timed by those daylight hours. That is the biggest factor in Lower Taney. On other waters the temperature tends to be the key factor. Since Taney has no seasonal temperature changes(not drastic anyway) the fish follow the suns patterns from season to season.

It averages 7 to 9 feet deep until you get to the area near the island where you can find water 16 to 20 feet. Dont let the shallow water fool you. I catch 90 percent of my fish in Bull in less than 5 feet of water. That is year round. It may be one of the warmest areas of Lower Taney but it rarely differs more than 6 to 8 degrees from the main lake. And I may catch alot of fish "near those lilly pads, but other than the occassion sport bass or crappie, there really isnt that many fish in them. The White bass do like to cruise the edges for there usually is an abundance of bait fish in them. I use them as attractors but not as cover. When the coontails clog up the mouth, you will find alot of trout on the inside of those pesky weeds, Especially if the water isnt generating. The best areas in the creek are definately the flats. There is one on your left as you enter and there is another that comes out to a point right in the middle. you can recognize both from the timber sticking out of the water. The third flat, behind the island, holds fish on the edge but I wouldnt waste alot of time on it.

Reporting A Dump Site In Ar Waters
Trav replied to delta_queen's topic in General Angling Discussion
I hope that the squeaky wheel does get greased. Not to rain on your parade, but it still is what it is. And it is still in Arkansas wich has one of the worst reputations in the nation on this criteria. Even a worse reputation in doing anything about it. Of course, no worse than my reputation for being a pessimist. Good luck to ya. -
Bank fishing is rough here in the ozarks. Soo much private land. Not enough public access. When I used to bank fish alot, I loved to fish Flat Creek for cats at night. My favorite spot was always under Flat Creek Bridge. Last time I took my son ( who was 16 at the time) and we caught about 30 of them fiesty channels.

Sounds like my kind of dog. I am sure my Valentine(as seen on my blog) can teach her some tricks. What is her name? At her age she sounds like she will be great here in the woods alerting her master thet cars have got close. Plus will probably be a friend to Val. Maybe she will have more guts againsts the possums and armadillos. My Val hates to fight animals that dont fight back. She is a chaser.

Typically the bluegill spawn on Lower Taney is a few weeks after the bass spawn. They like to use the old beds of the bass and tend to care less for thier offspring. Males do make the nest though so they tend to be most aggressive first in the spring. Normally I see the gills stage in early april and then they spread off in mid may. Not the case this year. As they normally spread they seem to congrigate near cover. Meaning by this time of year they will be infesting my dock. Not the case! Dont try to judge this lake like others. The cold water pushes warm water species in funny directions. The "cold" hard facts are that all the flood stages timed itself just enough that those warm water fish will be off. Especially after a diluge. I know I am not the only one feeling the reality of that. It goes for ALL species. As long as the water runs high the upper lake benifits and the lower becomes more difficult to figure. When the generaters shut down then the upper suffers and it will take days before the lower responds. Its a human made oxymoron. Trust me on this one thing though....In this lake ...Water temps mean nothing. Fish move according to daylight. And I mean All fish species. Flood situations hinder for granted but typically it is all about the sun.

Reporting A Dump Site In Ar Waters
Trav replied to delta_queen's topic in General Angling Discussion
From my experiance...unless you own the property that is being "dumped", you wont have a legit complaint and you will be observed as a nature hugger. Heck, I push tons(literally) of trash off my dock that end up in Arkansas. Am I supposed to collect all that plastic, foam, and waste? I collect my fair share just fishing. All you can do is take home more trash than you left with and feel that you contributed. The human Anthill is too big to take on yourself and not even the Gov can do it all. Sucks, but it is what it is. -
Is she just a pet or can she work? I only ask because my dogs like to kill varmits. I am down to one now and my Valentine( as seen on my blog) might enjoy a hunting partner. From what I know of Jack Russells they can be viscious territory dogs. Just what I like

Does Conservation Still Stock Ponds?
Trav replied to FishinCricket's topic in General Angling Discussion
Check this site out! http://mdc.mo.gov/documents/fish/aquaguides/fishstock.pdf Missouri Department of Conservation Private Pond Stocking Program Fingerling largemouth bass, bluegill and channel catfish for the initial stocking of a new or renovated pond can be obtained from the Missouri Department of Conservation through its private pond stocking program. To be eligible for participation in the program, a pond must meet the following requirements: Water must be at least eight feet deep. Water and shoreline must be protected from livestock use (ponds over five acres need not be fenced). The dam must be constructed for permanency and water tightness, and the drainage area should be adequate but not excessive for water storage. No undesirable fish may be present prior to stocking. Water quality must be sufficient to ensure the survival of the stocked fish and sustain good fishing. Stocking will not endanger species of conservation concern. Landowners interested in participating in the program, complete a pond stocking application and submit it by July 15th. The pond is inspected, and if it meets the criteria, the landowner is informed of the number of fish that will be provided and the arrangements for fish distribution. Young-of-the year bluegill and channel catfish are distributed in September, and young-of-the-year largemouth bass are distributed the following June. Landowners participating in this program are not obligated to allow fishing or other uses of their land by the general public but the pond and its fish are subject to the regulations of the Wildlife Code of Missouri. -
I think that if it is a necessary task it could just as easily be "copy" and "pasted". Just a snippet from the same Topic , Placed by the Same Member, On the Same day in a different OAF Forumn. As a "been-there", I can say that it has alot to do with whom your associated with, and whom you know, than as it does with talent. It is a popularity thing ultimateley. You cant manage a living without sponsors and you cant get sponsors unless you can sell thier product. Wich requires name recognition for the most part. That requires social buzz through your fellow competitors. Wich as Dutch says, selling yourself, to accomplish a good standing amongst your peers. Talent is a very small part of it. I have talent and almost a decade of experiance doing guide work. I even have tourney Admin experiance and competed/participated in hundreds of tourneys with a 70 percent top 3 finish ratio. But when I went pro I lost the farm. Nobody offered me any sponsorship so when my well went dry, I was done. My failure was totally based on the fact that I am an isolationist and dont socialize. Nor do I "brown nose" to crawl a pedistal of exceptance. My personality is there but not on the surface. And I naively assumed that actions spoke louder than words. Search out some of the previous threads that are here on OAF about working in the industry. There is quite abit said on this topic. Not trying to discourage anyone, just laying down some of the sad hard realities of business. Its very clichish and nepitism is rampant. Its a dog eat dog business and if you arent in bed with a pack, then your wearing the pork chop earings. DonWOW this one hits home for me... I spent many years fishing the local and club events, did ok made some money, but nothing like I really needed to make it. Spent way to much time away from my wife and girls! So I decided to take this to another level and try guiding for a living. It has been hard and still is, but I love it, and my wife loves to see me happy so she puts up with it also. I did some things that most people did not understand for the first three years of guiding, had to stay behind in the shadows of other people and try to learn the in's and outs of guiding, but the stubborn side of me wanted to make it on my own, Well this is my first year on my own, I'm working and paying the bills, well almost if you talk to my wife of 24 years. These things I did I knew would pay off for me in the long run, I just had to deal with it and put in my time. I had to give up fishing tournaments and save my money to make this work. I did and I do miss it alot, but I know will get back into it here really soon. Finding real sponsorships was the challenge, I knew that someone was not just going to handout anything, I had to bust my rear end to get it. So I did, I spent the last 4 years working every sport show I could during the winter, I was gone about 2 months straight every year, and alot of this was for free. But I learned one thing, it's not how good you can fish it's how good you can sell and promote their products and the fishing well that was just icing on the cake. By attending all of these sport shows I was able to meet some really great people in the business to help me fine tune my presentation and skills and believe me I'm still learning to this day. I was lucky and was able to meet a great gentlemen by the name of James Grandt he owns a company called Grandt Rods, a multi million dollar rod company in Chi-town IL. Mr. Grandt taught me alot of the skills I have today. He taught me how to talk with possible sponsors and how to show them you can make a impact on there bottom line and when a Multi-Millionaire takes the time to talk with you man you listen to every word, and that was my lucky break. I was able to work hard and obtain my first really good sponsorship with Grandt Rods and then after some really even harder work I was able to meet with G3 Boats in Lebanon Missouri. Months went by working with the Marketing Director of G3 Boats trying to sell them on the ideal that a guide could help promote and sell there product all over the US. My Business plan and marketing plan was based on the ideal that a guide could place their product in front of 1000's of prospective buyers every year here in Branson Missouri and all over the US. Well after alot of long sleepless nights and many days thinking it was not going to work, it finally fell together I had a really big sponsorship, a real boat deal with a major boat manufacture. I was in the position to start my own company. I've had to teach myself how to market myself and my company via web site presents, had to teach myself how to do that also, because I could not afford to have one built for me. There is alot of beating on doors and taking alot of "NO" we are not interested! But I stuck with it and kept moving forward, believe me I have made alot of mistakes and have learned from everyone of them and I know I'm not out of the woods yet. But I know I'm on the right path now and the phone is ringing everyday. So if you are really interested in making this a real job, here is what to keep in mind. 1) Start small, work your way up, don't try to hit that home run right off the bat. 2) Ask questions and Ask for help from anyone that will help you. 3) Don't be afraid to knock on doors. Meet as many people as you can. 4) Understand Business if you don't then read everything you can find! 5) A good Resume and Business plan goes a long way. 6) Don't do stupid things, think before you act, and if you do make a mistake fix it and learn from it. "Phil Lilley knows what I'm talking about on that one, that was one of my not to forget mistakes!" 7) If you fall get back up and try again " Never say Never" 8) Make this a fun job, and if it get to the point were it is no fun then remember where you came from and what you used to do! 9) And last but not least work hard then work even harder! I spend more time now working then I ever had before, is it worth it Hell YES. Hope this helps some, sorry if I rambled on but it really hit home with me and everything I have been through to get were I'm at today. Good Fishing Everyone Capt. Don House Trav Capt Don Number 8 is exactly why I dont do the tourney thing anymore. And after almost a decade of being a guide and catering to others I had almost lost all drive for the fun of the sport. I finally had to just get selfish and start thinking of what I wanted instead of servicing or competing. It is very important not to lose grip of the fact that it is a pleasure sport and not get wrapped up with treating it like an industry. Doesnt matter what you do for a living. When your zeal becomes your job, it can quickly turn into a grind. If you dont keep open your perspective as to why you jumped into it from the start, and hang on to that, your favorite hobby can quickly be something you "have" to do other than what you "want" to do.

Hey Crappie, You know I dont do alot of crappie fishing and my old 400 series humminbird doesnt give me water temps. But I did have an interesting conversation with Russel (aka Naru?) yesterday while I was pushing logs off my dock. He was explaining his findings on water temps in the Lower. So if you want exact temps he will be a good guy to ask. The temps vary so little through out the year on Taney, that it is quite difficult to determine when the crappie( and Bass as pertained to our conversation) will be close to a spawn. It is much easier to factor the number of hours a dayight there is. Wich is the most determining factor on all fish movement on Taneycomo. This includes ALL fish. Even the Brownies run up stream in the months there are few hours of sun. (Brownies are a very nocternal species. The majority of thier movement happens at night. Just ask Leonard and he can probably confirm that.) And the presence of a fall moot-spawn in Bass confirms that the daylight pretty much rules this lake in that regard. As far as Crappie( to get back to the Topic at hand,) Take what you know about them in other lakes, but keep in mind that water temp is low on the prerequisites for them to spawn. If I am correct, Crappie are equal light/dark spawners wich means they should be done by now. But with all the crazy water, who knows where everything is anymore. I for one, will be glad when it is 90 degrees everyday and the heat of the summer puts the lake as a whole back into a more recognizable pattern.

I understand it as only bluegills, sunfish, or bullhead under 5 inches may be used as bait no matter the method they were taken. Code States; (4) Length Limits: All bluegill, green sunfish and bullheads more than five inches (5") in total length and other fish more than twelve inches (12") in total length must be returned to the water immediately after being caught by the methods prescribed in this rule, except there are no length limits for bighead carp, common carp, gizzard shad, goldfish, grass carp and silver carp. (2) Methods. (A) Live bait may be taken by a trap with throat opening not to exceed one and one-half inches (1 1/2") in any dimension, dip net, throw net, pole and line, or a seine not more than twenty feet (20') long and four feet (4')deep, of a mesh not more than one-half inch (1/2") bar measure. ( Live bait, except fish, may be taken by hand. © Crayfish may also be taken by trap with an opening not to exceed one and onehalf inches (1 1/2") by eighteen inches (18").

I dont fish weekends. As far as cover/structure.......I used to be able to find every stick in the mud, but since they opened the flood gates, alot of it has shifted or dissapeared altogether. On the lighter side, new ones have popped up. Certain flats and points have had some changes as well. Some have gotten bigger while others have all but dissapeared. Most the changes are quite suttle and unless you have fished the area for a number of years you probably wont notice much more. I havent really done a thorough investigation, just a quick overview. I will get a better feel for it all later this summer when I am confident the Brownies have settled in. Thats when I will be hitting the deep 20 to 40 foot holes. I am sure I will have to work for my fish for at least a year until I have my dozen or so spots again. With me, its all routine and systematic. I rotate my holes some but I play the averages game. If I know fish hole up in a certain spot, I just fish it over and over. Sooner or later my luck always breaks and it pays off. Its not the funnest way to fish, but I do catch quite a few Brownies over 20 inches that way.
