Anyone Tried These Furled Leaders At Bennett
Hopper replied to rcguy's topic in Bennett Springs State Park
It's super easy to build your own for just pennys, go to youtube and type furled leaders and the video by flatslanders shows you how to make them without tools or jigs, I use them on my 3, 5, and 8 wts with great success. Its easy to add tippet rings or swivels depending on how you are going to use them. Gregg -
I've got you beat, saber hooks from flyshack.com $6.99 for 100 and free shipping for orders over $35.00 and you'll get them 2-3 days. I've never had a problem with them, I've had di-riki and BPS hooks break on me while fighting fish. Gregg

Great day for me at norfork, lots of rainbows, a few browns, and my first cutthroat, but could not find that brookie for a grand slam. What happened to the horn before opening the gates!! The schedual had one gate a noon. I was heading for the bank just a couple of minutes before noon to grab some lunch and noticed the current was increasing, and let the other people in the area know. It was a very close call for one gentelman, if there had'nt been a young lady close to him for help I don't think he would have made it, he went down twice before she could grab him and help him to the bank, and she went down once in the process, I was still out helping a older gentleman to shallow water. From the time I noticed the increase in current to every one out of the water was maybe three minutes four at the most. The horn did sound at 12:20 thanks for the warning. Gregg

Since your only going to be there a short time, start at the lost creek diversion dam and work down to the lost hole this will give you your best chance for success. I have had the most success using soft hackles and midges. Midges under an indicator have landed some nice fish, 18# and 20'S. Use a #16 or 18 midge as an attractor fly and add a #18 or #20 midge dropper 12-18 inches down. Dead drift soft hackles just like fishing a wolly bugger. Gregg

I build my own furled leaders(youtube/ furled leaders)the vidieo is by flatlanders guide service. build the leaders by what weight rod you are using I.E. 4/5 wt 4 lb test super easy and fast to make and a small spool will last you forever. One leader will last a year or more and only cost a few cents to make. Almost zero memory, they turn over easy and if you get a wind knot they come out easy. I use Orvis fluoro carbon tippet about a 3 ft. section. and for drys 2 lb furled leader 8x fluro tippet on a 3 wt. You will save enough not having to by leaders that buying the fluoro tippet is not a big deal, you'll catch alot more fish Gregg

My Trout Management Wish List
Hopper replied to ozark trout fisher's topic in General Angling Discussion
I agree, I'd like to see more catch and release areas single point artificial, fly only(not fly fish only) I take my mom to tanny in the trophy waters and rig her up with a ultra light dead drift set up, and mini jigs. I wish more tickets were written for littering. Gregg -
I'll pull my boat up to the fairgrounds Fri. morning. I'll be at the conclave with the Tulsa Fly Fishers, we usually do alot of fishing, but I'm sure we can work out a trip during the weekend. Gregg

I've posted a few times about my drift boat, and had a few responses about getting together with some other wood drifters, I,ll be at the conclave in Mt. Home on the 1st thru 3rd Oct. Any thoughts about getting together during that weekend? Gregg

Its is wadeable in certian areas, it brings the water up about two feet, stay closer to the bank and add more weight to your fly, fish 6-8 ft under an indicator, I,ve caught some nice fish during 6-10 mw generation. Gregg

I'm here. Just been taking a sabbatical. How many people (perhaps even yourself) have you heard say something to the effect of "Man a 3 day weekend barely gives me time to start slowing down so I can fish"? We've all seen them. They roar into the parking area in a cloud of dust, jump out and start throwing on gear, grab their rod and charge into the water like a Carabou with a Grizzly behind him. After putting every fish within a quarter mile under a rock in abject terror the angler then churns the water to froth with fruitless casts. My preferred course is to slow down first. A half hour may not be enough and some may just need a few minutes to realign thought processes polluted by 6 months of city stresses. But however long it takes the fisherman will reap great rewards the remainder of his allotted time on the water if he makes the investment up front. By using the time necessary to re-tune his soul with natural rhythms to observe feeding activity and retrain the eyes to spot fish when that first great sigh of well-being and release wells up he is ready for the fray. It's something of a combination of what Al described but I just think of it as common sense. CC Holy cr@# I can barely make it through the week let alone six months of city and job stresses before I hit the water again:D

Drift Boat On Upper Illinois?
Hopper replied to sean c's topic in Upper and Lower Illinois River (OK)
I have not drifted the lower, Greg Dodds (checkurfly.com) guides the upper with a drift boat. I'm actually thinking about putting in at Gore landing this weekend and chasing some stripers. Fished the White river below Cotter two weeks ago, lots of fish (Pic) Gregg -
Heading To Crane Creek This Evening (Report Now Inside)
Hopper replied to Trout Commander's topic in Crane Creek
If you get a chance to fish the hole below the ped. bridge under the rock overhang in the city park there are two very nice bows(+/-24")one will have a peach egg pattern and the other will have a #14 brown bugger in there lip, they use that log under the overhange to there advantage a 3wt with 6x tippet I did'nt have much chance of slow em down. I fished it last Fri 8-6-10. some really nice fish in that little creek, Lots of poision ivy, and a few copperheads. Gregg -
Anyone heading over to sling some flies tommorrow? Think I'll start at T&M. Gregg

That was me, fished tanney Sat. and Mon., fishing was definately tougher, fishing pressure was pretty high also, never seen that many anglers, if you see me again go ahead and take alook. Gregg

I have to say Sunday at Rims Shoals was the day of fishing I've every had. Took my drift boat I built to the upper end of the shoals and fished the fast water and never had a slow moment. Red was the ticket, I used a #16 glass bubble head red d-rib midge with a red #18 copper john dropper and had to change them out 4 times because the were flat worn out from all the takes, went to the lower end in the after noon and caught more and one decent brown. Gregg

I run a two fly rig under the indicator fly,tie 24-30" of 6x floro to the bend of the dry indicator tie on fly add 12-18' 6x to that add another fly. I dont seem to have to worry about depth much, in the riffles the water is moving fast enough to keep it off the bottom and in slower water your bottom fly is deep enough to draw fish off the bottom. The Watts area is about half wat between Marvel and the Dam, a small blue sign on the right hand side of the road. This is an area the wildlife dept. bought with the legacy money from license sales, 300 acres with river frontage. Gregg

Fishing was excellent this weekend, they had what I would call a minimum flow going.Fish are getting some good size to them, only fish I caught that were stocker size were two browns at the watts area 6" and 10", one small striper on a #16 copper john. Did see some huge stripers but didn't break out the 8 wt. Met jwpage on Sunday he and I caught some nice fish as the water dropped out in the afternoon. Gregg

Fished both Sat. and Sun. fishing was fantastic, fished mostly midges under indicator fly, #20 red thread midge caught the most fish, and of course soft hackles killed them. Caught two browns one about 14". Gregg

Memorial Day Generation Schedule
Hopper replied to bstarbird's topic in Upper and Lower Illinois River (OK)
Still 2.24 ft above power pool, I'd say about a 50/50 chance they won't generate, but since it is a holiday weekend chances are probably a little better. -
Completed canoe last weekend, some pics of test run. My dad is in the pilots seat giving his new vessel a test run. Also a few pics of another project i started a few weeks ago (drift boat). Gregg

Best Fishing On Taneycomo Ever In My 27 Years Here.
Hopper replied to Phil Lilley's topic in Upper Lake Taneycomo
I would have to agree, I've only been to tanney a dozen times, it was non stop action. I tied on a olive 1/100 marabou jig with a red zebra midge dropper and if they did'nt hit the midge on the drift, it was the jig as I stripped it in, dont know how many I caught, unreal ammount! . I was anchored at the top of the big hole in my canoe and did'nt have to move all day. -
looks like the water will be down tommorrow and water temps up (60's), should be lots of fish below zink dam. I'll probably be down there around 8:30am. Gregg
