I was on the current over the weekend. Caught lots of small fish. I did have one fish over 16" but the bulk of the fish were between 11" & 13". the best fishing is from daylight untill about 10:00, after that, the jetboats were out in full force. I still caught a few fish during the middle of the day, but fighting the traffic is not my kind of fishing, so we mostly boated, floated, and swam.

Yea, this is a good pattern most of the year, but it seems to be a pattern in the summer that will produce more fish per spot than would be taken at other times of the year when the fish are scattered. It seems the fish consentrate in these spots in the summer and are hard to find in other areas such as the slow holes.

repairing Leaking waders
Kicknbass replied to Kicknbass's topic in Tips & Tricks, Boat Help and Product Review
Good deal. I'm glad this worked out for you as well. I got mine a week ago. Brand new waders after 2 years of heavy use. I can't wait to break them in. -
Sad and senseless way to check out.

After reading Al's post on another thread, I thought it might be good to reveal tips on removing line twist. After trolling, even though I typically use a swivel, my line will twist and become uncastable. To rid this, I will cut the terminal tackle from the line, let out the the same amount of line that I had out while trolling and run (slowly) back to the dock. This allows the line to untwist back to normal. I have also untwisted line in streams after using in-line spinner in the same manner by letting the line out in the current. Any other methods?

I hope it works out. Glad to help. -
How is the bass fishing on the lower taney? Do you catch mostly large or small mouth?

The river is good size in the middle part of the current. Lots of Jetboats. There is a HP limit of 40 hp. For about 8-10 miles each side of the Van Buren bridge, there are a number of canoes and tubers as well. I know that towards Doniphan, the river is pretty large and no HP restriction.

repairing Leaking waders

Brian, I took your advice and sent my waders in to Orvis. I fortunately had kept my receipt w/ the repair kit that you get w/ the purchase of the waders, and was able to send a copy of the reciept w/ the waders. I got a call from Orvis last week, and talked to service department. I hoped that they would be able to repair the waders, and was willing to pay a reasonable price for the repair. Wrong..... They explained that the waders were not repairable. I figured they might sell me another pair for a reduced price. Wrong..... She said the didn't have the same waders for sale any more. I was kinda bummed until she said, we have another color. I asked how much? Oh, no charge, I just wanted you to know that the color was differant and that you approved before the waders were shipped. I was floored... 3 + years of use 20 -30 dates a year fishing and duck hunting and they are sending me a new pair for no cost, not even shipping cost. They just thanked me for keeping the reciept and making things easy for them. I think I can live with the light green color in lieu of the dark green... Kudo's to Orvis. and thanks for the advise Brian. -

What is the best location near Waterloo? I have business in Cedar Falls and travel 1-2 times a month. I like to break the trip up w/ 2-3 hours of recreation. Any suggestions? I found the hathery location from the IDNR website. It is out of the way from STL but seams to be the closets trout water along the route. -
I understand your pain. I wouldn't be an avocate to ban tournaments from the rivers, but measure and release tournament rules would be much healthier on the fishery. The fish could be measured, logged, and photo'd and immediately released back to the water that they were taken.

Fishing Report - Middle Current - Smallmouth
Kicknbass replied to Kicknbass's topic in Current River
Yes, off season and middle of the week. I have found that a weekend just prior to or, just after a major Holiday weekend can be lighter than others. On major weekends, plan on sharing the river with lots of others. I catch most of my fish from Daylight untill about 10:00 am, then go get my family and join the rest of the idots running the river. You know, if you can't beat'em join'em. I've caught many 18+ fish on the river, and a few over 19, but have only seen one over 20" and I didn't get to catch it. One fall afternoon in the early 70's, my dad and I were anchored fishing a hole. He caught a 18+, then I caught a 19+ then he topped it off w/ a 25+ fish with in about 1/2 hour. I was about 8 years old and will never forget that day. I thought that fish would pull me in. I begged him to take the rod, but he calmly encouraged me to relax and let the fish fight and wear down. I've been hooked on fishing ever since. Last year, I did catch a 20+ fish on Table Rock Lake. I was fishing alone that day, no one to encourage me to relax that day. Anything to report? -
I've had success w/ Smallmouth and Spots dragging a double Carolina rig ( grubb & cenipede) on the gravel flats. Find out what depth the fish are in, and try to keep your bait on the bottom with in that target range. Let the wind drift you across a point or use your trolling motor to move you the direction your need to go to keep your bait in the stike zone. I've found most fish will be on the upstream side of the point. I was at Table Rock last week, and caught most of my fish using this method. Half spots, and half smallies. The fish were on the bottom in 30 - 40 feet.

Fishing Report - Middle Current - Smallmouth
Kicknbass replied to Kicknbass's topic in Current River
I was fishing below Owls Bend. Caught most fish on soft plastics drifting 4" worms and grubbs. Caught a few on crank baits, some on jigs, it depending on the structure that you were fishing. -
Were the fish scattered or in a specific pattern? Still deep holes, rocks, riffles? I was fishing the Current river, and found that most of the best fish caught were in the lower end of the holes around rock on the transition between the deep hole and the riffles below the holes. The bite slowed down during the day when the jet boat traffic got busy. I did catch a few fish deep tight to structure during the day, but it slowed considerably.
-
Nice report. I need to float that river soon. Was the bite on most of the day, or typical morning and evening bite?
-
Any news on the tournement results? How many pounds to win? The fishing was good where I was.

The fish wanted to play this weekend. We caught and released several legal fish (12”) each morning. Saturday Morning, from 6-9, we boated about 15 legal fish w/ several other short fish. The best fish of the morning was a 16" toad w/ several others over 14". Most fish came on soft plastics w/ an occasional fish on cranks. At 9 am, we went back to camp to eat breakfast and get the families out on the river to play. After about 11, too many boats to fish effectively. The canoes and Jetboats are tough to fish around on a holiday weekend. Sunday Morning, same time - Not as many fish 6 legal fish w/ the best being a 17 1/2" fish. Same baits, different locations. Monday Morning, 6-8 - Another good morning 6 legal fish w/ 3 over 14" the largest being 15 1/2" I love to haul in those feisty smallies in the current. These fish really know how to use the current to their advantage.

Thanks. I'll be on the river upstream a few miles. The current is pretty be in this area. Not too far below Van Buran Big spring flows in to the river. The river is fair size below the spring. The first 8 miles above Van Buran is nuts. Lots of floaters and tubers. If you get above Waymeyer access. It is not too bad. The next major access is Log yard and the outfitters consider this a two day float to Van Buran. Log yard is 10 river miles above Waymeyer but about 50 hwy miles. Not a very good shuttle.
