I wanted to do a small writeup on Maramec Springs. This has been the only place I've been able to fish for trout this last year.
Everyone seemed to catch close to or their limit. There were families filling coolers with stock trout. Of course, power bait is the bait everyone uses. (I know that isn't true, but it sure does seem like it.) I guess that is why people don't post on here about the great trout they landed like they do on the tanneycomo forum, but there are some good trout swimming there. Saturday an eleven year old boy caught over a 6 pounder. The look on his face was priceless.
I did so-so. Had a hook up on a black wooly bugger, and some strikes on a small streamer. I went back Sunday and again people were pulling trout out like clock work. One young man caught two trout over 5 pounds. When I asked what he was using(he had spinning rod) he said that he was using some kind of small fly that had gold in it. One fly fisher when asked how many he had caught, told the fellow that he had four and yet he fished on. Maybe I was wrong and he was catch and releasing.
I saw one boy four or five year old reeling in a fish. He was doing a fine job. His father came and netted it for him. When I walked by them, he said, I caught a trout. The pride in his voice echoed in his fathers smile. I remember myself as a four or five year old catching my first bluegill at Lake of Ozarks. I won't be back until the Women fish free day in September but Maramec Springs is just a nice little park. Go visit if you can.
