  1. The ones from wal-mart for $4.16 work good for me.

-I saw those Brad Wiggleres over there on TW too. And was thinking the same thing as gotmuddy. Those Brad Wigglers are no bargains compared to the original either, and you're not really getting any custom paint job from the looks of things.

-I would imagine they are just some less expensive blanks Brad's paints. But looking more closely, a LOT of their patterns look just like Wiggle Wart patterns!?!!?!?.........that confuses me?

  2. I wouldn't think the fish would be too discriminating on the topwater bite if the cicadas are falling all over in the water. But, I'm sure the added detail/realistic style bait wouldn't hurt in clear water.

    -

Those white bass sure are fun to catch. I'm a nervous guy and have a tough time throwing pricey cranks; especially if a school of white bass are on the prowl. I've gone through 3-4 crankbaits in a night of good white bass fishing; they're viscious! :angry1:

  3. I've noticed up here (about 4 hours from The Rock) that a lot of our Cicadas are dying off. Not sure if it's the end of the life-cycle for them, or what?

    -

Just curious if the same thing is happening down at The Rock?

    -

And if so, do the bass have any interest in those that dive into the water and buzz on the surface?

    -

Then this brings me to my next question. I've always marveled at some of the Megabass designs. One in particular is the Siglett. It seems this would be an ideal lure for topwater action when the cicadas take their last buzz on the surface. Anybody ever have any stories of cicada related topwater action? or any use of the siglet? (maybe it's more of an Ozark Stream kinda lure?)

    -

Here's some info and pix (click on the link for even cooler colors/styles.....I'm a sucker for that kinda stuff  , but my wallet is not -_- )

  4. Re: bluegills. I have always used that term for any type of bluegill/sunfish/pumpkinseed/redear/whatever I would catch. But, what type of panfish is the most prevelant at The Rock?

    -

I was thinking just the good ole fashioned Male Bluegill is what I recall seeing the most?

  5. Bumping this to report that today I mailed Tim Hughes several Top Dollars for painting. I have Daiichi Death Trap trebles waiting to install when they return. I asked him to do Blue Shad, House Bait #2, Slimmer, and Gizzard. Now I must wait. Fall topwater time should be ready to begin when they return. I will post pictures.

My wife believes I have totally lost my mind. "You are paying what to have a $5 bait repainted? Why don't you just buy the color you want?" My metaphysical answer fell on deaf ears.

    -

Sound like some great colors! Can't wait to see them.

    -

My wife asked why I started airbrushing my own cranks, vs. why not just buy the ones in the colors you want? My response............because they simply don't make the baits I want, in the colors I want...............she still dosn't understand.!?!?!

    -

And for the time and effort it takes to get quality results on a crankbait; what Tim Hughes charges is a steal! I don't know how some of these guys do it!?!?!

    -

A lot of crankbait painters post it can take between 4-12 hours of work on one bait. From the little painting I've done, I believe this is accurate. Of course if your painting a run of lures identical to each other; that speeds things up. But, the time working on a bait all does depend on the pattern/colors/detail, etc.; and that is only ACTUAL time working on the bait. Not including drying time of the colors/topcoat.

  6. Motoman,

if I can accomplish even 1/2 of what you have here in just over a year I would be impressed with myself. Wow, great job on the crankbaits. As fine as what you would see on the shelf at Bass Pro. Thanks for your info. To you and everyone for the information share so far. I can see I am going to get addicted!

-Thanks for the kudos trout, but I've got a ways to go. I'm not real good with fine details........yet. Although I say that, forgetting I'm not getting any younger, and I don't have a real steady hand as it is. Airbrushing cranks is a GREAT winter hobby! That's how I got started.

  7. I've only been at it since last winter, but I started with spray paint to see if I liked it. I was quickly addicted.

    -

I stepped up to an airbrush (Harbor Freight 2-stage cheapy @ $15, and still use it, but will upgrade soon). 2-stage is very critical to control paint/air flow. I also recommend a gravity feed brush. The Harbor Freight one is not, so I just turn it upside down and drip paint into it. Each crank only requires a few drips of paint for color. I went with the Harbor Freight for starters so I didn't have lot invested, in case I strayed from it. But any of the Iwata/Badger and several others are great. The Harbor Freight one has a .35 mm tip; which is a good all around tip size for detail work, to broad work.

    -

For a compressor, I just use my 30 gallon Campbell Hausfeld in the garage set between 15-40 psi. (depending on colors/viscosity) I use Createx and Auto-Air, both water based and Createx is available at Hobby Lobby and Michaels which are both within 20 minutes of me. The beauty of these also, are that you need very little ventilation. I still wear a mask, as the paint is finely atomized; but you don't have the fumes with automotive style paints. (serious ventilation needed for those paints!:blur: )

    -

I use sandpaper 400 grit to rough up old cranks, then down to 600 if they're really boogered up and have a lot of old paint to remove. Then just alcohol for painting. If they have a good topcoat still, just scotchpad them for some abrasive surface for the paint to adhere too.

    -

As far as stencils, as mentioned, any type of mesh material/veil works. But, Janns Netcraft sells scale masking. (plastic mesh bags that small tomatos come in works good too!) I'll try and attach a pic of some stencisl I made. I just made copies of Lucky Craft/Rapala/Megabass cranks, and use an exacto knife to cut out the pattern I want to shoot paint through.

    -

As far as topcoat. I started using Devcon 2-Ton. It MUST be the 30 minute set time, and you MUST mix the Resin and Hardener thoroughly and evenly (available at ACE hardware cheap). The 30 minute stuff actually only gives you a few minutes to brush it all on, before it starts setting up. You will need to have something to turn the lure on overnight to prevent drips from the topcoat. I used an old BBQ rotisserie, and put alligator clips on it. It SLOWLY turns the cranks until the topcoat sets up nicely to where it won't drip. (I've moved on to Dick Nites clear topcoat, but that stuff is a bit tricky to store; but that's a whole other conversation; I'll try and keep things simple for now. ;)

    -

I occasionally paint spinnerbaits and blades; but that opens a whole other can of worms. :D

    -

There are certainly FAR better painters than I, but these are some things I've learned in my trials and tribulations. Patience is the key for good results. I can't emphasize that enough! B)

    -

Sorry to rattle on and hog the thread. Just trying to help. I'll shut up now. Feel free to IM me or e-mail me if needed.

    -

Here's some pix of stuff I've done along the way with Createx and the Harbor Freight $15 brush.

    -

    Here's 2 Vision 110 style blanks I painted. (I know, they're a bit out there)

  8. Not sure of the legalities of the picture, unless he mentions where he caught them all at? But, is it worth forwarding the pic to DNR and have them lean on him a bit? or a game warden or other type of authority? Maybe just give him a good scare if that's the best that can be done.

    -

I guess only an issue if caught in public water..................?

    -

Probably tough to have anything done to that clown.

    -

I'm just thinking out loud here............for what it's worth.

  9. Great post gitnby! I've occasionally worn a camelback when fishing in extreme heat. (yes, the military uses them too) For those not familiar, it's a small backpack/hip pack with a hose that you clip up by your mouth. It's a great way to stay hydrated, no bending down; just take a sip!

    -

I'm bad about fishing, and not wanting to keep bending down to drink something. <_<

    -

It never fails, several guys I've fished with barely eat or drink anything ALL DAY! They make bad decisions throughout the day, and complain all evening/night about not feeling well. I can tell them a thousand times to drink something, but they don't listen!

    -

And for the record, alcohol is the WORST thing to drink to stay hydrated. Don't fool yourself! :angry2:

  10. Awesome report Bill. And great pix! Not just of fish, but exact tackle! :D You won't find THAT on any other message boards. :goodjob: Keep up the good work, and keep those reports coming. They're a thrill to read for those of us who can't get on the water very often.

  11. I may be mistaken, but I believe LOZ is the primary source for the state's walleye broodstock. They run up to Truman dam in the spring, and the MDC folks take some over to Lost Valley in Warsaw.

    I think...

    -

HHHHhhhmmmm........I like that sound of that! :goodjob:

    -

If anyone prefers to IM me some Walleye tips at LOZ, feel free. In case they don't want to advertise some info. I know on some of the other lake forums we've done that. :ninja: And as Gilligan once said; "Mums the word!"

    -

shaker, I just realized my lunch hour at work is quickly ending. I'll try and post some info later; or you can search under the LOZ section for last year posts from me in the meantime.

  12. -

Walleyeguy, not sure if night fishing for walleye is unheard of, but we go down all summer and night fish for white bass. The boat traffic is no big deal. I would NEVER even have entertained the idea of hitting LOZ between Memorial Day to Labor Day, but a co-worker goes every weekend, and turned me onto to it.

    -

We fish the Glaize, and it's really great. Tolerable night time temps, minimal to no boat traffic and TONS of fish. Heck, on average, we'll boat 50-100 nice whites on one weekend night. If walleye fishing is any good at night, it's worth hanging around the Glaize arm. ;)

    -

Speaking of Walleye, and the Glaize Arm............DING! :goodjob: Last night white bass fishing in the Glaize, buttoned up a 3+ pound walleye on a craw pattern Shad Rap. The fella I fished with was thrilled! I let him keep it.

    -

I was telling him about this thread and that there are some devoted walleye guys; he was excited to hear it. He's fished The Ozarks his whole life, is down every weekend and had a place down there for 30 years. Hadn't heard much of devoted walleye guys on LOZ.

    -

Would love to hear some tips or suggestions about it to give him some leads. (May be worthy of a new thread) ;)

  13. ........

Finally, if you know you are going to fish deeper than 25' deep you better know how to fizz your fish. I can tell you how many guys bring sick fish in at a weigh in because they are fishing deep and don't know how to fizz them. Seriously, don't fish that deep if you can't take care of your fish....

    -

    Eric (or anyone else),

I have no affiliation to this company, or anything to gain by posting this. But, does anyone have a thought about this product? (would it work?) It's plenty cheap. :)

    -

I've been intrigued by it, as it seems like a simple alternative to fizzing fish.........if it works.

  14. I fish LOZ quite often. Great walleye fishery. Although with Memorial Day coming up, I won't launch my Ranger 619 until fall. Too many idiots on that body of water for me from Memorial Day to Labor Day.

I run an 1197 SI unit. I love it for eliminating water.

No problemo snakem, if you're anything like me, those bigguns know when I have the camera; then they never show up. <_< No camera, here come the lunkers.

  16. I've gotten so much info from you guys.. i have to reply. I took 3 kids out yesterday, we caught quite a few small spots.. biggest prob in 1.5lb range plus one of the kids caught about a 3lb smallie in the cemetary area across from joe bald ramp. Spot remover jig w/wat-red trick worm. 2-5pm, from the bank out to 20 feet or so. Just followed the top water action back and forth. Did catch one fish on a fluke, but the trick worm was much more consistent.

    -

Good info Nolan. I can only imagine the excitement of being a kid and catching a 3 pound smallie on The Rock! :goodjob:

  17. Was on the water befor daylight,Bill if you got my P. M.last night same spot this am.WOW first fish was a SJ at 4.5 on my digital scales. What a pig, full of eggs.Wound up with 4 over probley 14.5# 2 LM @ 1K with that pig of a SJ.All on the FIN.Till about 9:30 am.

    -

Those of us who can't make it down often have to e-fish (if I can coin the phrase) through the interwebs, via you locals down there. :P

  18. I am headed to table rock this weekend and looking to bowfish for some Gar, Can anyone give me some information on what the best place to find some Gar would be. looking for some clearish water and accessible ramps not to far away. Thanks any info would help

    -

Spear, keep us posted on how you do. I used to bowfish in my younger days with a buddy and it was a heckuva good time. More poeple should really look into it; it's a blast! :goodjob:
