(OAF 3) “I’m so tired of these liberals and their bleeding hearts. We’ve always dingled flibberty-gibbits, and as long as it is legal, I’ll keep doing it. And I ain’t a hillbilly. What with a socialist in the white house, it won’t be long before I won’t even be able to snorgle flibberty-gibbits without a permit!!”

(OAF 5) “I’m reading these comments and I seriously can’t believe it. First, OAF 1, how would you like it if someone dingled you? I’m guessing you’ve never had that happen!! (Mad face) Of all the ways to [procure, catch, trap] flibberty-gibbits, dingling has to be the most inhumane, and the most damaging to the population. And OAF 2 – they’re not endangered now, but if all these backwoods hillbillies keep dingling flibberty-gibbits without proper technique, they will be soon. We should be glad that concerned citizens are supporting this. And this isn’t a liberal vs. conservative issue – it’s a conservation issue. “

Look up wikipedia's article on lead poisoning. (and yes, myself and other scientists use wikipedia for an occasional quick reference - it is more reliable than you would think) i like the idea of banning lead in splitshots and other weights as wayne proposed. It seems strange to me that a logical move would meet such resistance. Why not do little things to protect yourself and the environment? (besides this being the land of the free, of course) Perhaps some of us have been sucking on our split-shots too long? see link http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Decreased_Brain_Volume_from_Lead_Exposure.jpg (cited in PLoS Medicine)

well right now, its slow due to the past heat. It should pick up though. As for fellows, you have to get there very very early (before sunup) to have decent success from the bank. you'll catch white bass and largemouth on small spinners and crankbaits, and catfish on cut bait (or using a 1inch chunk of hotdog.) Fellows lake is a tough lake most of the time. (and there are no trout) It's tough around here if you don't have a boat. ?I don't either, and I've had to scrap to find good fishing locations, but they are there. Look through the james river and little sac river forums for ideas on spring walleye and white bass fishing. If you look through some topics (and find maps), there are good bank fishing accesses. And a lot of folks aren't keen sharing their 'spots'. Taneycomo is good for catching trout, but certain conditions are better than others. Early am and later evening are best with powebait (use Berkely Gulp brand). Fishing ahead or in a rainstorm is also helpful. Ideally, there will be 1-3 units generating to keep the fish active, but not make bank fishing difficult. It's been rough this summer in the heat, but wait till fall and winter - it'll pick up in a big way. Keep looking around the forum, and ask questions - people are glad to help.

For us folks who have been fishing with lead all our lives, it does seem silly. However, now that we are more informed, why not make the gradual switch away from lead? Announce that using in jigheads and suchlike will be illegal effective in 3 years or so. That way, the waynes with all the $$ of equipment will have a chance to use it before the ban. It has long been the nature of society to change traditional practices based on intelligent information. This seems like the case, given the scientific evidence of lead poisioning. I'd tell you where my honey holes are, but I keep forgetting where they are myself... must be the lead...

It would be a shame if we didn't get lead poisioning when we bit down on our split shot sinkers. I would hate to have to pay more for sinkers. Give me all the effects of lead. How do we feel about lead in toys from China?(I'm guessing not good). Now think about all the young fishermen biting split shots with their mouths... but that's ok? I've always wondered why lead sinkers were allowed.

50 triploid rainbows stocked in Taneycomo. My suggestion to MDC.

Maybe I'm Just A Little Behind But What Is This?

a little off topic. I have never been able to explain existence, and neither has anyone else (adequately), in the absense of God. The fact that things ARE, that awareness exists, if you get down to the root of it, cannot be explained. Something in us looks for meaning, looks for explainations. Human knowledge can give us as far as this is made up of this, and this happens because of these physical events, but cannot give meaning or purpose to any of it. And cannot explain how it exists. Even if I can somehow believe that all matter exploded out of one tiny little void, I cannot explain the impetus or the stimulus that caused it to be so. It take more faith for me not to believe in God. This applies only to me as well. And what Trevor says is correct - we wont change each others minds. This one has the potential to make people mad, and there is little profit in it. Won't be responding again - happy fishing! -

I have wondered this as well. I think the thing that I take comfort in is that God is good, and knows proper judgement (discernment) more than we can even imagine. If our premise is that God is good, and we know intrinsically that it would be wrong for everyone who hadn't heard of his Word to be put in hell, then we can infer that he has a just plan, but perhaps hasn't shared it with us. The bible is a book of the little we know of God, and it does well to get us what we need - the knowledge of how to please him, and the knowledge of our salvation. I would expect the books of things we do NOT know about God and his nature would fill many many shelves. That's why, while I know in my heart what is right, I am slow to criticize the beliefs of others. Many questions we don't know the answer to - but I wouldn't get upset if humans can't provide the answers. Has anyone eaten coyote? -

it is legal. and awful, painful, drawn-out way to die (being stuck in a metal trap for hours), but legal nonetheless. I wouldn't do it to another human, I wouldn't do it to an animal except in need of food. -

+1 (and Lilley - I couldn't resist injecting some politics - it just felt like the right thing to do ) -

haha - he didn't have much impact at all - it was just reassuring to have a fisherman in the white house. I think it was BassMaster that reported that while Bush Sr. was a laid back sea-kittenerman, Bush jr. was extremely focused and serious about it. I agree with eric tho - PETA has legit issues, and I agree with them on some things as well. I just cant believe they waste their time on the looney stuff like fishing... -

When we had this guy in office, we didn't need to worry about it (nice hybrid Putin!) http://blogs.abcnews.com/photos/uncategorized/2007/07/02/bush_putin_fishing_2.jpg It is a fishing forum, but what other topic lends itself to religion and politics so easily on OA? -

I don't recall any atheism digs... perhaps you confused me with another person? Sorry, if not. -

Jesus said that the law and the prophets was summed up in 'love God, and thy neighbor as thyself'. He fulfilled the law by doing this - abolishing the things that were symbolic (not eating 'unclean' things, vanquishing 'enemies' ect) and made it a personal thing of the heart for all people. I can't remember any non-Jews doing animal sacrifices according to the old law in the new testament. Back to fishing...? -

Is there a government agency that protects against animal cruelty? I actually have no idea, but I've never heard of one. PETA obviously thinks there isn't, and takes matters into their own hands. I feel that [in instances not related to the direct gathering of food for yourself or others] you should be willing to experience anything you would force an animal to endure. Course, the fur farmers would have to change careers...and puppy mill operators... As far as fishing goes, if I didn't have chunks of my cerebral cortex and couldn't feel pain (only sensation), I could tolerate a hook in the mouth. As long as I was eaten, or quickly released. We would just have to learn to spit quickly when we took a bite of hamburger and felt the line! -
You did better than we did - wife and I went out Monday and caught a lm, a couple bluegill, and she caught the biggest white bass I've ever seen landed - thing was huge - but nothing else. We were trolling for walleye, but sunny and hot = hard fishing.
