  1. ANGLER OBSTRUCTION - a job #4 HOPPER DOODLE - a live grasshopper secretly baited on a #18 caddis WHIPPIN ZIPPER - technique to remove said grasshopper when the warden approaches COLORFUL FISH - referring to pigmentation, or to the language used when the big one gets away (#$%@** FISH!!!)
  2. When all else in life is lousy, there are always trout in Taneycomo.
  3. Sure you can use those sissy rods if you want to catch sissy fish. For REAL trout though, the only jigging pole is a 65' crane.
  4. Hey y'all I have some friends from KC coming down sometime this spring. We're going to hit Taney one day, and I was thinking lil sac the other. So question is, (so I can get planning and they can get time off) when would be the best time to hit the little sac for walleye and whites this spring. I know the spawn is usually early March to late April, but are some times better than other? If you had to choose one day, what part of which month would you pick? Also, I've seen people last year start at 215 bridge and walk up round the edge of the field to get upstream. I reckon this is private property, so do you know if the land owner minds people walking upriver w/out a boat? I saw many people doing it, so I think it's alright, but better to check. Is this a good plan? or would it be better to walk up from the big iron bridge? Lastly, what is the limit on whites and walleye? Thanks Brian
  5. Hey - would you happen to have any tips for access to walleye from the bank - or is the water still too high for such wishfulness? Appreciate all the reports!
  6. 6 of which species - a mixed bag?
  7. OK - that's a mildly impressive trout. But I caught a 15 inch rainbow the other day... grin
  8. I've been having success on two colors of marabou jigs - I use white, but I tie it with red thread, and leave some of the red thread strands out, so they flow the length of the jig (bleeding), and a brown/green/white belly jig. They've had success for trout, as well as smallmouth. No float - just sensitive fingers.
  9. I've noticed they are appearing in less frequency. If we get another opening of the flood gates though, I'd expect more.
  10. I've been fishing right at the wire for the past 3 trips in the last week or so, and if you get there early, there are smallmouth. I've caught roughly 20 in the past 3 trips, the biggest at 18 inches, w/ a super fat belly. Yesterday, caught 6 species of fish on upper taney! - 5 smallmouth, 1 kentucky, countless rainbows (well, probably around 10 or so), a brown, a goggleye, and 3 bluegill. Talk about a mixed bag - lots of fun. Right at the top wire, there is a super deep ledge where the smallmouth have been schooling, though the action isn't as hot as it once was. I've been using a white marabou jig with red thread tied into it, and a jig of brown/green/white marabou (the only colors i have). They've worked for all species. I've got to tell y'all - I've had two fish on that were so big, I thought I hooked the bottom! As I was trying to pull my jig free, I felt the "bottom" turn its head a few times, and said jig popped out. Talk about getting chills! Down from the wire before the outlet I've caught a smallmouth as well. The trick is to find the still area on the edge of the current, and let it get deep. I've already posted this pic, but this is the 18 incher. Happy fishing!
  11. I'll agree with that - at taneycomo I'll always give out flies - until I run out that is. Of course, that's the beauty of tying your own - you can give out a lot of flies and not be out much but some time. A gent give me a fly at RR once as well - I was grateful, even though I couldn't catch a cold with it
  12. Along the thread of waders looking for a new home - I left my waders in the garage one winter and didn't use them - when I finally went to put them on, a family of mice had made a new home there. One mama and 5 pinkies. Needless to say that my right boot went through extensive cleaning before next use. So the moral is, don't go long without wading. Here's hoping for "hello - the following is a computer generated message. The number of units generating at the table rock power plant is... zero."
  13. Awe gimme a break. Sorry to see the docks like that. My thoughts to owners and boat owners.
  14. Wow! - She could give me some pointers!
  15. thanks murdoc - just out of curiosity - is it "frowned upon" by the more "serious" fishermen to using spinning gear in the fly area? I know some fishermen have certain standards (like only using flies with a fly rod). Do folks at RR have similar convictions? I'm just curious about the other forum members - as for me, I see nothing wrong with using spinning gear/flies. Any purists fishing RR?
  16. is that the requirement for the fly area - a lure with some kind of feather on it? - Would a tiny crankbait with a dressed tail work as well? - Also (always wondered) do you have to use a fly rod in the zone?
  17. How about flies only? - and nothing larger than a size #10
  18. I guess by artificial you would have to include catfish baits... - hmmm... how would you go about setting bait restrictions - or would you?
  19. It would be easy to put restrictions - say for example, only artificial bait, and no unattended fishing lines - with heavy fines. Trouble is enforcing it. I can see Joe Somebody sneaking down at night... Also - and this bugs me about lakes in general - clear posted rules about littering - and a flat $500 fine for doing so. Like you say - it would be doable.
  20. Well Trav, the channels aren't taking off. I would suggest people check out a link on the upper taney poll showing the Red River Channels. For the record, I'd support all three, in varying amounts. Not many smallmouth, a few more walleye, but mostly channels.
  21. That is wicked! - I've attached a regular reel to my 9 ft. fly rod and caught catfish, and it was a blast. Maybe y'all have something here. That first bloke looked like he was using a Roman Rooster too!
  22. Thank heavens - catch and release is important in sustaining a fishery like Roaring River! - just jokin -
  23. I'm trying to imagine my new catfish flybox! I'm thinking some 10 inch long feathers lashed to a hook, and soaked in garlic would do the trick. Call it the #1/2 Roman Rooster!
  24. Let me tell y'all about my first day on taney this year yesterday. 12 rainbows, biggest 17 inches, 9 smallies, biggest 18 inches, a goggleye, two bluegill, and NO CATFISH! Just joking - actually, the more I hear you guys talk about channels, the better it is sounding (hating to admit it). I've never thought of those bottom suckers as sportfish before. Guess it stems from growing up around kansas farm ponds where you could catch a 30 inch cat easily for the fun of it (the same i'm sure could be said for largemouths). Moving to Missouri, trout and smallmouth fishing was utopia. It's just hard to imagine going to taney, catching a 12 inch bow, chopping him in half, skewering him with a size 2 hook, chunking said hook along with 1/2 lb sinker and 50 lb test into the river and waiting for a 15 lb catfish while sipping a [insert favorite beverage]. This just doesnt seem like the destiny for taneycomo, and doesn't seem like the dream for the tourist visiting it. That being said, I don't think channels would affect the trout/smallmouth fishery. So, if y'all are preparing a petition for MDC, I'll sign it.
  25. I knew a fellow in Kansas who had about a 6 acre lake crowded with small bluegill. He stocked a few wiper and they cleaned them out. I think wiper would eat anything they are given when they are hungry. (florida strain largemouths eat trout now, when they have to - not just shiners/gills they evolved eating). I would still rather catch a put-and-take wiper than a catfish - course, I grew up catching channels. Just my opinion.
