  1. Appreciate the sympathy very much. It is a loss, but he was a good man, and lived a long life. All things considered, it was the best way to go. Hey Sam! Sounds like you did have some fun, even with the heat! It's fun trout fishing when the rivers are up - I agree! Heidi and I've been out with Bill and Donna on their boat a few times at Taney - good times! Well, the agent we fished with knew exactly what would be hatching, and when to fish every fly, - down to the time of day. He did pretty well too. He had a friend of mine tie on a gray dunn later (around a #22 or so), and my friend caught about as many as I did late tuesday. He also had a pretty funny posession limit story. He said they had been watching a fellow who would catch 4 in the am and clean, and come later in the pm and catch 4 more. After a few days of this, they busted him - he and a few buddies had 90 or so trout in the freezer! They asked them how much money they had. They said $600 dollars. They asked them how much they needed to get home (Oklahoma). They said around $80. MDC took the rest as the fine. He said the fellow was real honest and agreeable with them - even though he was blatantly breaking the law. All in all, a hectic past week, but it ended with a feeling of comfort, and that is something. I'll have to come back down to RR sometime when I get time - I think there are still a few in the C&R section without sore lips. I've come to the conclusion that fishing is one of the best things you can do for yourself.
  2. Well, the good and the bad, i suppose. Good news is we slayed em (naturally ) And no worries - we had an agent fishing with us for a while, so we abode by the rules - I just kept 4 for Wife and I to fry. Purdy hot. Monday night Gpa died - so that put a damper. He lived in N. Kansas, and folks said to stay away while all the plans were being made, so we stayed and fished Tuesday and Wednesday, but heart wasn't in it. I caught just one fish tuesday (I assure you due to lack of ambition, not skill ) untill a little before the buzzer, when a fly rod and a #20 gnat soothed my spirits and fooled 15 or so trout. Packed up Wednesday noon, went home, and went up to Kansas Thursday. It was good to see friends again. Gpa was a good man - and he got all three of his wishes - he died quick, never lived in a nursing home (he was 92, with an 80 yr old wife - marry em young, guys!), and never lost his mind. Best way to do it in my opinion. He had a dandy pond on his farm in which my wife caught a 4 lb bass right after we were married. Good memories - he had a cow if we threw a fish back - "you eat what you catch".
  3. It was good to meet everyone at the clean-up. Oh wait... maybe it was just me that was there... guess it's easier to complain about trash than pick it up. Got lots of line, glass, and after a while stopped picking up the cigarette butts - losing battle. Only kept at it for 30 min or so. At least the fishing was good. Here's some advice - when the sun comes up and the scud bite dies, throw tiny black ants (around #20 or #22). I caught probably 15 on dries today, including a brown, and four rainbows that were easily over 18". Good day. Big trout like tiny black flies. And dries are a lot more fun! At least today they were.
  4. No need too get to beant out of shap - some peopel uses good puntuashun an d some' dont make it to be able to read.
  5. I'll do my best on the pictures - I may have to use the landscape panorama mode on my camera to take pictures of the trout we'll be catchin though!! WHOOEEE! Oh yeah - Weather will be partly cloudy, 74, with a southwest breeze of 5 mph. WHOOEEE!!
  6. WHOOOEEE - I'm putting out an advanced warning to Roaring River trout - it's time for the annual trip, and this year, we will show no mercy. I'm puttin these trout on notice - the smack-down will start next Monday, and will continue mercilessly until wednesday. Mercilessly..... without mercy! My buddies from KC and I have gotten the latest Berkley Gulp Alive Super-Duper Almost-Cheetin' Jaw-Droppin' Power POWER Eggs - and we aren't afraid to use them!!! And zone 2, it is my purpose to leave NO FISH without sore jaw after one wade through. That's right... just one! If you fish know what's good for you, you'll just swim up to the bank in defeat, cause we're comin' with soundness of mind, and purity of heart. Be warned! Seriously... please let us limit out....
  7. Nice - ive really gotten in to em down in zone two- fun fun fishing. pretty fish!
  8. Amp - you were taking walleye at fellows? I've heard they're in there, but never seen one caught. Was the bite consistant at all?
  9. Good luck.
  10. Skipped some awesome Taneycomo trout fishing to jetski!!?? Are you sure you're on the right forum? Shoulda been at taney - i went friday and took 15 or so - including a big rainbow and a decent brown.
  11. Sometimes with one unit on, you can run into these vertical objects scattered in the lake. They make loud yelping noises if you run them over, and can mess up your prop. Some of them may even be forum users. Try to avoid them
  12. Nice fish! I waded from about 10 to 1. Caught about 15 or so. Nothing too special - an 18 inch rainbow below the rebar hole and a 15 inch brown at outlet one were the highlights. Besides those two fish, all were caught below the island across from outlet one. Brown san juan worm for all. Very few things are more enjoyable than to be up to your waist in water with a trout on. Even if it does slosh into your waders when those boaters come zipping past - jk sunny day.
  13. There's always a midge hatch at Taneycomo - when the water's down especially, using emergers can be effective. Small. (size 18 and up). The best way I've found to consistantly 'match the hatch' at Taney is by using scuds. Net a couple of rocks on the bottom and you'll see scuds crawling all over them. While people use all different colors, I typically use brown or gray. Use small scuds if the water is low (size 18-22) and larger (size 12-16) for high fast water. Getting your scud to sink in fast water is always a challange - use enough weight and a larger indicator. Also, in fast water, I've caught almost all of my biggest trout (and all my biggest brown trout) on san juan worms. I've found light and dark brown to work well, but some folks use red and bright colors. In my opinion the most fun you can have at Taneycomo is wading the trophy area in the summer afternoon using drys. Griffeth gnats and ants, as well as small caddis patterns have worked for me. I generally am not bright enough to find the right fly, and if I can ID an insect, probably don't have the exact fly to match it in my box anyway. To make up for it, I downsize greatly. You'll see a ton of hits on a dark dry fly of any kind if it's size 22 or 24. Upsize if they are running water. I've switched to dries when everyone on the lake can't get a hit on a scud, and have caught fish. People have luck with wolley buggers, but I've never learned to fish them properly. Hope this helps. I'm a novice and there are many more qualified people on this forum to answer your question, but I've found these tips work. And no, no tarpon flag or scale. so sad.
  14. Match the hatch! If they're eating fish guts, throw a fish gut fly! At the trout parks, I throw a little brown pellet cut from the foam of a flip-flop sandal. However, you'll only find the fish-gut eaters around the fish cleaning stations. I bet they are tasty though! - that fish looked fat! I'm still waiting for Lilley to take down his "no fishing in or behind the dock" sign...I'll be eating good that night!! Speaking of not very sporting!... Wife and I went to florida off the coast of Daytona fishing for sharks and tarpon (caught a 150lb tarpon, and several sharks longer than my wife:D) However, this "world class guide" merely took us out behind a shrimp trawler, netted a discarded fish, and had us chuck it in the boats wake! It was fun hooking up, but seemed a little unsporting. Of course, when a tarpon bigger than my wife is jumping 3 foot into the air, you tend to throw "sporting" to the wind. Not knocking the guide - he put us on fish... but still... It was fun though - we saw dolphins about 3 feet from our boat, eating the discarded fish. I asked the guide if he'd ever accidentally hooked one. He said "once" and didn't talk about it. The funny part is, he let the tarpon off next to the boat w/out pictures! And when my wife asked (and she didn't know any better) if tarpon were good to eat (even though we weren't planning on keeping it), he looked at her like she was nuts and informed us that tarpon were protected, and a very prestigious sport fish. He seemed to think we were real missouri hillbillies, but I wanted to say..."Uh.. we just caught this protected prestigious sport fish behind a shrimp boat using a dead fish, and you're judging us because we asked if tarpon was good to eat?!!" Anyway, got off topic. sorry bout that.
  15. I'm in! If I'm gonna start a topic on the evils of cigarette butt trash, I'd better be at clean-up day. June 13th, 10 am.
  16. The likely culprits are out of towners, who probably think that purchasing the fishing license and trout stamp ought to be good enough. I can understand - if you are coming for a family trip and only fish for a few hours at trophy area while the wife is shopping at Appletree Mall, you just paid a lot of $. If it was me and I paid up to MDC, I'd want to go to the area where I'm most likely to catch fish in #s and size (trophy area) and use whatever means to catch them (if they were to be released anyway). Still doesn't make it right. Bill's approach is the best. If we as citizens can't help enforce our own laws, no matter how small and silly, we may as well go in for total anarchy! Next thing you know, people will be keeping brown trout and committing arson. I would suggest a sign that says something to the effect of "Soft plastic baits do not work in Trophy Area - trout have been educated by SoH Fish Hatchery"
  17. Sixstring - were these white bass? If so, I wish I could get into them like that - only occationally do I seem to stumble across 'em. Where were you at? (If they were tasty black bass, lookout!! ) And advice if you are buying a boat. I don't have one, but I've been learning trailer backing using a friends boat. It takes a bit to get right - so if you're new to it, learn on a low-traffic boat ramp first!!! (that's what I've been doing) You'll get less guffaws and dirty looks, and have thick shiny hair if you do.
  18. Forgot to add - if water is low, and you don't want to purchase a $95 pair of waders, it is HUGELY worth it to go to walmart and pick up a pair of boots that go up to your knees or so. They're like $15 or something, and help you get a little out from the shore. I would highly recommend it- I use my pair for more than just fishing - they're good all-purpose boots. (They're also a considerable sight easier to put on and take off than waders)
  19. It depends a lot on the amount of generation. If no generation, you can access good fishing w/out waders - around the hatchery outlets, and can get at some fast moving water further down on dry land (wear tennis shoes that can get a tad wet). San juans are good - I've never had a lot of success on the glo-ball eggs (but I'm a lousy fisherman of course). In August, you can have A LOTof fun with dries as well. I prefer black ants and griffeth gnats - the smaller the better (up to size 22 or 24). You'll have a lot of strikes, and even hook a few! However, if I was stuck on Taneycomo with one kind of fly, it would be a gray or brown scud. If there is water running, use larger sizes - up to size 14 or so. If there is no water running, using small scuds (or sowbugs - same diff really) up to size 20 or 22 or so will fool a lot of trout. And also, if you are out on a gravel bar in low water and you hear a horn... head for high ground (especially with no waders ) Hope this helps. I'm hardly the most qualified on this forum to give advise - but I've found small black dries and scuds to be useful in Taney.
  20. You never know - they may drop it down to 2 units. "swine flu" after all Bring an anchor, but dont plan to use it.
  21. Had an absolute blast in zone 2 and 1 - I was picking up a hit on every drift in 2 (it seemed like). If I could'a set the hook on all of em, It would've been a 150+ day! Whooo!! Using glo-balls under a float about 3-4 feet. (that's what made the hook set hard) Don't be afraid of the quick water - the trout are there in #s! It's the most fun I've ever had in RR, fishingwise. In zone one, cracklebacks were working, and picked up a few on a large black ant. There wasn't another fisherman I could see in zone two, and when they're hitting that good, it's fun as all get out. I much prefer this high water, even though you have to use a high visibility fly. I think the glo-ball moves kinda slow in the current (comparably), so that helps once it's sunk. Yahoo - I'm ready for our annual trip w/ a bunch of friends from KC next month!
  22. My sentiments exactly! How is this for an idea to raise a massive amount of revenue for MDC? For two or three days, all agents would be assigned litter patrol. Anyone seen littering would recieve a $50 fine. Imagine the INCREDIBLE amount of revenue the four Missouri trout parks would generate! This money could be used to fund the already steller missouri conservation efforts. It would be perfectly within the law, raise a ton of money, and punish people who throw down their waste with no regard to others or the environment. Cleaner streams/lakes, and more MDC $$. Do you think something like that would fly (particularly at the trout parks - though Taney would generate some $$ with agents in the bushes w/ binoculars can you hear Ray Stevens "It's Dudly Dooright of the Litter Patrol...")? I'm heading down to RR tomorrow for the fun of it. Do some wading in the thunderstorm in the fly section. I gotta fever - and a river runs through it!
  23. And Patrick McManus once said to cast as though you were a little old lady trying to fend off a bat with a broom. Not many things more relaxing than fly fishing though. I love it - got started on bluegill and bass up in kansas, and was pleased to learn that you could catch trout on flies too, after moving down here. I would suggest taking up tying as well - if you plan on flyfishing for any considerable amount of time. A fellow loses enough flies to make a fly tying kit worth it. If trout got 'hooked' on the cigarette fly, would it be banned to try to help underage trout? Would you have to pay some crazy "cigarette fly" tax?
  24. If it weren't for those holligan car salesmen, we would never know what car we couldn't do without! And if it weren't for those helpful gents at the local fly shop, we would never know that the scuds we tied were no good, and we needed their special variety - jk And if it weren't for people like me belly-achin', happiness would spread like swine flu!
  25. A scud on Taney is like Kirby VanBirch in Branson, always seems to do the trick. Scuds are my go-to - small (down to #22) when water is low, and large (up to #12) when water is high. Brown or Gray - match the hatch. And I agree with the other posts - the plastic trash is just as bad if not worse. Smoking a cigarette and throwing down the butt is no different than opening a package of plastic worms and throwing out the wrapper, or drinking a coke/beer and throwing the can. All of these things peeve me. That's like a trout attacking a clump of moss with scuds in it, and tossing the moss into your living room. Except it's completely absurd. We'd be like.."trout - what are you doing dude?" and he'd be like "I'm a trout - do I have to have a reason?" and we'd be like "......well....guess not.....". I need to go find a good use of my time right about now...
