Live Sunfish For Largemouth
shaker replied to ozark trout fisher's topic in General Angling Discussion
Years ago, early 60's, I would catch blue gills and perch and use them on trot lines and limb lines while on family vacations, usually stayed at Viney Creek. I don't remember catching any bass on the trot lines but more often than not if you had a fish on the limb line it would be a bass. Never over 3 to 4 #'s but they eat just as good as everything else we caught. -
10' Sam Heaton Super Sensitive, light and very sensitive. Not suppose to lift fish with it though, I did break one tip once my own fault, they were happy to sell me a new one.

Looks kinda of lonely around this Truman site. I don't fish there much except for the late winter and early spring action but the Corps hasn't been running much water so probably not much happening.

What To Use For Larger Smallies In Missouri Streams?
shaker replied to Dan052's topic in General Angling Discussion
All great advice my best bait ever was a 1/8 oz black buzz bait with a 101 Uncle Josh pork frog. Next was a lure long gone, and have never seen another like it, but anyway it was a Cordel Big O in what looked like a baby bass pattern. It was about 2" long and a deep diver, I didn't even buy it but received it in a tackle pack for a subscription in one of the fishing rags. All the river bass loved it, brownnies, KT's and even LMB's. -
We caught most of these fish on top of the weir in front of the power house. When we got there in the middle of the afternoon the fish were holding down maybe 3 to 5 ft. from the top of the water but later you had to bump the rocks down about 15' to get hit, don't make sense should be the other way around but thats hybrid fishing. I would think that would be hard to fly fish and there is a lot of other boats around too. After thinking about it that might be a great idea, when somebody starts crowding you a little get out the fly rod and start whipping it around, that'll back em off a little!

Went to the dam area yesterday afternoon fished to about 8:00 PM caught 40 to 50 hybrids with a few whites mixed in, mostly on small swim baits and swimming minnows. Had few over 18" but most were 12" to 16" fun anyway!

I've been watching the thread on what color and kind of braid with interest. I'm planning a trip to Beaver next spring to mainly top water fish for stripers, which is best mono, braid, hybrid? I fish Truman a lot for hybrids and just about quit using braid unless I'm trolling, seems to me that when casting to fish that mono has a lot less fish get off than braid. I've tried a lot of different lines and have settled on Power Pro for a braid and Berkly Big Game for mono, 12 to 17# how much line do you need on a reel?

Thanks for the report, been wanting to go but dang! it's HOT. Were the whites on top or did you find them deeper?

Upper ends still muddy, 1/2 way down stained but very fishable, lower ends somewhat clear depends on the arm Tebo and the Pomme arms being more clear than the rest. Don't know about bass but crappie are somewhat slow but can be caught mostly on minnows.

Doop you didn't say when you were headed for Truman but we have had some major rains in the area the lake has come up 4' in the last two days with predicted another 5' more by Friday. Thats going to make fishing mighty tough, let us know when you're headed that way and I'll try to help as much as possible.

What Is Your Favorite Pond Lure
shaker replied to OzarkFishman's topic in General Angling Discussion
Gold blade, brown body and tail Vibric roostertail, catch any thing that swims in a pond, carp, catfish, turtles, mudpuppy's and all the good stuff too! -
Be my guess it was a black snake! If you go back head farther up the lake and look for main lake flats with trees, most of the crappie are headed for the summer time pattern and probably have moved out of the coves. There will always be some in the larger creeks with deep water and lots of cover, but they are scattered right now and slow trolling with jigs or minnows is probably your best bet. 1/16 abd 1/8 oz jig heads in hot pink with a black and chartuese tail and a blue with chartuese have been working well for me. They well probably be 6 to 12 ft. down in 15 to 25 feet of water, sometimes on hardwoods, sometimes hedge sometimes cedar every day is different thats what makes it fun! If you head back feel free to contact me and I'll try to help as much as possible.

Finally was able to get away for Friday afternoon and picked up a limit of hybrids biggest was 6.5# caught em on casting spoons and swim baits on points on the lower Grand arm. They did blow up on top a few times but didn't stay up long, seemed to be really scattered but was fun trip anyway.
-
I would recomend to get a good lake map and look at the Bucksaw area, fish are somewhat scattered in the hardwoods, hedge and cedars, down 8 to 12 ft. in 15 to 25 fow, any jig with chartuese will work or maybe minnows. There is a good marina there that will help put you on fish and you won't have to run very far to find fish. Good luck!

Thanks for the help, we're going to get some pictures and post them like you said, neither of us know much about cameras but will give it a shot.

I have a friend that was given a bambo rod in a aluminum tube with S. Harris, Aspen Co. written on it. The top row of lettering on the rod is hard to make out but it looks like Harris Imperial at, next row down says "Battenkill, next row down 7' 3 3/8 oz next row the letters ga. D.G. (6). There is a number on the rod 48943 and two tips one has the same number and the other has 37519. The rod shows very little use and is in very good shape other than the top row of lettering, is this rod worth anything or where would you go to check it out. He lives in the Kansas City area. Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Anybody fishing for them on the lake? Looks like with the current and warming temps. they should be getting fired up, going to give them a shot about Tuesday or Wednesday.

Thats a good question I'll try to explain what I have learned on Truman in the last few years and maybe someone with more experience and knowledge will speak up and help out. I treat the high water lake just like a giant river, there are aeas of high current flow that you can see at times mostly around points and flats, this is beside the obvious areas of trash and mud lines floating down the lake. Whereever there is high current flow there will be eddies, these won't be as obvious as in a river but they are there just the same you'll have to look for them. I crappie fish a lot and have noticed even under high generation current flow that a 1/16 jig as it's dropped down will swing out to the current flow. I always look around stick-ups and trees for tell tale signs of current, there will be little curly whirls in the water following the current. One thing that I saw this spring that I don't think I have ever seen before as I was chasing some spawning crappie up in a feeder creek maybe a 1/2 mile from the lake. The fish suddenly turned off, I was looking around and saw those current swirls on the wrong side of the stick-ups, the lake was raising so fast that it was pushing some serious water back into the creeks. There was some heavy rains the night before and the lake came about 18" that day while I was on the water, the catfish might have went crazy but the crappie went south or somewhere. Hope this helps a little and maybe someone else will speak up with their own experiences. Good Luck!

I saw this post yesterday and have been thinking about those fish, I'm just curious are these post spawn fish or are they still moving up to spawn, what was the water temp? As crazy as this spring has been anything could be happening but I would have to think that the spawn would be long over. Appreciate any thoughts about what is going on.

I like to remove the red meat, cut filet into finger sized pieces, mix some Franks hot wing sauce, mustard, and green Tabasco sauce together pour over the fish pieces and marinade for several hours, then roll in favorite dry mix and cook. I think one thing that a lot of people do wrong with white bass is to cook it like crappie, much too fast. these fish can be cooked for a much longer time, this helps to burn off some of the oily taste that a lot of people find offensive. I've found that Franks, mustard and green tobasco really seem to eliminate the oily taste and does seem to remind one of the hotwing flavor. Enjoy!

Fished the grand arm 3 times this week and the fishing is about as good as it can get, ususally limit out in 2 to 3 hours no fish under 10'' I don't believe that all of the fish have spawned yet, but with the water rising everyday the fish have locked down on the old bank ready to spawn. Been throwing 1/16 oz. jigs with black and chartreuse 2" tubes, up toward the bank and slowly swimming it back to the boat trying to bump the bottom now and then out to 8 to 12 ft. of water. The fish seem to be somewhat scattered once in a while you'll pick up a couple in one spot, just keep moving and fish slow, slow and slower. Anything with chartreuse has been working, most of these fish have been 1/2 to 3/4 of the way back in the major creek arms off the main river channel. This pattern should work for a while until the water gets too high and muddy, just when that will happen is anybody's guess but I look forward to having good fishing until the early part of next week. Good luck and good fishing!

Kramer the spawn hasn't really started yet, mostly males on the bank. It's anybody's guess on what the lake is going to do with all the rain that has fallen. If it comes up real fast sometimes that will shut the bite off for a while, but there will be fish for you to catch when you get there it just may be a little slow going. I use jigs with a crappie nibble, road runner with black and chartreuse tube, red and chart. white and chart. blue and chart. about anything with chartreuse will work. I do like hot pink or sometimes flame orange jig heads when its very muddy with a black and pink tube just use a 2" tube or larger. I pitch jigs at the bank a lot and use a 10' rod to vertical jig around heavy cover, brush and trees. Sometimes a jig under a bobber or slip bobber works well too. Keep in touch I'll try to help as much as I can. Good luck!

redbird gave you a good report sterettcreek is about the only reliable fishing report on Truman. There should be some crappie still on the banks by the time you get there, but I'm sure that the main spawn will be pretty much done if the weather stays decent. They don't all spawn at the same time and the weather guesser is saying that some major rains are on the way, hope that they are wrong again! I'm planning on fishing most of the week at Truman if you like pm me before you head down and maybe I can help a little with the crappie bite!

Thanks for the report glad to hear somebody is doing some good!
