  1. Are you seeing them fishing mainly on windblown points? If that is the case they are fishing for whitebass. In the fall the whitebass will stack up on the windy points and banks in 1-2 feet of water and become very aggressive. Their favorite food is shad so predominant colors to fish with are white, red, silver, grey, blue. They can provide a lot of topwater action when they are in the mood. The buzzbait allows you to cover a lot of water searching for an aggressive school of whites. Thats my guess. Sometimes they feed in such a frenzy that the activity will attract more than one boat. I run into a couple of boats on Truman that dont have the same ethic that I do to give a fellow fisherman his room to fish. I think it is also just a sign of the times (and not one I am particularly fond of). I usually just pull up the trolling motor and find another point.
  2. Chilling is the right way to describe that!
  3. Nice lagemouth Buzz, Im jealous.
  4. Good for you, how deep were you fishing? Think they would have hit a clouser?
  5. Hey Tim, I am trying to get away for the weekend in a couple of weekends and would like to try RR. It would be our first trip there, as we usually hit Bennett. My wife's concern is there going to be any place to take the kids for a mid day cool off in the river? I know there has to be some good swimming holes down there, could you help me out and point me to one or two that might be family friendly or uncrowded. I really appreciate the help, and always appreciate your reports. Bill Cardinal
  6. darn, wish I was faster!
  7. In the summer my brother fishes a hopper dropper pattern, and catches a lot on both. They call it the twinkie and the coconut out there. Ive tied up hoppers in a few shades and sizes, lots of stimulators, lots of nymphs, adams, quills, buggers, and streamers. The anticipation is mounting!
  8. Right on brother! You absolutely get it. Im proud that there are flyfishermen like you out there!
  9. Before last July it was a Zara Spook on Pomme de Terre, the bass was 8 lbs. As of last July it is a cork bodied popper that I painted and tied myself. The bass was 25 inches and weighed 9 lbs. From a farm pond.
  10. I wish I had 11 days to spend out there. The Popo Agie and the WRC are my brothers 2 regular spots. We will hit them for sure. Thanks and good luck on your trip also! "Sometimes you eat the bear and sometimes the bear, he eats you."
  11. Anyone ever heard of the MO MO?
  12. I caught one mid summer last year that was 25 inches and went 9 pounds.
  13. Man oh man, thats beautiful.
  14. I thought that just getting out of the wife's hair would be good enough to make the time you spend worth it? Maybe you still havent been married long enough for that one to kick in.
  15. Glad to help. As far as Tournaments go, I would sleep in until they are out of the marina, or put your boat in the night before and get out before them. They take off usually between 6 and 6:30 depending on the size of the tournament. Once they are fishing the lake kind of absorbs them and there is so much area to fish it is not much problem to find spots where other anglers aren't. (unless it is a particurlarly good spot that many people know of.) Wind can be a problem especially depending on your boat. Still with care you can get to some coves where the wind wont effect your fishing where on Stockton it is so open the wind just blows and blows across it. One of the things I notice on Truman though is that no matter which direction the prevailing winds are blowing, the arms and coves of the lake which are much like rivers channel the wind which ever direction they run. So getting out of the wind can be a trick, but it is definately possible. I fish for white bass a lot in the fall and then wind is your friend, and can help you pinpoint where the fish will be, but the last couple days have been just a little too windy. And now here comes the rain. Good luck, no matter what happens I hope you catch fish and have a good time.
  16. Long Shoal has lots of great places to fish. The LMB will be in the coves. I like to look for the long deep coves with a good creek channell running through them. The bass will be on secondary points and along gravel banks and banks with good cover. In May I love to get the topwater bite going, pop r's and spooks are my fav Especially if you get some warm cloudy days. You can never go wrong with a spinner bait when learning new water, because they are versitile, and you can cover a lot of water with them. White bass will be in a transition between thier spawning run up the creeks and back out to thier summer haunts on the main lake. You may find them in creek channels or on secondary or main points. Always be on the lookout for them surfacing, but you don't get a lot of big schools of whites doing that until the summer warms up a bit. Sterrett creek updates their fishing report as often as anyone for Truman, and thogh it is not real close to Long Shoal, you can get a good feel of what is happening on the lake. They usually post on Wednesdays. Good luck and have fun! http://www.sterettcreek.com/
  17. Friday afternoon was in the high 60's here and I took 2 hours to get a little fishing in and get some fillets for our next fish fry. I was fishing my new 3 wt, and still had 6x tippet on, so I was set to have some light tackle fun. I wasnt disappointed, the first 3 fish I caught were bluegill all bigger than my hand. After 20 min just one crappie, I was fishing a clouser and with it still being early I was stripping it pretty slow. I threw a cast just as a gust of wind blew and I had to spend a couple minutes untangling. So after everything was straight I stripped in fast and was stopped solid by a nice crappie. So I threw out to the same spot and stripped fast again, another crappie! The crappie were chasing and the bluegill were hitting as it sank. I made my way down about 50 yds of shore putting crappie on my stringer as I went. I caught a few short bass too. As I was fishing I noticed mayflies coming off the water and I started seeing a splash here and there. (I only had brought my streamer box, no dry flies, darn). I was still catching a fish every other cast though so no worry. I threw the clouser parallel to the bank and stripped it fast 3 times and it stopped. I saw the boil, and hardly had time to feel the fish, but with 6x It probably never even felt a tug. It had to be one of those big bass. Well with needing to tie on a new fly I decided to go with the new Muddler I had tied and fish it on top. That would only last for a few casts, because I hadnt brought any Gink either. The first cast I was stripping it fast just as before, but on top of the water and a nice crappie came all the way out of the water and dove on top of it. I was running out of spots on the stringer and I caught one more on top. I have only seen that one other time, when bass fishing with my Dad we tied little panfish poppers I had in my box on the back of our tiny torpedos and caught crappie that were feeding on a hatch. It was at Pomme, and Dad actually had a musky take a panfish popper. Ok, now my muddler is sinking, but stripping it fast is still catching me crappie, and Ive walked too far to walk back and put them on my stringer so Im throwing them back, I only had one clip left at this point, and Im beginning to dread cleaning them all. I cast down the bank and it happens again, the huge boil, and my muddler is gone this time I felt the fish, and I dont think I wanted to fight him on a 3 weight. But he will be fun on a 5 wt later this spring. I have to tie some more of those muddlers the were fun to fish, I could definately see catching some browns on them. I ended up catching one more crappie to fill the stringer and then I left. 18. Ditto what Bill said. There are many points and shorelines that are wadeable and are easy to drive to. I started wading for whites there last fall (after my boat broke down) and a pair of hip waders were all I needed. If you find a point or flat gravel bank that the wind is blowing in on in the fall, especially if you have clouds, you will have a blast catching whites. I only hit it right for big ones once last fall, but I spent 3 days there late in the fall and my brother and I caught over 100 each day wading around Long Shoal. BTW I (am a confirmed bonehead) left my 8 wt on the bed cover of my buddy's pickup as we drove off from the swimming beach area in the state park campground. Needless to say it didnt stay on very long. When we finally realized what happened and looped back around to find it it could not be found. It wasnt a great rod or reel, but it was my first fly rod that my Dad gave me back when I was about 10, (almost 30 yrs). That's it in my avatar Anyway if someone might have found it I sure would like it back, or if someone found it and doesnt want to thats ok too, it doesnt owe me anything, just treat it right and maybe give it to another kid to cut his teeth on.
  19. Thanks for the info guys! Its great to have a place like this to get advice on this stuff.
  20. Be careful, once that trout bug gets you you might fall hard. I know I have!
  21. Thats a pretty good idea Travis! So as not to leave the bucketeers out, they could do a 50/50 fingerling to large fish ratio or something like that. Ive read the long arguments on both sides, and I am not a catch and release pureist. I just would like the laws obeyed so that it benifits all who fish.
  22. If there havent been 1200 rainbows carried out in 5gallon buckets.
  23. Im thinking about getting/asking for a float tube for my Bday, to use on area lakes/ponds. Does anyone have any advice? It seeme more and more they are being made with an open front, is this as big an advantage as it looks, especially for a, lets say portly, angler? Thanks in advance for any advice.
  24. Thanks Thom, and FFM. I think I know what part of the Wind River you are talking about on the Res. Is it Wind River Canyon? There are some huge browns there and big rainbows too. It is big fast water with huge bolders and not much backcast room. Ive fished there once before, and my brother hits it frequently. It is one of the spots we will hit. My brother lives in Lander and we are going to work our way back from Jackson Hole to Lander Hitting his/our favorite spots in between, and possibly a day or two around Lander which has some great spots as well. Hopefully we will get in some big water big fish, and high altitude streams full of cuttys and brookies. I love it either way and am really looking forward to the trip. Thanks Again, Bill
