Lake turnover only occurs when the surface water temp reaches 39 degrees. It happens when the lake is cooling down and again when it warms back up to that 39 degrees. During a mild winter it may not occur at all.

I just received the Sept/Oct edition of "International Angler". Michael Kyle, from Backcountry Outfitters, is mentioned on page 20. Troutchaser, In 2 separate posts you have really hammered "trophy hunters". I'm assuming that you mean "sight fishermen" who target big fish. A style of fishing that was developed in the trout parks about 40 years ago. You must have had a really bad experience with trophy hunters. I would like to hear about it and know if it happened at t-como or some trout park. I personally know several "sight fishermen". They are without exception some of the finest sportsmen and finest trout fishermen in the state of Missouri. Tell me more.

Thanks Dano! I was somewhat unsure of all the restrictions imposed below BSD. I would like for everyone to go to post #65, and read all the restrictions that are in effect below BSD, and feel extremely lucky that those are not in effect below TRD." AS OF YET"!!!!!!!!!! If you are a "wade fisherman" on lake taneycomo, this could severely impact the possibility of you ever catching another large fish in the trophy area. The area would be closed to all fishing at the time you would want to be fishing the most. It may not be the same dates as BSD, but I guarantee you that they would close it through the attempted spawning period. I'm not aware of many places outside the trophy area that are suitable for the wading fisherman. We should feel fortunate for what we "still have" and do everything we can to preserve it. MDC is short handed. We can help by policing our own ranks to stop those who thumb their nose at our regulations. Good fishing to all!

What are regulations for the trophy area located immediately below bull shoals dam? Seasons, limits, etc.

I found this in the "Missouri Fishing Regulation". Quote: Accepting a permit means that you agree to observe all the rules of the Wildlife Code.

Redbird, I'm using your quote as a reference because it covers most of the concerns of some possible regulation changes that have been addressed in this topic. The change most likely to happen would be the length limit. I don't think any of the others will happen. Barbless, bending barbs down, C & R, C & K, I think that should all be a personal preference thing. A person should be able to enjoy their day fishing with minimal restrictions, other than the restrictions that they impose on themselves. The "trophy area" was established to give some protection to fish that attempt to spawn, 2 months out of the year. It is not a haven for all of the large fish in Taneycomo. 10 months out of the year, most take up residence in the "non trophy area". I am primarily a C & R fisherman, but I do not agree with the "shove it down your throat" approach taken by some. You need to put personal limitations on yourself and care less about what others do or don't do. I'm out there for my enjoyment. Any improvements that we can do together as anglers is a good thing and worth a little time and effort. As far as regulation enforcement, Do like "Bman" did, take a picture, get on your cell phone. That would surely defer a few of them. Thank you!

Phil, Can I assume that you do not like "lunker hunters"? I will take no offense if the answer is "yes", just curious to your status on that issue.

In the trophy area there is a slot limit on rainbow. 12 to 20 inches must be released unharmed. Brown trout may not be creeled until they reach 20 inches. The daily creel limit is 4 fish with only one being a brown trout. The brown limits are for the entire lake. Rainbows outside of the trophy area can be any size. You just got to have faith that the major percentage of fishermen are good, law abiding sportsmen.If 99 out of 100 do the right thing, that 1 percent won't make a difference.

The issue of C & R in the trophy area was brought up about 2 weeks ago in another topic. I am definately opposed to that for one reason only. Alot of fishermen at t-como are "wade" fishermen only. No boat. Regardless if you fly fish or spin fish, wading opportunities are pretty much restricted to the trophy area. Therefore, fishermen like myself, would never have the opportunity to weigh-in a record fish. As far as I know, MDC will not accept a C & R state record. The thought of one of my fly fishing buddies,"wade fishermen", landing the next state record, is pretty exciting to me. This new limit would be all about growing huge fish.
