  1. Its been my experinace that catfish spawn after bass by a month or so. I have caught catfish in early April when there was a skim of ice on part of the water and they did have small undeveloped egg sacks. If you draw a line from St. Louis to Kansas City, generally that spawn should take place the first couple weeks of June. Futher south its a little earlier, further north it a little later. Each peice of water is a little different, and rivers are a little different than lakes. Flatheads will spawn clear up into July when the water temparaure hits the 80 degree mark, which also seems to be a peak time for water skiers. I don't know about a spawning run so much, but doesn't mean they wouldn't. There are spawing locations that are better than others for each type of fish. Find a prime spot and it wold be very possible to catch several catfish in one area. Could be you lucked on to just such a place. Only way to find out is to go back and try it again, and by all means do so.......every chance you get. Your right, they are a blast to catch and they are great fried in bacon grease and sprinkled with lemon pepper.
  2. Lilley Thank you for cleaning up my mess. As soon as I saw what I had done, I wished I had my daughter post that question. I guess it goes back to "you can make anything fool proof, but you can't make anyhting idiot proof. Any way I apologize. You have mush better things to do clean up somebody elses mess.
  3. I have a digital image of a trout I caught last fall down in tannnycomo. It a is beutiful fish in full spawn colors. What I have in mind is "blowing up" the image so that the fish is its actual length. Cropped, framed and matted, this will be my trophy mounted on the wall. This fish was 19.5 inches long, which is way bigger than I can print at home. This is a JPG file. 3072 x 2048 How would one go about getting this image professionally enlarged to that scale?
  4. If you fish Lake Viking and the Grand River, then I am guessing you live somewhere in the Galatin area. I grew up in Milan running trap lines and waging war on farm ponds. Went to NWMSU too. I have fished the 102 River, Nodaway Lake, and Lake Paho in Princeton. Never did make it to the Grand ( or a whole lot of other places) but I have driven over it 100 times. It nice to Know there is somebody from my old stopping grounds here on the forum. Great fishing in those farm ponds in North Missouri. I sure hope you manage to get on a couple of those once in a while.
  5. I have eaten spoon bill once before years ago and it was fantastic. I had caviar once too. Too salty for me. I have never had a chance to fish for spoonbill. I read once when I was kid "That a steady job was the ruin of many a good duck hunter!" In my case, you can add a lot of other things to that as well, including fishing for spoonbill. Not that I am giving up. Its still on the list.
  6. I was told once that timing of the white bass spring spawning run coinsides when the the first big bloom of dandelions comes on. I suppose its like the old saying of timing the crappie spawn with the red buds. Any truth or experiance along those lines?
  7. I have tried the spool flipping method too and havn't noticed any improvment with line twist. I use the One of my kids holding the spool while I reel in how much line I want method. I put the reel on the rod and reel it like normal. If I do end up with line twist (and I use this later on when fishing lures twist the line up as well) I set the rod on my porch, pull all the line out in a striat line and lay it in the grass. Back at the porch I put the line in between the pages of a thick book and reel the line back in. The book keeps the tension on the line and helps work the twists out as well. It works very well if you have that much outdoor space availible.
  8. The nick name Flem actaully belongs to an old and above average ugly car I go fishing and hunting in. A frend and I where driving home from fishing one evening and the car and I both started coughing at the same time. About then the A/C dumped a whole lot of very cold water on his feet under the dash board because the drain spout was plugged up. It served him right for catching the bigger fish that day.
