THey supply the fly and I won't know what it is until I get there. Last year it was a CDC dry midge. I ended up cutting the CDC off and fished it under an indicator with a small split shot.

FYI for those interested, the annual LI one-fly is tomorrow. I am planning to go. Saturday January 7th the Northeastern Oklahoma Fly Fishers (Tahlequah) are hosting their annual One Fly contest. Registration starts at 8:00 am in the parking lot below Ten Killer dam. Contest starts at 9:00 with prizes for first fish, biggest fish and most fish. Entry fee includes a GREAT chili lunch by the Native Women Fly Fishers. Additional flies may be purchased, but you only get ONE lunch. LOL! Visit OkieFlyFishers.org for more information.

I would probably tie in a 14 as a searching pattern. I used to be really bad at tying parachutes when I tried to tie of the hackle and finish the fly on the hook shaft. There was a flytying show on PBS I think a couple of years ago and saw them tying off the hackle on the post and whip finishing to the post as well. My parachutes turn out much better with this method. It is really hard to finish off on the shaft without tying down a bunch of the hackle in the process.

Tie down to the post gives a much cleaner looking fly.

dgames replied to dgames's topic in Upper and Lower Illinois River (OK)
I hope you guys can make it. THere is also an outing to Roaring River Jan 21st. I will probably try to make that as well. -
Are any of the posters on the LI page members of the TulsaFlyfishers? Are any planning on being at the next meeting - Jan 12? Here is a link to TFF's website with meeting info http://tulsaflyfishers.org/Meeting_Calendar.html I would love to get a chance to meet some of the other posters here.

They had some really good deals. I am really curious to try out the airflo flyline I bought for $22. Looks like they normally run about $70-80.

That is exactly what we saw on Friday. Worked for an hour and a half or so and had about 5 fish and then found a really good hole and caught 20-30 out that one spot. My friend who was downstream from me found the same thing that there was a sweet spot in the hole he was fishing and once he got into that spot, he did really well.

I went yesterday. It was very crowded. Counted 20+ cars at the gravel lot below the dam when we got there. Actually started out pretty slow. Worked my way up the back side of the island. Got to one spot and then started hammering em for a couple hours. I was catching them with my usual stimulator dry fly dropper rig with everything caught on the dropper. Most of my fish were on a size 12 bh brownish/olive wooly bugger looking thing. My friend did really well on a bh midge.

Ok, now I am really mad, you just cost me some money. Bought a fly line, airflo poly leader, flouro tippet and some hooks.

Glad you did well.

Got hits on most casts for probably an hour or more.

I went today and got about 3 hours in. Fishing was pretty ridiculous. I have been doing well drifting a small bead head brown wooly bugger looking thing. I started off with midges fished on a short dropper, but that wasn't getting much. As soon as I changed to the bugger thing with a little deeper drift, it was hits on most casts for quite a while.

Release Schedule Says "20" All Day Sunday
dgames replied to bstarbird's topic in Upper and Lower Illinois River (OK)
I think you would be pretty much limited to fishing edges. You won't be able to wade across. -
Surprised to see the stonefly nymphs. Where did you find them?

More of a green color but visibility was still probably less than a foot. -
Any Reports From The Weekend?
dgames replied to DaddyO's topic in Upper and Lower Illinois River (OK)
Reportedly, they stocked last Wed & Fri. I fished hard on Thursday. Fished a couple of hours at Watts and my buddy and I didn't catch anything. Moved up to the gravel lot below the dam and fished around there the rest of the day. I did manage to catch a dozen or so, but had to work really hard to do it. Fishing was much slower than what I usually see down there. The fish I caught were on a small brownish wooly bugger fished dead drift below an indicator. I would guess it is a little better now after the second stocking on Friday. -

New Info Regarding The Lower Illinois

Thanks for posting this. -
Seeing some of the previous topics on various nymph fishing techniques got me to thinking about streamer fishing. I have read a lot of material, fished with several guides and have spent a number of years on the water working on nymph fishing. In comparison, I have done very little streamer fishing. While I have caught fish stripping wooly buggers and a few other streamers, I don't consider this one of my strengths. Say you are approaching a large wide riffle area with some deeper pocket and you want to cover that water with a streamer. What is your approach? The type of water I am thinking of is like what you would see around rim shoals on the white or pointe royale area at Taneycomo. Here is my approach. I don't own a sinking line, so for starters, I am making do with a floating line. Assuming I am throwing a wooly bugger, I tie mine with some weight on it and in addition, I would add a split shot 12 inches or so from the bugger. I would normally be using tippet 5x or heavier, depending on the size of my streamer and how heavy the water flow is. My approach to a large riffle area would be to keep moving. My experience is that if I am going to get a hit on a wooly bugger, it is probably going to be the first cast into a particular spot. I cast generally across stream. If the fish holding spot I am targeting is deep, I might quarter upstream a little to let the fly sink for a few feet before I start any kind of retrieve. Mending in particular is where I am curious what others do. I tend to try to throw a downstream mend so that when I start a retrieve, I am presenting the fly broadside to any fish that is facing upstream, I then let the fly swing across the current while vibrating the rod tip a little to give some action. I let it swing until the fly is directly below me and will often let it hang there for a few seconds and then strip it in a little. After a couple of casts to a particular spot, I will step downsteam 5 feet or so and do it again so that I am now hitting new water. Doing this, I can cover water pretty quickly. I generally have some success doing this approach, but I am really interested to hear what others do that fish streamer a lot.

Summary Of Fish Shocking Results
dgames replied to Justin Spencer's topic in North Fork of the White River
I am surprised there are 4 times as many bows in the BR vs RR area. While it has been a year since I have been down there, I always seem to catch rainbows along with the browns below patrick, particularly the big hole below the island that is about a 1/3 mile downstream from Riverside. So, is it below Patric where you see the dramatic drop in Bows or do you start to see a drop below Blair? I am guessing below Patrick because your stretch and the islands above Patrick always seem full of bows to me. -
Anyone Seen The River Lately?
dgames replied to JCWolfe's topic in Upper and Lower Illinois River (OK)
That should be pretty cool. The first time I fished the LMF, it started with a half day guide trip with Rob Woodruff, he is the guy that teaches the entomology class. His website says he has an Entomology degree from aTm. I miss have the Lower Ill available just a little over an hour away where I can go for just a part day. I don't know where my next fishing will b, maybe Roaring River once the C&R season starts. Good luck on the LMF. -
I have had a pair of the White River Fly Shop ones that were <100 and I have been fine with them. They have seen about 4 or 5 years of pretty heavy use and have kept me dry. I am getting to the point where I am thinking about replacing and would probably buy the same ones again.
