Anyone Kayak/canoe Fishing Around Kc?
Pflugradt replied to dinosaur's topic in Lodging, Camping, Kayaking and Caoneing
Hey I know this is a bit of an old topic but........ I'm in St. Joe up north of KC and do a ton of fishing in the KC area I really want to put a yak on the blue and chase the carp on fly there. Also if anyone wants to check it out there is a board on FB called midwest kayak fishermen. I'm a member of the group. Hook up with us we're always looking for new folks with a desire to get out and about. -
C&r Is Still Pretty Good At Roaring River State Park
Pflugradt replied to timsfly's topic in Roaring River State Park
I saw you down there on the 7th. I was the guy that walked a hole down from you right above dry creek, checked the water and then took off back up stream. About 15 minutes later I hooked and landed a 23.5" bow on a sculpin about 4" long. Very nice fish and had a bunch of others as well but just the one bigger fish. Was a great day to be on the water. I love the complex simplicity of it. That's a great adaptation of a classic pattern and they WILL be in my box. Steve

Razor blades. I'm all thee time cutting up stuff to save the dumbell eyes or beads. I have hooks for days so unless its something I'm short on most times I'll chuck the hook if its marred or maybe has a touch of rust starting to show. Steve

You want a real roll cast line go to a triangle taper. Best roll casting line out there.

C&r Season Roaring River State Park
Pflugradt replied to timsfly's topic in Roaring River State Park
The first link there doesn't work for my Tim (may just be me though). Question have is can you us a 2 fly rig? Like a dry and dropper? -
Throws well, I fish it (not over weeds) on my 6wt pretty often. Most often I throw it with my 8 or 9 but that's when I fish it in the weeds and I need the spine to horse big fish through the nastyness. It did well in Canada. Not many pike were caught because they we down deeper than normal but he caught a handful of smaller fish with it. Said it lasted for about 7 or 8 fish before it began to come apart. I've also gone to strictly using the beadlon wire for the joint, its a little easier to work with and honestly is really not that much more expensive. Steve

Here is my youtube video for the weedless scum frog I tie. I've come to absolutely love this fly over the last 2 seasons as my go to topwater fly no matter the situation. http://m.youtube.com/#/watch?v=k7Z0Txd26bA&desktop_uri=%2Fwatch%3Fv%3Dk7Z0Txd26bA I know its not the quality of Brians vids (wish it was). This is what I got though.... Steve

Flies The Old Timers Used
Pflugradt replied to tndulcimer's topic in Fly Tying Discussions & Entymology
Woule anyone happen to have any of the old K-poc laying around that they would be willing to part with? A friend of mine would really like to have some and tie a few of those flies (much older gentleman than myself). He said he fished them as a young boy with his father. -
Teaching My 9Yr Old To Tie.
Pflugradt replied to Pflugradt's topic in Fly Tying Discussions & Entymology
Thanks y'all. He's been working on crackle backs the last couple days. Little more complicated but hopefully today he'll tie a really nice one. -
Thanks man. I've got about 10 videos that need to go up. Just finished editing. I would really like to see a 9" articulared streamer. I know a couple big bass spots that would be perfect for them.

Brian you are very much an expert in many aspects of tying. That being said I use the hollow method for tying many different materials and use it very often with a ton of success. Take a look at my video on you tube for "Fly Tying the Hot Core Baitsifh". That's nothing more than a tail and continual hollow ties. Creats a great profile without using much material and also adding awesome color effects. The reverse style of tying I see here is perfect for what you're doing and it make a lot of sense explained that way. Thanks for the reply. Steve

Flies The Old Timers Used
Pflugradt replied to tndulcimer's topic in Fly Tying Discussions & Entymology
Yup......... tied with some weight under the chenille cast upstream and across and strip or crawl just fast enough to keep in touch with the fly, then as it swings keep the line tight enough to feel the fly but allow it to slowly pay out and rise at the end of the swing. Had fish hit it all through those different portions of a cast. Best and most agressive hits come as it rises slowly at the end of a swing but as I said they mit it all through the cast. When we were fishing it for goggles and smallies we would cast just up and acrost the current then strip, weighted or unweighted and strip short and quick. Steve -
I promised my son if we had a good year with school this year and made good progress then I would let him take the fly tying class I will be teaching here shortly. After a glowing report from parent teacher conference yesterday I figured I had better get him started. We sat down last night and he learned to attach thread to a hook, the anatomy of a hook, how to whip finish, and how to attach materials with a pinch wrap. All of this took aproximately 45 minutes after which he was begging to actually tie something. So I figured we would start easy and do some ray charles. But not too easy I want him to be challenged (he responds best when his ability is tested) so he tied his first fly ever on a #16 hook. Now granted a ray charles is not exactly like tying a jock scottt for your very first fly but on a #16 I think its pretty dang impressive. Not to mention he tied an even dozen and wouldn't leave the table until they were done. So without any further delay here are my sons very first flies 6 orange with green flash and 6 olive with orange flash ray charles. To say I'm a proud papa is an understatement. Thanks for looking guys. Steve

Commercial Leaders - Do You Use Them?
Pflugradt replied to Jack Jones's topic in General Flyfishing Topics
Haven't bought a leader in many years. I use my own furled leaders. Both the east hand twisted (big streamers, warm water) and also my jig furled leaders in all sorts of lengths and material constructions depending on the kind of fly, siruation, water clarity, depth desired.... ect. Steve -
Brian I notice that the fly is tied in a similar method to the hollow tie. Do you fiind it better to tie all the materials down as you did in this method or go with the thread dam in front of them as in a pop fleye style of hollow tie. Also please don't think I downing you at all. You have mad crazy sick skills bro and all my respect. Steve

Flies The Old Timers Used
Pflugradt replied to tndulcimer's topic in Fly Tying Discussions & Entymology
May also check out a fly called "Arlene" was basically a yellow hackle tail, black and yellow chenille body (yellow rear half black front) and then yellow hacle wrapped as a collar then a nice black or red head. One of the first my grand father taught me to tie and was a killer at Roaring, Montauk, and I filled more baskets with goggle eyes than I care to remember. -
ATTENTION : To those interested the sign up for the 2013 fly tying class has begun. The classes will be held at the North West Regional Conservation office at 701 James McCarthy Drive, Saint Joseph MO, 64507. You will need to RSVP for the class with the conservation office at (816) 271-3100 due to a limited seating availability. We will be having Basics of Fly Tying in January 2013 on every Tuesday and Thursday starting at 7pm until 9pm. That is the 8th, 10th, 15th, 17th, 22nd, 24th, 29th, and the 31st. It is all but imperative that you attend all of the classes so that you are not behind when start the following class. The Advanced Fly Tying class will follow in the month of February 2013 again from 7pm until 9pm and also on every Tuesday and Thursday. That is the 5th, 7th, 12th, 14th, 19th, 21st, 26th, and 28th. The classes are taught by Mike Perry, Megan Pflugradt, and myself. We do this with our own time and 100% free of charge because we love to share the art of fly tying with those who are ready and willing to learn. You need not bring anything to the classes except a desire to learn and your reading glasses... lol. You will be allowed to keep any and all flies you tie (unless one of the instructors decides we need more for our boxes) and take them home with you. You should expect to learn 2 tying techniques each night of the class and tie 2 flies per technique. That is somewhere in the rhealm of 30 flies for you by the end of each month. There will also be a great deal of information sharing available to you for places to get materials, tools, and also how to properly select different materials on your own and get the best bang for your buck. Again Mr. Perry, my wonderful wife Megan, and myself have devoted countless hours to the production of this class so that we can relay the best information to you in the shortest amount of time and in a manner that you can actively learn and we are always evolving our methods and circulum. Thank you and we look forward to seeing our 2013 students soon.

No need to apologize for that Tim. Family first man and my pryers are with you. I'll be putting the girls on some dries and zebra midges. I'm going to be chucking big meaty fluff, I just can't get enough when it comes to streamers. Steve

I used to use the rope flies but they are a beotch to dig out of their teeth and I hate crippling any fish especially the ones I like to target.... so I've been using just a simple straight eye 2xl #10 or #8 hook wrap the shank with your color choice of thread (red is my favorite...) tie in zonker strip at the bend leaving a very short tail (1/4 the shank length or just a touch more) then run the thread back to the eye and pull the strip over the back. tie it off, clip the excess and whip finish, I don't use any glue on these as a gar will come up behind a fly and let it touch the top of their nose if they are not really hungry and smell it to make sure it's good to eat, if you use glue they will turn off of the fly in a second and not even think about eating it.... if you put 2 or 3 whip finishes on top of one another you can forgo the glue and they can become hooked 6-7 times before they will begin to refuse the fly. Thanks for all the kinds words yall' Steve
