I have been killing myself not to push fly fishing onto my son and rather to just allow him to come to the sport when he's ready, well in the last month or so he has really taken an interest and so I have been working on his cast with him and waiting for some cooler weather to get out in. Thursday night we took some hoppers to a local lake for an hour or so and he caught his first fish that he made the cast to and hook by himself on a fly rod. Then last night I went and gigged some frogs with a friend of mine and I found a smoking hot gar spot so I decided I would take Kenny there this morning, so he caught his first three gar on a fly rod and he is in love with trash!!! After the third I could tell he was beginning to get a little tired and even though he said he really wanted to stay I said we needed to gt home to do some chores (blamed it on mom!!!) but we had a ball and I am so glad to finally have a seriously interested fishing buddy. I have heard the WD-40 but we used to always use Preparation-H. As for the regs on children having a license to trot, jug, limb or whatever I kinda like it, you don't just get an extra 30 hooks for free and a full limit as well for 3 or 4 kids in the boat, but hey if you have that many and they all are up to code then shoot yeah throw out some 120 or more hooks and get your limits if you want, you paid the fees, obeyed the laws and are entitled to take what you are legally allowed. Remember also that MO regulations say that even if an angler is under the age of 16 if they are participating (actually touching in any way other than handing an unbaited one to you and even that is a bit gray) in trot line fish, bank or limb line fishing or anchored or unanchored jug line fishing they must possess a Missouri fishing license. But also remember that if they possess a license they can also have a full daily and bag limit to add to the boat as well as another round of hooks. This is one of the reasons I buy my 8yr old a license every year, he and I can go float a section and set 60 or so limb lines and then go back and pick them and have 2 full limits, or if the wife comes as well we have three and an extra round of hooks if we find a place to put out a few extras. We have a little fly tying group up here and that's what we call the group Flies and Pies, the flies part as you know is rather self explanatory, the pies is the 5 bucks we all throw in a hat to buy some pizza.... pizza PIE!!! We originally met in my basement and drank more beer than tied flies now we meet at the conservation office and tie more flies and have more fun than anything. Steve

I like a touch of wow factor with a ton of simplicity and this one will cater to both of those. Thanks for the kind words guys. Steve

Here is a video I did with Rainbow Fly Shop in KC for some warm water stuff that I fish often. Hope yall' like it. Steve

Thanks yall' I appreciate it, if you have any other thoughts by all means let me know I don't have a problem driving a little ways if need be, maybe half an hour or so from the river... would consider a bit longer drive for the perfect place. Steve

Ok I'm gonna take some time away from the hustle and bustle for a little bit in October and I am looking for a place that i can bring the wife, business partner, his wife, and myself to get a away. We're not opposed to roughing it in the least but we want a really nice retreat and some killer fishing while we're there. I'm looking for a place that would have a cabin or lodge of some form with a minimum of 2 queens and a full kitchen and like I said before the nicer the better. I know it sounds weird but we all love to fish and have fished the elk together in the past but this time want to stay in the lap of luxury (or as close to it as we can get) and still get the fishing in. Connecting Articulated. Flies
Pflugradt replied to Jdecoudres's topic in Fly Tying Discussions & Entymology
I use the exact same stuff that Brian uses and that Jeremy recommended several years ago to me, it's called Beadlon. I use the 7 strand in .024, and .018 I have yet to have one come apart or break on me and I've put it through it's paces many a time. It also comes in a wide range of colors I have black, silver, red, pink, green, and gold. Steve -

Dude that is way to sick...... love the theme music too, though I prefer some Incubus or Linkin Park when tying big mean angry flies. Steve

HA I voted for that!!!! Definitely a cool looking concept and some interesting tying. Steve

Hey all you people out there. We have an upcoming fly tying class in St Joe. It will be every Monday and Thursday Night in June and will be 100% free (yup that's right everyone's favorite 4 letter "F" word FREE) for you. It will be held at the Northwest Regional Conservation Office 701 James McCarthy Dr. St. Joseph, MO 64507. We will be starting class at 6pm and should go to right around 8pm or shortly there after. There will be a limit of 25 seats for the class so if you are planning to attend please call the office at (816) 271-3100 to reserve your seat. There is no need to bring anything but yourself and a ready to learn attitude to the class as we will provide all of the tools, materials, hooks, and anything else you may need to tie with. If you have a vice I personally suggest you bring that so that you can become more familiar with it as the class progresses but that is not necessary. Also all of the flies you tie during the classes will be yours to keep and take home to begin filling your boxes with. We will begin with some basics of tying for those that may have little or no experience and will be touching all kinds of different techniques and flies from general trout patterns, to gill and crappie flies and even some larger streamers and bass flies. Lots of potential to learn different techniques, get a good start in tying and generally have a good time here. I really hope to see some of you there. If you have any questions please feel free to e-mail me at scubas1981@yahoo.com Steve

In no way shape or form do I ever see my tying materials or tools ever getting to the point that they will pay for themselves.... but I do get a great deal of enjoyment out of it and now that I have a wife a 7yr old and a 4yr old that are all tying with me I get even more enjoyment out of it and the cost of doing so have more then quadrupled!!!! It is a ton of fun and very relaxing when you just need to unwind and get your mind on something completely pointless. I would suggest it to anyone and everyone. Right off the bat there is no real reason to break the bank on a vise... get something decent like the Dan Vise or the Spyder from Griffin (I have owned both) and it will last you a good hand full of years and then upgrade to a the 2, 3, 4, or 5 hundred dollar vise. I now have a Dyna King Baracuda, a Renzetti Presentation 2000, and HMH Standard, (by far my favorite) and a Dyna King Squire. All great vises but not one of them is under the 200 mark new except the Squire (199)... all except the Renzetti were bought used and I love them all equally, sorta!!! Tying flies for yourself is not about saving money, don't let anyone confuse you on that fact, it's about fooling a fish into thinking that some stuff you lashed to hook might possibly be food, therefore they eat it and you catch them. Dude... I have the bass kryptonite for Happy Holler. I was bow hunting in a tree that is now in the middle of that lake when I was 13!!! Yup I went to Savannah and graduated in 2000, good times and I miss that place.

Wolf and I have been on the water all weekend with little to no success to speak of really but we have been trying some new waters we were not used to so we rack it up to the learning curve I guess. Now as to the flies we normally use here are a few of the general assortment of stuff...... and this is general, we use all different sizes weights, colors, pretty much anything we think might work at the moment. We'll tray almost anything once but usually twice or three times. I know this is my go to fly for carp and I actually tie it from an #8 up to a #2 in pretty much any color you can imagine (not just for carp) This one has proven to be rather useful to me from time to time as well. And this one works well too, just tie it in more muted colors like craw colors or olives and the like, even have it in yellow, or orange. Pretty much anything that you can get down to the bottom to them or right in front of their face will work as long as it resembles food and does not scare them. General nymph and crustacean patterns tend to be the most productive for us though. Steve

I started fly fishing when I was growing up in Savannah at age 8 and now at 28 I don't know what I would do without a fly rod in my hand. There are a few of us in the St Joe area, heck we even had a half arsed tying club kinda thingy for a couple years until I lost the time to keep it together. I'm sending a PM your way Trevor. Steve

Shoot Trevor, Wolfie and myself are both in St Joe.... you should look us up some time and we can exchange some flies. ideas, fishing stories, and all that kinda jazz. Maybe even go get a line wet together. I told you those muskies would tear you apart over there. I've had 2 hook ups on the 10wt and they come off really fast if you're not careful. Neither of mine have come to hand though. We need to get a bit more serious about that in September, I still have a hand full of the red/white, white/yellow, and white marshmallow bangers hiding here at the house for just that purpose. Steve

Check out some of these... http://www.taneycomotrout.com/howtostepsflytying/warmwaterflies.html I personally really like the gulley worm and use it often as well as a few small variations of it. Also might not hurt to have some big flashies in the box like these. All kinds of things out there that you can throw at them just give it a shot. Steve

Just so you all know I do fish for trout and have nothing against them but I really feel there are much better fish out there to catch than a fish trained to eat anything that hits the water.... just one mans opinion (although it seems it may be more than one). I also choose to fish strictly with my fly rod and only on a very rare occasion will grab terminal gear to do some river bank cat fishing and a little beer drinking. My opinion is formed like this... take a 10lb trout and an 8lb carp and tie them together tail to tail, get them to run in opposite directions and I'll guarantee that the carp will descale the trout in a matter of seconds he is running so hard and fast. The opportunities are much more abundant and much more challenging than fishing for pets. Now as for the fishing I hit a few goggles just up from the Moon Valley Access a bunch of small longears and one smallie in the 10" range all in an hour or so on Saturday evening. Thanks for the info guys I would havee had no clue where to start looking. I appreciate it. Steve

Will be in the area on Friday Saturday and Sunday and hoping to get some fishing done but will not have any mode of aquatic locomotion so hoping someone can point me to a spot close to the Bennett area that I can get on a few smallies or goggle eyes. Will have fly rod in hand just really could care less about some stinking slimy trout would much rather tangle with a fish that fights and could have possibly been born in the wild and has not been fed food pellets for the better part of it's life. So what do you know of that may help me out just a little??? Thanks in advance for the time and info yall' Steve
