well flysmallie -- that pic looks like my entire neighborhood too. i live on the north end of spfld, out in the county in a subdivision that has/(had) LOTS of big mature trees. i have never seen anything like this ~ and i grew up in new england where the winters are pretty bad - at least as far as snow goes,,,but this ice,,,geez! i lost a very large pin oak, that just tipped over, thankfully not on my house, numerous branches, that thankfully did not damage the house. we've been without power & phone since 1/12 about 9pm. my bro and sis in law have power and we are staying there. we did stay in the house sunday night trying to keep a fire going as long as possible and in the middle of the night, the branches really started coming down. it sounded like artillary fire and made me sick to my stomach.....i kept thinking that something was going to come thru the roof. so we shut off the water and we haven't stayed there since. in the block behind us there is a large tree just split down the middle, and one that had three trunks,,,,,well,,,,,one came down on the house, another along side and one was cut down. i thank God that we've not sustained any major damage so far and am praying we DON'T get the snow forecast for tomorrow....i don't know how much more the trees can take! hope everyone is staying warm and safe--the weather has got to take a break pretty soon!

January 1, 2007 Ozark Angler Get Together!
damselfly replied to Gary Lange's topic in Upper Lake Taneycomo
I too had a great time! It was good to put names & faces together. Maybe next time Terry's knee will be healed and he can fish too. Leonard, I want to put in a 'standing order' for next year (or the next time we get together) for more 'seahorses'!! If ya'll missed 'em you missed some good eats!! Thank you too Phil for the tarps, they made the pavillion a lot warmer. -
I'll be there too, unless it's bite your butt cold and windy !! All this talk of grits --- LMW, I'm originally a yankee too, that has come to love them grits! But I like mine with butter, salt and tabasco---and cheese if you want them 'fancy' !! It'll be great to put some faces with names...I'll bring something to munch on -- not sure what right now....

Pontoon or Kayak
damselfly replied to Charley Hart's topic in Tips & Tricks, Boat Help and Product Review
i agree w/jdmidwest. kayak. i have a tarpon120 (wilderness) and love it. before buying i tried the sit inside and the sit on top models, and liked the SOT better as i found it easier to get in and out of. they can be anchored - i have a friend that does that. i also tried a pontoon, it was ok, but i didn't find it as manuverable as a yak. fly line & fish kept getting caught in the oars. very annoying..... -
Something unexpected on an Illinois River
damselfly replied to Gary Lange's topic in General Angling Discussion Archives
you might not be 'wading' too much longer! -
I would also be interested. I have one halfway started (or would that be halfway finished???!!! ) but it is difficult to get with the person who was helping me....so a class would be great. hopefully it could be very hands on??????????

Fished Fellows Today
damselfly replied to TeamKingTuckey's topic in Fellows Lake, Springfield Lake, McDaniels Lake
Wayne, a couple of months ago the two fisheries biologists for Fellows Lake and Pomme De Terre, did a program for our club ----- the program @Fellows is ongoing -
We were out there 4 years ago and stayed in W Yellowstone- can't remember the name of the hotel. We were there mid-June and fished--just missed the salmon fly hatch. HUGE BUGS! It was happening up river closer to Ennis. Saw most of the sights in the park-just a phenominal place!! My brother lives in Sheridan and said the park gets a little crazy with tourists mid summer so be prepared for that....but as far as fishing goes.....hire a guide and don't miss the Madison! There is also a visitors center outside the park up by Quake Lake. They have some interesting history there about the earthquake that took place back in the 60's that wiped out the side of a mountain or two there and dammed up the Madison for a while. As I said, interesting if you'd like a little history

Had an interesting experience at bennett one day....a friend and I were fishing down by the spring.....catching fish here and there....there was a very tall eldery man catching fish on every other cast.....he was walking down from the spring casting to the opposite bank in between the anglers standing in the current. we got to talking to him as he came by, and he gave us couple of flies he was using......an #8 renegade.....#8 mind you....i couldn't believe it....sure enough,,,,that changed the catch rate that afternoon for us at the spring...and have fished it since with success there.

Wayne~ I think you make some valid points in that, yes, it's a pain to reel up when you come to a bend or limbs that overhang the stream. ~~~ and reaching everything is certainly a limitation. What I do to compensate is --- carry a fishpond waist pak that has my fly boxes, tippet and leaders and store it where the 'drink holder' indentation is. Everything else I need is on my lanyard. To deal with the limbs etc, I lay the rod down and hold it with my knees above the reel with the tip forward & down & I've missed all but one. (which thankfully did not pop my rod!! thank you TFO!!) I also found the sit on top more comfortable because the bottom was not flat like the sit insides. That little bit of molding made the comfort difference for me (along with a padded seat). Everyone has brought up good points to consider really. I think that for me, as much as I enjoy catching fish, rolling with the flow of the river and enjoying the surroundings is just as relaxing and all part of it, and something I look forward to as I love being on the water. So the reeling up, holding the paddle across my lap while casting and paddling to position the yak with the flow of the river are all just part of it. For anyone considering a purchase I would recommend that they rent different styled yaks from different outfitters and try them that way. Fish the way they would normally fish and then decide. Another thing to consider is --- will you be fishing in colder weather???? If you are I would not recommend a sit on top - unless you like being wet AND cold

Hooking Mortality of Trout: Barbed vs. Barbless
damselfly replied to SilverMallard's topic in General Flyfishing Topics
Don, If I can I will roll 'em over underwater and briefly lift them out of the water to dislogde the fly. I forgot to mention in my last post that there is also a little tool, 'ketchem release' (i think is what its called) and is good for small flies. With it you don't even need to touch the fish. there is a groove on the tool, slip the line through it and slide it down to the fly, a little pressure and the fly comes out -- most of the time!!! I have had times where I've had trouble doing this but I believe that to be 'cockpit trouble' more so than a design flaw of the tool....if you know what i mean!!! -
Hooking Mortality of Trout: Barbed vs. Barbless
damselfly replied to SilverMallard's topic in General Flyfishing Topics
Don, The best way to handle a trout when releasing it is, of course, to not handle them at all if you can help it....however, if you have to handle them, my brother taught me to roll them over so they are upside down. This seems to keep them calm...remove the hook, roll 'em back and release. works for me most of the time.... -
An interesting thread.......Silver Mallard,,,,i am hoping (and assuming) your comment that domestic violence and child abuse is not violent crime was 'toungue in cheek'(or maybe I misread your reply) ......SW MO has some of the WORST domestic violence stats in the country...sad to say. As far as the casino goes,,,,,I'm against any more development on Taney....I was concerned when the Landing went in and am still concerned about how it and other development on Taney is going to affect water quality, etc. I too am concerned and agree with Phil....once the precent it set, that is all it's going to take and I don't want to see casino's all over the place.
