  1. Thanks Phil, I'll have to give it a shot next time just to see how "they" like it. I'm still pretty new at fly fishing & most of what I use are generally in the #20 -#24 size scuds, midges, & sow bugs. Been "learning" to do some stripping which has produced a few Trout, so I'd like to try some cracklebacks, sculpins, and some dry's. Thanks for the input! Gallagher
  2. Speaking of sculpins, what's the normal sculpin size that's fished At Taney, & are they used much while wading during the daytime hours? Thanks!
  3. Nice going, congrats!!!
  4. Very nice pics, tastefully done!
  5. Ok, I feel I should "chime in" here. All this talk about the practice of "shuffling" just hits me wrong. Myself,... I try my best not to disturb the natural habitat or disrupt another person's fishing, but inevitably the fish always seem to gather at or near ones feet hoping for dislodged aquatic crustaceans. I guess I have a hard time trying to understand why it is that some people make this a common practice, I'd much rather have fish looking for the source of food on the end of my line rather than congregating at my feet. Probably wrong for me to suggest, but if a person is into shuffling, I'd say forgo the cost of a rod & reel and just rely on that net. Not a whole lot of sport there! I liken it to the same practice of putting up a Deer stand in close proximity to a food plot then blasting their unsuspecting brains out, and they call that "hunting" what actually is being hunted other than a way to keep warm. These are just my views & not intended to persuade others to do or not to do what they please. Rant off
  6. After receiving the 5/6 Alpha series awhile back & being satisfied with it AND the Nano TI rod, I decided to bite the bullet and purchase one of their reel/net specials, I thought I'd try their 3/4 Trout series for my 4WT. I placed the order last Sat, they only ship on weekdays, today it shows up at my house well packaged. Another great looking product from Allen FF, the net is rubberized & made of real nice inlaid burl looking wood, again well constructed, I just hope it lands plenty of fish & the fish appreciate their temporary fishnet slicker.
  7. FWIW, I had pretty good luck yesterday on some of Brett's G-Bugs over on the other side of the island just below the dam opposite the "rock drop", also picked up a few more down at the riffle just below the boat ramp. All were in the 10" to 16" range. Plenty of sunshine, plenty of solitude, and plenty of unpredictable wind!
  8. Editing my post as I found my answer after seeing Phil's posting
  9. FINALLY had a chance to give the new Nano TI 5Wt rod & Alpha series 5/6 Wt reel a try and I'm real pleased at the weight, action & feel of this setup casting for the most part is a "breeze", and the action is great, as it stands right now (given my current inventory) this will be my go to rod for Taney. When I purchased this I received the promo cost on the reel, the promo cost on the new Nano TI rod & a discount for purchasing both! He later offer a couple of fly boxes for free as a try em' & see if you like em' deal. Very nice products and Justin does what he can to ensure he has repeat customers. He's currently offering this reel/net special. http://www.allenflyfishing.com/products/alpha-reel
  10. Very nice!!! I really need to get back down there & try out some new gear.
  11. Great shot! So,... was this northern Ark or southern Mo?
  12. Yeah, I've never seen my backing before either but I wanted to load this reel within 1/4" of the diameter.
  13. Yeah but I need to redo it as I didn't get quite enough backing in at first.
  14. TC this might just be the same line I had my wife p/u for me along with some new waders. It's made by Cortland but is pkg'd in a White River baggie. If you look at the two loose ends they look to be about the same, but I just noticed further into the roll the diameter looks greater, so I'll unroll the stuff & mic it just to be sure before I spool it on. Thanks guy's!
  15. Eash! no tag nor loop
  16. I recently purchased some new flyline to line up my new reel. Trouble is, is that it's hard to see which end is the larger diameter on the wff line, should I try to located a taper on the 1st 30'section of the line (outer end) or is there a better way to determine this? Thanks! Sorry for the lame question.
  17. Great fishing report Don! Thanks for posting those pics of inspiration. I've been meaning to get down to Taney & break in a new rod/reel but work has prevented that from happening thus far. Glad to hear you're yankin' the lips off of 'em!
  18. Thanks guy's,...all good info. I have a 4wt TFO with 4 wt line that I find hard to feel the rod load, so I revert to my other 5wt with much softer action, (I'm still a novice fly fishing guy), so after discovering the over lining, I decided to give my new 5wt rod 6wt line as it's a med fast action in hopes that I'll be able to feel it load plus hopefully be able to shoot more line out.
  19. I recently purchased a new fly rod & a new reel, reel is a 5/6wt & the rod is a 5wt 9'med fast action. It was suggested that I try & overline my new rod as in use the next size up line. I've done some research on this & it seems to be a fairly common practice, has anyone else given this a try & if so what are your thoughts. I might also add that some info I've come across state that some fly line manufacturers DO in fact make the like for like (rod/reel) line a bit on the heavy size for it's rating. Thanks!
  20. Well I just received one of "Allen's" new Nano TI 5wt 9' 4pc rods, it nearly looks identical to an Orvis Helios rod & I'll have to tell you this is one nice looking rod. Everything arrived as promised & in good order, the workmanship on this seems very high quality & I can't believe just how lightweight this thing actually is @ 2.6 oz. Can't wait to try it out soon! Nice work Justin!!!
  21. Finally had a chance to review the Alpha 5/6wt reel I ordered from Justin. This is one nice looking reel & the quality seems to be top notch, the drag seems so smooth with no apparent "breakover" release when the drag kicks in, just nice smooth & steady! I'll be breaking this in on some trout after my Nano TI rod shows. Nice work Justin! Thanks again, Gallagher
  22. Looks like a great time was had by all! Nice pics too. Don, is that you in the hooded camo getup diggin' in th' pot? You all look like you're cold or something, I just got back from where it was -44 w/ wind chill -70 . I had a chance to do some flying at our clubs' annual Polar Bear Fly on NYD or I'da made it down. Thanks for posting the pics & Happy New Year to all & to all a great year of fishing!
  23. I Just ordered a 5/6 Alpha Series reel from Justin yesterday. I'll report back with my findings after it arrives.
  24. Curious to hear from those who have received and tried the reels that Justin @ Allen's Fly Fishing is offering and what your experiences are, likes, dislikes, design layout, reliability? They're great looking reels! Tnx Sorry for the double post, but I thought it would get more traffic here and is in the correct topic area.
