  1. I was thinking about the deluxe box kit from Cabelas. I think it is around $35 and it just has the tools. Is there an online video that you all would recommend on basic fly tying essentials?
  2. I am taking the leap and want to start tying my own flies. I would like to find out from you all, before I buy, what you recommend. Either a kit with just tools or a kit that has materials too. It seems to me that a lot of the kits have materials that I wouldn't need. I would like to get fly recipes from Oklahoma anglers that are usable in my home waters. Your advice would be greatly appreciated. Tight Lines! John
  3. Gregg, when I was fishing with you last Sunday, you were using a white fly as a strike indicator. How do you rig that so you don't have to break off and retie to change the depth?
  4. "The charm of fishing is that it is the pursuit of what is elusive but attainable, a perpetual series of occasions for hope." John Buchan

  5. Hey Hopper! It was nice to meet you and great fishing with you. That fish I had on that was jumping and then spit my fly out? I had lost my reel in the river right when I got him and was trying to retrieve my reel but the fish was pulling my line out causing me to not be able to get my reel. Talk about a fishing story. Tight Lines!
  6. Went down to the LIR late today. Fished a couple of hours at the beginning of the river shut off. Caught a couple of trout on a purple san juan worm. Lots of hook-ups. Met "Hopper" down there. Great to meet you. Tight Lines!!!
  7. Made it back from my trip to the Roaring River. It was a good trip, although I didn't catch but one trout. I didn't know that there was more to the river but the park until I was ready to leave. Good information for my next trip up there. Did stop by Tim's fly shop and it was like a kid in a candy store. Here is a pic of the only fish I caught.

  9. Thanks for the advice, I will surely need it. I will let you know how I did when I get back. Hopefully have some pics.
  10. Thanks for the info. I will have to go there. I am going to the Roaring river state park this weekend. I am very excited to fish it and see how I do with my flyrod.
  11. I went to the LIR on Saturday and caught a few small trout at the Watts area. Lots of little trout in the area. I would like to try some other areas. Where is the "T&M" and the gravel pits?
  12. Thanks for all of the advice. Definitely given me something to go on now. Thanks Zach for the offer. I will definitely give you a heads up when I am going again. Any help would be great. Tight Lines! John
  13. Thanks for all of the wise input. I especially like the advice of lifting your fly rod 45 degrees above the water and following the line down. That seems to be a way of detecting strikes without an indicator or "thingamabobber". LOL. I really appreciate all of the advice. John
  14. The info is great. The fifteen foot of leader - tippet combo is really a good idea. I hadn't thought of that. What about flyfishing with other flies. I tried a woolly buggar and a stonefly with no luck. Everytime I thought I was getting hits, nothing. A little frustrating but I am determined to catch a trout without an indicator, whether nymphing or otherwise.
  15. Like most of you all, I went fly fishing on the Lower Illinois this past weekend. I have learned to fly fish mainly with a nymph and indicator. I really would like to wean myself off of the indicator and fly fish without it. It seems to be a crutch that I can't catch anything without. Any advice on some tips and things I should look for. I tried it this past weekend and had no luck. Fly tips and fishing tips would be greatly appreciated. John
  16. I am planning a trip to Taney sometime in May, before Memorial Day. I have never been. I am also a newbie to Fly Fishing, about two years. I thought maybe someone could give me some advice on where to stay, a cabin for two preferably. I am from Tulsa and have only fished trout on the Lower Illinois in Oklahoma. Thanks.
  17. Thanks. I have noticed that your Bobwhite is your best fly for producing. I will have to start tying so I can have some. Thanks. JOhn
  18. Sounds like an awesome day! What flies where you using? I thought about going Saturday, but of course they were generating. Thanks for the report. John
  19. Checking in.
  20. Thanks for all of the help and insight. I appreciate your help. John
  21. I have been watching the blogs and have a question or two about fishing woolly buggars and soft hackles. I read a blog that says that you cast across or slightly down and then strip the line. The fish usually will bite on the swing or directly down stream. I am not sure what they mean by on the swing or directly down stream. Also, I have tried fishing the woolly buggar and soft hackle and never seem to get bites. I watch the line, even as it is sinking, and nothing. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.
  22. These where rainbows. I thought it was quite unusual for them to be so small.
  23. I have had great success their. Everytime I fish there I catch trout. Sunday was the first time I caught such small trout though. It was fun never the less. I fish the area from the walk down area down from the parking lot down to where the big tree stump sticks out of the water.
  24. I was at the Simm Watts area below the stocking shoot. I was fishing around the are where the boulders are on the bank. Fairly deep hole. I was amazed at how small they where.
  25. I went to the LIR yesterday. I got there about 11 am and left around 2:30 pm. Had a good day. Caught around 20 rainbows. What I noticed is that quite a few of the trout were 6 inches or less. The smallest trout I have caught. Just wondering if anyone else has seen this.
