My wife and I took a two day class with Jim Rogers at Bennett Spring last year. Depending on the class he will include a fly rod and reel combo. -

If I had to do it over I would take a fly fishing class. That would answer most of your questions. -
40 years at Bennett and Montauk, 50 years in the Mississippi River.
