  1. Welcome to the forum and to the fly fishing world... Season? We don' neeeds no steenkin' seasons! Seriously, I know what you're talking about, but there is good fishing - C&R or otherwise - right now...
  2. Cortland has a line called "444 Sylk" that is suppose to be a "synthetic" silk material and is designed for bamboo or fiberglass rods to give it that "classic look and feel." I'm not familiar with these lines, but just know Cortland is taughting these for bamboo. As for modern line sizes, there is a good correlation, but the best advice is to try a couple of different weights on the rod to see which one casts the best for you. If you are pretty sure it is a 7 WT rod, cast a 6, 7, and 8 WT line and go with which one feels the best.
  3. Mikey, Most palsas are white foam with a color "glued" to them. If you can't find white, just buy the ones with the color and shave off the color with a knife.
  4. With a "strategically placed" wooly bugger...

    Help!

    True, John... Very true...
  6. MICHAEL! Are you listening? Have you got these? (Shoulda looked closer yesterday...)
  7. Welcome to the forum. Yep, I'd like to come up there and check that out as well. Hey, RR... Talk to Fred Wiseman (NEAFF member) about fishing up in that area...
  8. The "Premier" fly rod is being discontinued, so that's why they are coming down in price. They are continuing the Premier spin and cast lines...
  9. I don't know if it's true, but I heard there is a "Taneycomo Nights Calendar" coming out soon...
  10. Car trouble puts a dark cloud over a fishing trip, but still a better day than at work... Hope all turns out well for you...
  11. My main 5 WT is a 9 ft St Croix Premier. While not the prettiest rod on the river and not the BEST casting, it has served me well. I like the feel of the cast with it and have no real complaints, just that I've cast better rods... but most were higher priced. I got the rod as part of a package and it has replaced my White River 8.5 ft 5WT... For the money, I think you'll enjoy the rod just fine.
  12. I think Leonard let one of those bats and a beaver bite him and now he has night vision and radar... (OK... small LED flashlight clipped to your vest. On only when you are moving or checking for the Taneycomo Giant Man-Eating Squid...)
  13. Dano's thread about changing a reel retrieve from LH to RH begged this poll for me. I use left hand retrieve and I'm right handed, but I know many use only RH... Comments as to why?
  14. Lot of guys here use half a palsa (stick on foam) indicator. I use those or a very small football with the rubber in the center to hold it in place. Davy Wotton recommends using yarn, but he has a "special" type of yarn he uses that he says doesn't get as wet. The best advice I can give you is to try several types and find what you like best.

    Help!

Great avitar by the way. Sorta looks like JB... Anyway, don't know which way you're coming from, but when you get in the area, make a trip to MOUNTAIN RIVER FLY SHOP in Cotter and they will help you with the flies you need and give you advice on where to fish. Take a look at the website for some of their flies. Also, Dale Fulton's Blue Ribbon Flies in Mt Home is a good fly shop. Both are "must stops" for me when I'm in the area. Hey, John... Any tricks to fishing the Y2K? Just drift and swing or strip also?
  16. Only if you are the White Witch of Narnia...

    Help!

Well, honestly, I have not found a BAD place to fish on the White below BSD. And don't forget to make a trip or two to the Norfork tailwaters. As for flies, scuds (trout crack), woolies, and soft hackles during low water. High water, I know SJWs, but will leave other suggestions to those that fish high water more. Places - Don't skip the BS dam area (if it's open by that time) or the park area just downstream, Wildcat Shoals, Cotter area, and Rim Shoals. If in a boat, the area above Rim Shoals to Rim is a nice float. Also, put in at Norfork at the confluence and motor upstream or downstream. If you have time, take the boat down to Calico Rock and fish that area. On the Norfork, just below the dam and the handicap access are both good fishing. From the access, go upstream to the C&R area for some really nice size fish. But below the access is really sweet fishing and eye candy for the soul. If you are going to use a boat, put in at the dam and float downstream below Gene's. Many of these are as much for the scenary as they are for the fishing. Some really beautiful vistas on several sections of the river. A trip with one of the guides that frequent this board will be worth a thousand - make that a million - words written on here.
  18. I can vouch for the Orvis Clearwaters. If you are going to fish a LOT then I would upgrade to something like a Silver Label or better. But if cost is an issue, then the Clearwaters are a good choice.
  19. Congrats! Russ... Granpas MUST take responsibility for spoiling grandkids... It's our JOB man!!
  20. Sore... but better. Can't stand long enough to fish, but maybe before long...
  21. Steve, Very good points. I agree that most of the prices for used rods are outrageous considering the lack of warranty. I think you have to consider a couple other points as well. Sort of like buying a used car, are you buying someone else's problems? Why are they selling the rod? Like I said, I've only purchased the two TFOs used. And the ONLY reason I took the chance was the fact that I could buy a 3 WT and 8 WT rod for what the used 3 WTs were selling for on eBay.
  22. OK, guys and gals... Since the subject came up.... I was a Weight Watcher's member a few years ago. I have a certificate in my archives somewhere for losing over 100 lbs. in about a year with them. I lost a total of 118 lbs. and closer to 125 while on the WW plan when they got rid of my leader, I got a divorce, and a few other depressing things happened. My point is that I learned something very important while with WW. You can eat ANYTHING you want as long as you pay attention to HOW MUCH you eat. Meatball sandwiches are fine as long as you eat only one and without a big basket of fries, a dozen seahorses, a bowl of bean soup, 3 chocolate oatmeal bars (by the way, Gary... where is THAT recipe?) My NYR is to eat more in moderation so that I can get back down to a weight I can live with... and my KNEE can live better with. OK.... the soapbox is vacant. NEXT!
  23. Yeah... and some of the answers might even be RIGHT!... Welcome to the forum...
  24. Vampire and Accountant.... are those not synonyms?
  25. Naw... just a cooler full of cold Bud... and a $75,000 boat...
