  1. The difference between being domesticated and being wild and having to fend for yourself. Similarities between nature and society are often interesting and profound: If an animal is led to the trough to feed daily with little effort and sheltered without any contribution soon they are easily led to the slaughter wihtout struggle until it is too late to find any recourse.

    #line?

I would start out with the 4# with the water flyling through like it is for two reasons. 1. The fish wll not get lots of time to see the line with 4 or more generators running and that is what has been happening most of the time lately. 2. If you get a 2+ pounder on which is always likely on the white and break off due to light line and fast current you will kick youself all the way to the car to load up with with the heaver line. If the bite is slow you can always tie on 50 yards of additional 2# on the end of the 4# to see if it helps to pick up fish. BTW you can just open the first post and scroll down to the bottom where you originally posted it and delete it. The original sender can do this or admin only.
  3. When I said "honor system" it was tongue in cheek. You are absolutely correct. The agents are too few and cannot cover the large territory they have. I think agents do a great job but I wonder why when we see so much abuse at Taney especially on week ends why spot checks aren't made. I remember a recent thread where there was lots of comments pro and con about the crack down on the streams this summer with canoe traffic and drinking, nudity etc.
  4. The agents are usually very descrete and ask the violator to leave the water and then take them aside and make their case. I know because I got so fed up with one guy at BSSP on one trip that I documentated and then went up to the office and turned him in. They took him to his van and checked his cooler which was all they really needed. The agent asked my name and I gave him a business card. He later sent me a note telling me the man had all of his fishing gear taken, fish taken, got a $400 fine and lost fishing priveledges in Mo for 3 years. He was out of state. In 50 years of fishing that is the only time I saw someone busted. I have been asked to show a license twice in MO and 3 times out of state. I fish in Texas and Florida and see people checked often especially in places that attract lot of folks and out of staters. Why don't Missouri come down to Taney on weekends when it is crowded? I guess the honor system must be our policy. We were told that the higher fees for boat registration would allow the state to hire more agents and pay the existing ones more. It just seems that if they would show up once and a while with a fishing vest on and make some random checks the word would get around.
  5. I saw a 20# 5 oz brown this week end in outlet 2 by the ladder in the clear water and near the surface. In case you ask how I know exactly how much it weighted........ I saw it's scales as it swam slowly by. WOW first the PMS pine maribou streamer and now the PMS ......Previously mentioned streaker from National Geographic.
  6. After seeing the number of folks in the outlets today I passed on competing with the snagroes there for a trip to Bennet instead on the way home. Now I remember why I haven't been to Bennet for the last few years. The first thing I say was two stringers of fish tied to the bank with seven total fish. A guy hurried over to tell me that those were his kids fish and that they left to go to the cabin because they were to cold. Later one of the kids returned who was bearly 2 foot tall with a snoppy rod and stood by dad. Dad took the seven fish to the cabin to the cabin and returned later with another empty stringer to fill. So much for a 4 fish limit. The spring was boiling and water a little murky. I arrived around noon but didn't stay to long since the crowd was side by side in most of the hot spots. I did catch 4 at the spring hole on a peach egg fly fishing it deep and weighted. BTW snagroes is the politically correct word for snagers which seem to enjoy catching fisht in the tail and then letting them fight in the fast current until they are completely exausted. What sports. I thought they had stocked spoonbill in taney for a while.
  7. I stopped by the dam at outlet 2 just before dark. They were running 4 units and the water was up to the fourth step. I tried a orange zebra under a chartruse and red eggfly. Hooked two small rainbows on the egg then I tried a sculpen 1/180 jig about 5 ' under a indicator and caught two. I only had abut 1/2 hour of light left so I tied my version of the salmon y2k and they started to nail it immediately. I put a split shot about 8 inches above the fly and flosted it about 5 to 10 foot from the edge of the ladder throwing up toward the outlet and dead flaoting down. Most of the strikes just stopped the indicator of drug it sideways or back like draging on the bottom. I broke off a nice rainbow and released 12 or so more. I had forgotten my headlight so I went back to the condo until morning. I will probally try outlet 1 or up by the cable tomorow. I am going to try to throw some white jigs or wooleys out and float them down from the cable or outlet 1 if it is not to crowded.
  8. Thanks for the info. I might just stop off at Bennet instead of Taney and come back there later in the month.
  9. I am stranded in Denton Texas on the way home with a scheduled stop At Taney. How are the roads across Oak an Missouri along 44. I hpe to get out in the morning. There is 9 inches of snow here and these nice folks have no itea how to drive on snow and Ice. I will spend the night at Howard Johnsons and hope to escape tomorrow up 35 and across 44 to Springfield. Any suggestions. How is the water and fishing below the dam at Taney?
  10. You got my interest. If my trip to San Antonio goes well monday and Tuesday I plan on stopping by Taney during the later part of the week on my way home. Put some back in for me for Friday Sat or Sunday.
  11. Thanks m angler That is what I thought it might be. Purchased in bass pro in St. charles. They do not have any selection of thread or hooks in stock most of the time. I guess I will have to order or go into st. louis to feather craft.
  12. Jeremy: I redone the pics.
  13. This is the thread and a zmidge made from it. Danville 4 strand 330 denier / strand. Sorry about the poor pics.
  14. Jeremy: I recently purchased some thread and was looking for a pumpkin orange or burnt orange. The closest I could match in color was danvilles brand. When I started to tie it on the hook I found that it was four strands on the spool. Each was 300 denier. I just used one strand for making some midges. Why the four strands and what is that used for. I problally will just wind it off onto a single spool since one strand worked fine and I really like the color of orange that it was.
  15. Roubidoux creek is in Pulaski county and is formed from the waters of Rubidoux spring and flows through the city of Waynesville to the Gasconade river three miles away. A new park formed in 1991 starts 2.5 miles below the utility line crossing the creek toward the Gasconade. It is accessible by road in most of that section and is from 20 to 50 feet wide at some points. It is restricted to artificials only. The nearest lodging is in St. Roberts which has several choices. Food can be found in Waynesville which has some neat restaurants. It is stocked with Rainbows and sometimes browns.
  16. Is it just me or do resturants give poorer service when they are less busy? I am amazed that when there are fewer customers the servers seem to gather and talk instead of serving tables. I often call for the manager if service is bad, but I also comment when it is very good and tip accordingly. Most of the resturants that I frequent know me by name and make an extra effort to help my wife who is disabled. I usually don't even need to ask for the extra napkins needed and sometimes get extra things that I didn't even order without cost. There is rarely a good excuse for bad service and places that do not understand that don't stay in business.
  17. The last several times I clicked on OAF I didn't need to log on. Maybe it will start to stay loged on. The only thing I did was to unclick the box refrest and then click it again. Seems to be working ok now.
  18. Interesting article. I started tieing what I call size 18 body on a size 16 hook a couple of years ago. It doesn't seem to be quite an issue on larger scud hooks. The medhodt did what you describe in the article as more for hook ups and also made it easier for my age worn eyes to tie. I saw little difference from the smaller hooks since I bleieve the fish see mostly the profile and view the untied part of the hook as just part of the midge shuck or wasted larvae. I definately will try the 2499 in my next round of vise time. I just got the cabella's super spring catalog and will check to see if I can bulk order some. I am happy to see you back posting.
  19. For some reason the system makes me log in every time I leave even though I checked the remember me box. I wondered if anyone else is experienceing this. The up side is I have my pass word down pat now. This just started after returning from florida working on my home computer. Any suggestions.
  20. Jeremy: I usually buy the 2487 scud hooks. They seem to work great for me. Why the 2499. It looks like a heavier wire and barbless. Is it just a brand thing? Thanks for taking the time sharing the patterns. The forum is much more interesting reading about fishing stuff.
  21. Trav: You really surprized me on that last comment. For a McCain supporter to be quoting Bill Clinton?????????? "I take no offense because I don't really care what you think man" Hey Trav: I do have one question. What is a sport bass? My guess it is sort of the bass version of a dink for a trout. I read lots of posts but have never heard that term before.
  22. I got three old email noltifications today also. one would open the other two dudn't. I think it was because I had preeviously deleted them after I had read them.
  23. Welcome cf2040. Great forum with lots of diversity. Seldom a dull moment. Pitch right in and participate. You don't need to be an expert and you can learn a lot while have a great time in the process.
  24. Actually Trav I am an American which gives me the priveldege of withhold my choice until I consider all of the flip flopping from both sides. Both parties have embraced such a broad range of diversity that there isn't much difference between the two when I comes to performance. Party platforms are a joke. I will wait until I see which McCain shows up on the ballot.. the one described by Romney and other prominent republicians as a far left liberal or the newly created image now being presented. I am not to enamored with Obama and Hillery is history unless she has a miracle before or during the convention. For many this election will be more of who we vote against not for. If It weren't for the swift boating of McCain when he was in the primary against facing Bush he would be the president now and would have had my vote.
  25. A buddy of mine posed a simuliar question to me a few years back and I recommended Lilleys. You are a short drive from the dam or you can rent a boat from them very reasonably. Good advice can be found at Lilleys or at the two fly shops on the way to the dam. Shore fishing is pretty good there at the taliwaters but I would recommend renting a boat for the best experience. My buddly Jake and his buddies go back every year since their first trip. His friends are not accomplished anglers but catch fish and have a ball. The boat gets you away from the crowds and lots to do in Branson in the off time.
