Dutch Posted February 27, 2008 Posted February 27, 2008 It is named for Taney County Missouri so Taney Co Mo. The a sounds like a and the ey sounds like e. So it would be like Ta Nee.
Trav Posted February 28, 2008 Posted February 28, 2008 You mean it isnt named after Perry Como's dog? Taney Como? Haha "May success follow your every cast." - Trav P. Johnson
Terry Beeson Posted February 28, 2008 Posted February 28, 2008 (Pardon my "old western movie tone") Many moons ago the Crowrapahache people lived on bank of river. When white man come, he bring box that make music and big canoe called Sammy Lane. Then white man want to name stream, so name it after big chief of Crowrapapache... Chief Taneycomo.... then trade hunting grounds on river for dry dust flat land in Oklahoma... (Sounds plausable, don't it...?) TIGHT LINES, YA'LL  "There he stands, draped in more equipment than a telephone lineman, trying to outwit an organism with a brain no bigger than a breadcrumb, and getting licked in the process." - Paul O’Neil
Trav Posted February 28, 2008 Posted February 28, 2008 Did Cheif Taneycomo play the ukulele? If so, I can buy that story Terry. Haha "May success follow your every cast." - Trav P. Johnson
Project Healing Waters Posted February 29, 2008 Posted February 29, 2008 Locals call the county TAY-NEE. But most call the lake TAN-EE-CO-MO. Go figure. I've always relied on the predominant local pronunciation of things to give me guidance. For example: Nevada, MO...folks from SWMO ALL say Nuh-VAY-duh instead of Neh-VAH-duh (like the state). http://www.projecthealingwaters.org
Trav Posted February 29, 2008 Posted February 29, 2008 Is Missouri pronounced Missou-ra, Or Missou-ree? Like PHW said, its all in what area of the state you are. When it comes to dealing with state government, I call it Misery. Haha "May success follow your every cast." - Trav P. Johnson

KATroutman13 Posted February 29, 2008 Author Posted February 29, 2008 Is Missouri pronounced Missou-ra, Or Missou-ree? Like PHW said, its all in what area of the state you are. When it comes to dealing with state government, I call it Misery. Haha 21 days my friend, 21 days. Actually this has to do with my application to the Taney County prosecutor's office. I was telling a friend from Ozark I was applying there and she corrected my pronunciation. We had a discussion. I decided to let this board be the neutral decision maker.
Trav Posted February 29, 2008 Posted February 29, 2008 A word of advice KA...Private Practice. Cant even pay back your student loans off what the county pays an Asst DA. Well you could if you want to drive a 1993 pickup and live in a trailer down by the river. Haha At least you like to fish, so we know you wont go hungry.
