3wt Posted February 27, 2008 Posted February 27, 2008 It's what feeds the C&R area. Yes, springfead, yes has trout, some look like a submarine. It has a deep section that is closest to the raceways, and a "flats" section that is beyond the handicap access jetty. There are some behemoth fish in the flat area sometimes, but you need to be invisible, fishing without line or leader with a perfect imitation of a fly to catch them. They pretty much get spooked if you get close enought to see them. Pretty low pressure on the whole. I learned to flycast near the raceway on the lake. I find still water to be pretty much a yawner to fish.
Snow Fly Posted February 28, 2008 Posted February 28, 2008 I have been told there are some very big Grass Carp in there also. "God gave fishermen expectancy, so they would never tire of throwing out a line"

10pointer Posted February 28, 2008 Posted February 28, 2008 i remember the old days when they had quite a few trout in there....now they got few trout and them big things you might be seeing schooled up are the grass carp. That lake seems to get more moss and junk in it every year. Not worth the time, yea there are a few springs in it but with all the fishing around it, id fish somewhere besides the lake for sure!
Paola Cat Posted February 28, 2008 Posted February 28, 2008 I agree with the other posters. It's real tough to fish. There are some giants in there. I've caught a couple on hopper imitations in the fall ... but most of the time it's not worth the effort and has been declining over the years. PC Cheers. PC
Greg Posted February 28, 2008 Posted February 28, 2008 Last summer when I was there I fished that lake and did pretty well. It was fun to kind of stalk the fish and cast to them. I didn't catch anything big but took 5 or 6 in the couple of hours I fished it. At one point there was a fairly large school of bows in the middle of the lake. If you cast into the middle of them they spooked. But if you cast slightly ahead of the direction they were swimming - a strike almost everytime. I was using small beadhead nymphs. I only saw trout in the lake except one or 2 bluegills. Greg "My biggest worry is that my wife (when I'm dead) will sell my fishing gear for what I said I paid for it" - Koos Brandt Greg Mitchell
jdmidwest Posted February 28, 2008 Posted February 28, 2008 The biologist that runs the park say he stocks it once a month. It does not have the fish that it did a few years ago. 10 years ago, I fished the runoff out of the lake going thru the wooded section of the old lake. Its dry for the most part now. What you see now is a fraction of the original impoundment. The levee that runs around the section used to form a big lake at one time. drew03cmc Posted February 28, 2008 Posted February 28, 2008 Hmm...might have to try that one out. i love stillwater trout fishing Andy
Snow Fly Posted February 29, 2008 Posted February 29, 2008 A friend of mine has fished Montauk for a number of years and the first time (5/6 yrs) I fished there we went up to the lake. The number of BIG fish around the outlet which drains into the C&R area was unbelievable . He claims there a still large numbers of BIG trout in the lake BUT they stay near the far shore line in the shade of the over hanging trees . I know there is no way I can throw a line the distance required to reach the far shore line. On top of the distance you have a limited amount of room for your back cast. It would sure be interesting to find out if there are many on the other side. Kinda like the old saying "The grass always looks greener on the other side of the fence" "God gave fishermen expectancy, so they would never tire of throwing out a line"
