Members KRflyfisher Posted February 14, 2006 Members Posted February 14, 2006 Hey just wanting to hear from some folks who have tried out the multi tip fly lines that I see in the magazines. I know that a while back I heard that they had a sort of hinge in them when cast, but I can only assume that this has been corrected with the advances in technology. I would love to be able to fish all of the water column without all the experience of extra spools and line set ups. So are they worth it or not? Any thoughts? Experience? KR

Danoinark Posted February 18, 2006 Posted February 18, 2006 KR I don't have any of the multi type lines, but I do have some sinking mono poly leaders that I use occassionaly. (they come in various sink rates) I use a loop to loop to the flyline to attach. I haven't noticed hinging, but they can be hard to cast typical of a sinking tip, or full sinking line..The poly leaders are less expensive than the interchangable tips...Airflow sells them and also Cabelas...I also think that Feathercrafts in St. Louis has them.or even their own brand...But Phil may have them also.....Dano Glass Has Class "from the laid back lane in the Arkansas Ozarks"
Members KRflyfisher Posted February 18, 2006 Author Members Posted February 18, 2006 Dano- Thanks for the reply, I really probably should have posted this under another Topic Heading. I end up getting more opportunity to read about flyfishing than to do it because I'm in grad school, have 2 kids under 2yrs, and 2 jobs. (I'm not complaining about life except that I don't get to fish as much as I would like, but who does!) And I read things about using sinking tip lines or full sinking lines to fish sculpin patterns like Dave Whitlocks sculpins or to get bass bugs down to structure for bass. Since I love tying all the Whitlock patterns I would love to be able to fish them more effectively. I have looked at the mono poly leaders but I guess I thought they might not quite work as well, but if they have worked for you, I think I'll give them a shot. Thanks for your advice! KR
Danoinark Posted February 18, 2006 Posted February 18, 2006 KR...sounds like your plate is full, reminds me of myself about 20 years ago. Anyway, I think the key to fishing the sinking poly leaders or a sink tip/full sinking line is to keep the tippet short. I sometimes just add only 2 to 4 feet of tippet directly to the sinking leader by a loop to loop. This seems to get the bug down to where it needs to be....Dano Glass Has Class "from the laid back lane in the Arkansas Ozarks"
Members KRflyfisher Posted February 20, 2006 Author Members Posted February 20, 2006 Dano- Well I'm going to give it a shot, at very least if it will help me figure out if I like this type of fly fishing and if I need a full on sinking or sinking tip fly line for it later I'll be ready for it. Thanks for the help. KR

KR Let us know how it works for you....by the way, in my post I mean't to say I add no more than 2 foot of tippet to the sinking leader...I don't know where the 2 to 4 ft came from, other than it was a geezer moment...
