Ted Calcaterra Posted February 14, 2006 Posted February 14, 2006 I often have my split shot slide down the tippet when fishing. I am afraid if I pinch the shot too hard, it might damage the strength of the tippet. Any ideas or suggestions for keeping the split shot about 10 inches above the fly without having it slide down?
Brian K. Shaffer Posted February 14, 2006 Posted February 14, 2006 It might be a pain in the butt to do this - but it works. Make a loop then put the shot on this loop and close it tight. This way you have a ring of line around the shot.. holding it put. If it comes off.. it just opens up the loop and you can replace the shot. This way is easier... but more time consuming. Clip off the line where you want the shot.. retie it on with a double surgeons knot and put the shot above the knot. The first way is how I do it - Brian Just once I wish a trout would wink at me! ozarkflyfisher@gmail.com I'm the guy wearing the same Simms longbilled hat for 10 years now.
Gavin Posted February 14, 2006 Posted February 14, 2006 I usually put the shot above a knot like Brian suggests. If your using decent sized tippet, I sometimes tie an overhand knot in my tippet above the fly. If your doing some serious bobber fishing, you might want to I'll get rid of the tapered leader in favor of a serious bobber fishing rig. Start with a 3-4ft a leader butt section of 20-30lb mono, add 4-9ft of 8-10lb flouro, 2-3ft of tippet, a heavy fly, 2-3 more ft of tippet, and another heavy fly or an overhand knot and some shot. Cheers.
Kansas Fly Fisher Posted February 14, 2006 Posted February 14, 2006 I found a setup in a fly shop that works GREAT. If I remember right they call them TUBBIES? It's a clear piece of flexible plastic that you put in on the line. Then the shot is slid in between the line and the tube. They have two sizes of shot and tubes. You use a magnetized "stick" to put the shot in the tube. This also holds the shot when not in use. I've never had them slide on me when using them. Phil may know what I'm talking about. I have seen them at BPS. I got mine at a fly shop in Bennett. Tight lines John Born to Fish, Forced to Work KSMEDIC.COM
Brian K. Shaffer Posted February 14, 2006 Posted February 14, 2006 I have some of the Toobies shot.. just never got around to trying it. Off your recommendation - I will give it a shot! Kansas Fly Fisher Posted February 15, 2006 Posted February 15, 2006 Off your recommendation - I will give it a shot! ( shot.. get it ) Ouch! Let me know how you like them. I only use them now. John Born to Fish, Forced to Work KSMEDIC.COM
Wayne SW/MO Posted February 15, 2006 Posted February 15, 2006 Another option is to tie a tippet on at the distance you want the shot and leave one of the tag long, pinch your shot on it. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
Greg Posted February 15, 2006 Posted February 15, 2006 I plan to give those "toobies" a try as well. I've seen them the last year or so in the stores and catalogs but figured it was a gimmick. Split shot drive me crazy! The soft moldable tungsten works pretty well. But in the winter it tends to turn rock hard and is difficult to use. Al Agnew Posted February 17, 2006 Posted February 17, 2006 Basically I use one or the other of Brian's methods. Seems like I'm always fishing a two nymph rig, so I'll tie a piece of tippet to my leader that's about 18-24 inches long with a double surgeon's knot. Put the split shot just above the knot. Tie on the upper fly about 8 inches below the knot using a palomar knot and leaving the tag end (it'll be 12 inches or more long), and tie on the bottom fly on the end of the tag end. Don't know how many others ever use this method...works for me.
SilverMallard Posted July 16, 2006 Posted July 16, 2006 I just tie a single overhand know where i want the shot and pinch it on above that on fluoro tippet. With mono tippet I never have this problem and never break off at the shot either. I pinch them on pretty good.
