JJTroutbum had the below quote in a different topic and so I split this discussion out from the Multiple rig talks.

So the question(s) is: Is it legal to use a Fly Rod in Zone #3, or is Just Illegal to use the flies that are Legal in Zones #1 & #2?

I would love to use my fly rod with some Hot Glue Glo Balls in Zone 3. Is this Legal?

QUOTE (Trout Stalker @ Feb 9 2008, 06:13 AM)

Wouldn't it be great to have a fly rod only area.

JJTroutBum:

I have thought over that very same idea and decided that I would not want that for the simple reason that I cant stand the bait only sections that restrict fly fishing in some of the parks. For instance some of the water in zone three a beautiful set of riffles that goes on for about a hundred yards. That I never see anyone fishing with bait. But yet I'm a criminal if I were to swing a wet or soft-hackle through the very same water. Makes me want to glue a salmon egg on a soft hackle.

<_< Good question that brings up bad feelings. I have been kicking around the idea of just adding some sent to my flies or in the least carrying some in my vest. In case I would need to "add" some more just to remain above the regs. ;)

The set of riffles I mentioned above are no where near the bait fishermen normally and would mean nothing but a headache for anyone that would try to tight line a minnow or ect.. Therefor I would be mostly alone to do what ever style of presentation I prefer. Without annoying any of the chuckers.

And if I did by my mere presence. If howdy doody wants to correct me by using force. I had better not feel in fear for my life or threat of serious injury because that could possibly open up a BIG hole. :o

I thought I had read some posts where guys were fishing plastic worms on a fly rod in zone 3. I myself would like to try it sometime but I would choose a later time of the day and try not to interfer with any bait fishers. I use to be one for trout and still like to catfish occasionally. I think they should have the right off way in that area. BUT if the riffles don't have a soul around, why not? Still If someone came up to baitfish...I'd let them have the spot. I've got zones 1 and 2 and it's probably about time for the cream midge hatch up by the gauge house anyway! Oh Boy!! Just my .02

I think you would need to use more than just scent on a fly to fish in Zone 3 with a fly. A friend of mine tried to use a fly with a piece of soft rubber on the hook....Guess what? Can't do that. Years age I use to see a old timer ( now I'm an old timer) use a fly rod in the riffles Zone 3 with a minnow for bait, use to catch some nice size trout. Could be wrong and sure won't be the first or last time.

I like to fish that area in the C&R winter season, to one in the way..............

You can use any kind of rod you want in any zone. The key is the kind of fly or bait that is being used in each zone. So you see spinning rigs up in Zone 1 throwing heavy single hook jigs that qualify as "single hook flies". It may draw some looks, but a fly line in the riffles may be a good way to present a soft plastic worm in Zone 3. The regs clearly state for Zone 3 if it is not bait or soft plastic it can NOT be used regardless if scent has been added or not.

Ya but who really wants to use a plastic worm  I know I don't ! Maybe superglue a very small green/ brown rubber grub to a size 12hook and add a nice partridge hackle on top of that would be better than making a box for scented flies that would be cheating to use else where.

OK thats it I'm gonna make a line of bait flies for this summer. We'll have to get a get together for some experimenting after I hire a lawyer to go fishing. .....j/k about the lawyer.

All you need is a small hackled hook, so that you could slide on one of those grubs, or something like it. If its permanantly attached, then it counts as a fly, and can't be used in zone 3. If it's scented, it can't be used in Zone 1 or 2. So basically, it's kinda tough to find a loophole.

On the other hand, those small grasshoppers in the park would probably be pretty exciting on top in the riffles.

I have, on a few occasions fished zone 3 with a fly rod. Each time I was with my grandson who didn't have waders and would ply the shoreline with salmon eggs and such and I would fish small trout worms on a fly rod. Not my cup of tea actually, but, it was a nice peaceful way to spend a day and I did enjoy it. I even struck up a conversation with a bait chucker and (gasp) he was articulate and friendly. Dang it another myth exploded.
