Kansas Fly Fisher Posted March 10, 2008 Posted March 10, 2008 Just got back from a quick weekender at Roaring River. The water was up and running fast, color was stained but not real bad. The number 1 fly for me this weekend was a #16 Renegade. Caught all my fish but one on it. The only other producer was a Hare's Ear. I think I ended up around two dozen for the two days. Fished about 3 hours on Saturday and another 3 on Sunday. I also noticed MDC was out in force with weekend. Saw several trucks cruising the parking lots and watching. Also saw three individuals cited for various reasons. The first was in Zone 3 and using powerbait. The next two were up by the lodge but I'm not sure what they were doing wrong. It was VERY nice to see the boys out and watching. Made this old man's heart warm to see the illegal actions we watch go unpunished so much, get there just do today! Flysmallie Posted March 10, 2008 Posted March 10, 2008 The number 1 fly for me this weekend was a #16 Renegade. Caught all my fish but one on it. That makes sense. I fished yesterday and caught the majority on a #16 Griffith's Gnat. Did have a couple on a San Juan worm. Lot's of people, but we found some room to squeeze in and caught some fish. A little windy, but other than that it was a beautiful day.
Danimal Posted March 10, 2008 Posted March 10, 2008 I went up yesterday also. Caught about a dozen on zebra's (16) and poison tung (18). They were my first fish caught on self tied patterns (woohoo!). Nice day. Dan-o RELEASE THOSE BROWNIES!!
mhall02 Posted March 10, 2008 Posted March 10, 2008 I also noticed MDC was out in force with weekend. Saw several trucks cruising the parking lots and watching. Also saw three individuals cited for various reasons. The first was in Zone 3 and using powerbait. I thought you could use bait in zone 3? Did you maybe mean zone 2, that is where I have seen in the past the most blatant rule breaking. I remember years ago seeing some guys using worms during they week, they were ripping 'em in left and righ and high-tailed it out pretty quick. Yeah, I would say they knew what they were doing was wrong. I can't wait to get down there this year, great park. Usually use tan or grey skuds and an indicator in zone 2. Grew up fishing RR (lived around Monett) and have many fond memories of the park.
catman Posted March 10, 2008 Posted March 10, 2008 John you have a PM.. I was born at night, but not last night. Odds are with the prepared...
Steve Smith Posted March 10, 2008 Posted March 10, 2008 John; I saw your truck, but never caught up with you down at the old dam. I did run into to Ronnie [Fly Smallie] though about the time I was ready to leave. I wasn’t having much luck on anything consistently. Egg patterns, brown or green beetles, fur bugs, cracklebacks, and woolies would work for a while, but just caught stockers. I decided to try midges, but was out of foam indicators, so I tied on a foam hopper for an indicator with a zebra dropper. I got the hopper in one of OA’s fly swaps. Go figure… the trout torn up the hopper until it was absolutely beyond repair. I agree with John on the game wardens... good to see them cracking down on people. Catch you next time John. ___________________________ AKA Flysmith - Cassville MO
