Brian Sloss Posted March 19, 2008 Posted March 19, 2008 Hey guys, the creek is on the rise in a big way. This looks to be the biggest flood down here in 10 years or so. We are at 21,000cfs and almost 15ft (2 is normal). It is still raining at 8pm Tues and we look to get more tonight and tomarrow. Went to Greer at 3pm and saw the forest service guys and they were wondering if I was the guy in the campground they told to leave earlier when they closed the campground in fear of flooding. When I went back at 6:30 the guy didn't move and his camper and tent were in about 2 ft of water, but he was not there that I could tell. The campground and parking lot were under water. You may want to go elsewhere if you are planning on coming this way this weekend. I'll post pics tomarrow from 6:30 tonight. www.elevenpointflyfishing.com www.elevenpointcottages.com (417)270-2497

Any chance it will clear by then? Roy
steve l Posted March 19, 2008 Posted March 19, 2008 21 feet & 48,000 cfs! If the graph linked to below accurately reflects flooding history, this is either the first or second highest flood since 1916! http://nwis.waterdata.usgs.gov/mo/nwis/pea...;agency_cd=USGS July normal is 600 or so cfs? That means there is the equivalent of 80 rivers flowing through right now.
Brian Sloss Posted March 19, 2008 Author Posted March 19, 2008 Unless you just want to see a major flood on the receding side, don't waste your time, I have never seen the river this high. Heard the Riverton bridge at 160 was under water, gonna go find out for myself. Tried to upload pics last night and having dial up it failed. Will take pics today and try to post them. www.elevenpointflyfishing.com www.elevenpointcottages.com (417)270-2497
Mark Posted March 19, 2008 Posted March 19, 2008 WOW!! That's hard to imagine. But as our esteemed angler, Al Agnew, pointed out on the "General Discussion" board, a flood of this magnitude is bound to change the river for the better. Smaller floods may tend to fill in some holes with gravel, but with a flood this size, the massive volume of water that will be going over ledges and around bends is bound to wash out some deep holes. I know the hole below Horseshoe Bend has filled in with sand and gravel in just the past couple of years. I guessing the river will be different in some places when it gets back to normal flow.
Brian Sloss Posted March 19, 2008 Author Posted March 19, 2008 It did not cover the riverton bridge, but it is only a few feet from the bottom. Only the roof of the bathroom there is showing at the boat launch area. Greer is covered completely and highway 19 is impassable on the north side. Talked to someone who was up there at night last night said the north side of the bridge had a little water coming over the top. Wonder if that camper that wasn't moved is down river now. The forest service told them to move it. That person has got to be kicking themselves for not listening. Can't seem to get pics uploaded, so sorry I can't show you guys any. www.elevenpointflyfishing.com www.elevenpointcottages.com (417)270-2497
jdmidwest Posted March 20, 2008 Posted March 20, 2008 Brian, I noticed that when I upload pics on dialup, it doesn't show them till you preview or post, and then they are there. I always shrink down to 640x480 before posting. Talk to Lilley and see what the problem is. It should definately help the river and the gravel bars that have been disappearing on it. It has been a while since the bridges were closed at Greer and 142. I know it needs it over here too, alot of streams were choked by trees that have caved in to the rivers and blocked the streams. I bet most have been straightened out or washed out with this one. Of course there may be some nasty log jams in bends now. The gauges around here ended up with around 12 inches in the 24 hour period. "Life has become immeasurably better since I have been forced to stop taking it seriously." — Hunter S. Thompson
Members smbass43 Posted March 20, 2008 Members Posted March 20, 2008 I've got the pictures from Brian, but unfortunately the files are too big to upload. I will keep trying. Any suggestions?
WebFreeman Posted March 20, 2008 Posted March 20, 2008 make they smaller As jd said, 640x480 is plenty big for the web.
