Kyle Posted March 25, 2008 Posted March 25, 2008 Was thinking about making a trip down this weekend, but really don't want to fish in the stained water. Will it be cleared up by the weekend, or is would Montauk be a better option? I have a couple of buddies that are new to fly and trout fishing and I am trying to put them in the best possible situation. I am fairly certian I can catch a few, but if I can put them on some fish I feel like I will have a better chance of them wanting to go again. Also heard thery are calling for rain in STL wed and thurs and didn't know if there was supposed to be any there. Thanks for the help Kyle
Paola Cat Posted March 25, 2008 Posted March 25, 2008 The spring's pumping out the muddy water. It'll be 1-2 weeks before BSSP clears up if they don't get anymore heavy rains. Check out http://www.missouritrout.com/weavers/report.html. They say they'll post a report if it starts to clear-up. Looks like they're calling for rain down there on Wednesday and Thursday. You can also check the BSSP flow at http://waterdata.usgs.gov/nwis/uv?cb_00065...ite_no=06923500. I was down there on Friday and it was ugly. I'm sure it's improving every day. PC. Cheers. PC
Members BKB Posted March 25, 2008 Members Posted March 25, 2008 I am leaving tomorrow morning and spending 2 days at Bennett...will let you know when I get back on Thursday. BTW....anyone have any suggestions on how/what to fish on my flyrod? Im relatively new to flyfishing....I'm bringing my spinning rod just in case, but would really like to use my flyrod as much as possible.
jdmidwest Posted March 25, 2008 Posted March 25, 2008 Look for reports for Montauk also, river gauge shows it is still running high. It may be muddy also. There was alot of water that entered all of the systems last week and it will take some time for it to filter thru. It may be some time due to current ground saturation and rainfalls. You can still catch fish in murky water, you just have to adjust your techniques. Darker color flies, bigger flies, streamers. Look for seams where the fish will hang out to get away from current. Paola Cat Posted March 25, 2008 Posted March 25, 2008 BKB .... Seams, eddies, areas of transition from faster current to slower current. Don't overlook areas that might be close to the bank. With the conditions like they are, it's very important to read the water correctly. A majority of the water is not worth fishing. You'll also have to fish deeper. I like to give them something they can see in these kind of conditions. I used peach and apricot supreme globalls last weekend with some success. Once you find them, they will be stacked up and you can take fish on repeated casts. PC Cheers. PC
Members BrowningFisherman Posted March 26, 2008 Members Posted March 26, 2008 Any day at Bennett is worth it, its not gonna be what you're used to but they will bite, I just got back and I was still able to catch em, just had to go about 5 ft down with a bright tri-color glo-ball
