My son and I are going to build ourselves new fly rods. Something else to do I suppose.

I am wondering where I could find quality components or kits or ect...

Anyone got any suggestions???

I have dealt with Madison River Fishing Company on buying high end components and supplies. They sometimes have excellent sales on blanks and seats and the like. Check them out!

How difficult is it to really build a rod? I've been thinking about doing it for a couple of years, but I don't want to spend a bunch of money on a quality blank and beautiful seat, to only screw up the rod and be disappointed. Is it just a matter of putting in the time to do things right, or are there things that really need to be done to make a quality custom? I'm just afraid to make the investment without knowing what will turn out.

Mizzou, if you use a preturned handle, or know someone that can turn one, its easy in my opinion. There's a ton of information on the net now on building one. The biggest thing in my opinion is wrapping the guides, but thread is cheap, so if one isn't right you can always redo it, no harm done. Putting the Flex coat on requires the that the rod be turned for a period of time, and mechanical is by far the easiest, but it can be done by hand.

Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.

I agree with Wayne. And you answered it yourself. Putting in the time to do things right. The best online resource for me is www.rodbuilding.org

Cabela's has a catalog with about everything you need for building Fly rods and spinning rods.

The Catalog is "Tackle Craft 2006" call them at: 1-800-237-4444 or their web page is www.cabelas.com

I have bought many rods from Cabelas over the years. They have several good rods that are very reasonable.

Earlier I indicated they have a pamplet titled "Cabelas Rod building instructions." They include this pamplet with any of the rod kits. I did see some of these pamplets in the Cabelas store in Kansas City recently.

We'll be glad to help answer your questions in this forem.

Assembling a graphite rod isnt very difficult. Online sources are pretty good, but if your in St. Louis, Tom Hargrove is a good resource for advice, components, quality cork, etc. and the custom rods he makes are works of art. He also does a rod building course for St. Louis County Parks every spring. Might be worth enrolling in. Cheers.

O. K. I will try again. My last reply apparently didn't take.

You should contact Cabelas and ask for "Cabelas Tackle Craft 2006 catalog." This catalog contains a full range of Rods and supplies for making Fly rods and Spinning rods.

There are several selections for rods that won't break your bank account. I have been quite pleased with the rods I have built.

Contact Cabelas at: 1-800-237-4444 or email at: www.Cabelas.com

I recently bought my stuff at this place:

http://www.schneidersrods.com/

They are located in Mtn Home, so I just walked in and started shopping. Really nice people with the stuff I needed at a good price.

I am really excited! I am gonna build me a 3 wt so I won't snap those *%^# 7x fluoro tippets so often!

Thanks to everyone.
