brittsnbirds Posted April 7, 2008 Posted April 7, 2008 drath- You asked what I use for the body on the smaller JD's. Depending on how small I go I will use micro chenille or I will will use the remainder of the marabou (once I tie the tail in) and hurl it up the hook for the body. You can make it as ratty or clean as you want by picking the marabou. Sometimes I just use a little marabou tail and hurl the body and tie it off. That's it. No bead or jig just the marabou. It is a ratty looking little thing but it works. Pat
Members drath Posted April 7, 2008 Author Members Posted April 7, 2008 That’s a good idea with the marabou britts. I may try to find some dubbing in that color too. -D
Members drath Posted May 1, 2008 Author Members Posted May 1, 2008 Ok, I’m heading down for a quick trip to BSSP Monday (5-5) after work. I should be able to get in a few hours Monday and a full day Tuesday before heading back home. I’ll be bringing about a dozen of my new #16 JD bead heads (6 with chenille bodies and 6 with peacock) so I’ll let ya know how they work. I know the water is up, fast, and has a little color to it. I was wondering if anyone has any advice other than what I’ve read on Weavers website. Thanks -D
zsmith62 Posted May 1, 2008 Posted May 1, 2008 If they end up doing any good, you should post a pic or two... Zach Smith
trout fanatic Posted May 2, 2008 Posted May 2, 2008 drath. I tie something very similar to the jd. I use a size 14 long shank nymph hook. I start with a bead chain eye that I have pre-dipped in whatever ugly dollar general fingernail polish i can find (I use green a lot). After tying it on, I simply tie on a short sparse marabou tail (with or without flash) and a short chenille body and I'm done. Works well on a variety of fish. PS: I have "invented" a ton of flies over the years only to find out later that someone beat me to it by a hundred years or so, but i don't let that stop me. Invent away!
brittsnbirds Posted May 2, 2008 Posted May 2, 2008 drath- use the bead and tie up some white mini jigs. It was about the only thing I could get bit on a week ago. Pat
Thom Posted May 2, 2008 Posted May 2, 2008 Pat: I am leaving tomorrow for BSSP and white mini's are a part of the arsenal I have tied up. Some on 1/80 white jig heads and some on 2487 16 with a tungsten bead with a small white chenele and very sparse tag of maribou on the tail. Seems to alway work at bssp. Also some blk/yellow jigs,y2k, bright egg flys, and JD's Kids day so I hope I find a stretch of stream to throw in. If I have time with all else going on I will try to post some pics when I get home. Members drath Posted May 2, 2008 Author Members Posted May 2, 2008 Zach: I’ll try to get some pics posted either way. Trout Fanatic: I hear what you’re saying. That’s part of the fun that comes with sitting in front of a vice; “inventing” or being creative. I’m not saying I’m the first to invent anything but my goal was to come up a fly that allows me to fish something JD-ish under a Dry Indicator fly. I’ll know if I achieved that Monday evening. Hehehe Pat and Thom: I hope to be able to get some more “vice time” before I leave and I’ll heed your advice on the white mini’s. Thanks Guys Man, I can’t wait to hit the stream. -D
Members BrowningFisherman Posted May 2, 2008 Members Posted May 2, 2008 I tie something very similar except I don't paint the head I just use tungsten. But the olive tail and spun peacock body are very much the same, I have used it at bennett but it works better at montauk, I actually like to use it as the bottom of a double dropper rig
