Wayne SW/MO Posted April 7, 2008 Posted April 7, 2008 Biologically there is no difference removing a female from the population in june, august,November or April While I agree in principal, this year is an exception I believe. Whites need a good strong flow to have a successful spawn, and this year seems to be one of those. If the spawn this year is exceptionally successful, the increase in numbers could keep numbers high for years, even when the flow isn't what it should be. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
crappiefisherman Posted April 7, 2008 Posted April 7, 2008 Im sorry but I clean crappie and some times they have eggs in them.Im not sure how to tell if they have early or late egg sacks. But I do know one thing, by the time I see the eggs its too late to shove them back in. [ [
Project Healing Waters Posted April 8, 2008 Posted April 8, 2008 Are you sure - never? :) :) Well, there was that ONE fella... http://www.projecthealingwaters.org
Sam Posted April 8, 2008 Posted April 8, 2008 "Hmmmm do you keep crappie that are full of eggs?" ------------------- You bet'cha. There's not much C & R in crappie fishing, and there are exactly two reasons I throw a crappie back. (1) If it's under 10", and (2) if I've already got a limit of 15. Why? Because if I throw a keeper back, that guy following the bank 30 yards behind me will keep it - and so would the guy after him, and the guy after him. Throw keeper crappie back? C'mon - there wouldn't be anything on the plate next to the 'taters and onions. lol
Members pt1 Posted April 8, 2008 Members Posted April 8, 2008 Sounds to me like you're one of those that if you could, you would make all fishing catch and release. No, we're not starving, but I happen to enjoy eating all of the varities of species in our lakes and waterways around here. I'm one that thinks that we already have too many restrictions on fishing and keeping what you can catch as it is. I do respect your opinion however because everybody is entitled to their own. I think not saying anything at all would be a better choice. You really wouldn't like me; because if it's legal; I keep it no matter what. I have a wife and three boys and we all love to eat fish and can't afford to pay store price for catfish and trout fillets; and I just can't go the cheap ocean fish and tilapea. I do not appreciate the remark trying to make me look like a fool; you can plainly read the sentence that I wrote and I simply didn't say; "sounds like you don't want nobody to keep no fish"; as I know you're referring to me.

This is for Mr."healing waters"; I really didn't appreciate that made up smarty pants comment what so ever. Everyone is entitled to their opinion on this forum; but you do not need to be trying to make others look foolish; or making somebody sound like dumb hick that doesn't know his but from a hole in the ground. I am extensively educated and certainly wasn't looking for a fight of words on here. I simply offered my opinion; you don't have to like mine. On a further note, there are more important issues than somebody taking under length limit fish or a few to many to eat. What about the idiot cooking meth in the public forest behind the banks where you are fishing. Conservation laws are too restrictive and people have taken it way too far with trying to play woods and water superheroes. If you are obeying the laws and no one is endangering you or your family and they are on public land; then don't worry about what others are doing and mind your own business. That is the job of the water patrol and conservation department. I'm sorry, I just wasn't brought up in a catch and release or conservation minded family. I do; however; believe in obeying the fish and game laws despite being in disagreement with many of them.
Jeremy Rasnick Posted April 8, 2008 Author Posted April 8, 2008 The bottom line of my original report was to give a head up as to what to expect on the water conditions. Hope everybody got a little piece of the pie. It has been a great year for whites and will continue. Things were really hot in swan tonite. I will leave it to phil to post a more detailed report......Speaking of crappie eggs and to change the subject a little bit.......I love to eat crappie eggs, lets talk about eating crappie eggs
zander Posted April 8, 2008 Posted April 8, 2008 I think we should all take a breath. As for me, there was only one time in my life when I literally had to fish or not eat a lot. It was called grad school. Thank goodness the big cats had moved in to feed on the crappie. Consequently, that period also got me burnt out on cleaning fish. I practice catch and release not for any conservation of resources reason, instead it is for conservation of energy reasons......I'm lazy and most times would not want to bother with it. I still keep the odd fish, put some on a stringer only to let them go if I don't get anymore by the end of the day. That being said, hats off to catch and release people since it at least provides the chance of being caught again by others and helping in recruitment. I wish I could say I do it for the noble reasons but it is just laziness for me. I for one am not hurting the white bass population at all this year, you have to catch them first and the three w's aren't helping, work, weather, and the wife.
