Members roundtrout Posted February 27, 2006 Members Posted February 27, 2006 Dave, I've done the beadhead thing on a little larger size hooks, 10 & 12. Gold or tungsten beadhead emulating the white floss jig that you find at the shop and elsewhere. I would think the white marabou would work too. Good luck! Bob Bob
CaptainT16 Posted February 27, 2006 Posted February 27, 2006 I would have to say that my top choices would be a Crackleback, Scuds, sowbugs, san juan worms, adams, and minijigs seem to be the best that I come across. Usually can't go wrong with any of those in the fly box. "He told us about Christ's disciples being fisherman, and we were left to assume...that all great fishermen on the Sea of Galilee were fly fisherman and that John, the favorite, was a dry-fly fisherman." - Norman Maclean-A River Runs Through It
Members Flyfishing Buddha Posted February 28, 2006 Members Posted February 28, 2006 My top 5 are the "john deere", white floss and bead spread mini jigs, 1/80th or smaller, the glo-ball in original 3color, white/red dot or chartruse/red dot and the renegade or crackleback. RE the renegade what My uncle told me to do is use size 12-16 renegade and about 12-18" above pinch on a bb shot. Use this at any fast moving water like the shoots at the bottem of the hatchery into Zone 2. pitch it up and let it drift back down.
Members dp1kinobe Posted March 6, 2006 Members Posted March 6, 2006 my all time number on fly at bennett is the pheasant tail. I bring 2 sizes a size 12 and a size 18 in the same pattern. Start with the 12 and work down to the 18. Since I've used this strategy I've always been really productive in zone 2. Hope this helps, Good luck and happy fishing
Members GregSTC Posted April 18, 2006 Members Posted April 18, 2006 Dry Flies: #16 Mossquito,#16 BWO, #18 Renagade, #18 Grifiths Gnat, #16 Royal Wulf Nymphs: #18 BHPT, #18 BHCJ, Red San Juan Worm, John Deer Mini Jig, Beadspread Mini Jig Fish all nymphs on the bottom. 7x Fluorocarbon!
Kansas Fly Fisher Posted April 18, 2006 Posted April 18, 2006 GregST: I'm drawing a blank. What is the BHCJ? I understand it's a bead head, just can't get the CJ part. Thanks. John Born to Fish, Forced to Work KSMEDIC.COM
Snow Fly Posted April 18, 2006 Posted April 18, 2006 KCF: Copper John's! I would throw in a Crackle Back & PMD's for Dries and also add a Pheasant Tail with the nymph's. Might want to try a #12 Crackle Back with a PT dropper or Super Scud as a dropper in the riffles below the old arch bridge and in zone #1 upstream of the gage house. Need to use 7x Fluorcarbon stream looks like drinking water. "God gave fishermen expectancy, so they would never tire of throwing out a line"
Kansas Fly Fisher Posted April 18, 2006 Posted April 18, 2006 Snow Fly: I should have know that! Copper John is one of my favorite's. I must have had a "senior" momemt. I just couldn't put it together. Your right about the Crackleback. I've never had much luck with the pheasant tail. I do like the zebra midge though. John Born to Fish, Forced to Work KSMEDIC.COM
Snow Fly Posted April 30, 2006 Posted April 30, 2006 KFF: I for some reason never remember Copper John's myself. I guess my mind was in the right file at the time. At BS on Thurs. 4/27 did well on top water in afternoon in the riffles below the stone bridge. Water is getting lower all the time. It has been low so long that people that started fishing there in the last 6 years probably think the present level is normal.
