Root Admin Phil Lilley Posted April 18, 2008 Root Admin Posted April 18, 2008 Leonard's report on outlet #1 and what I see this morning on my banks prompts me to post this question- was this new layer or sediment distribed over the whole upper lake, the whole lake? If it is, I would think our scud population is gone. I would also think the midge population should increase, what little I know about them. May be too early to tell. The water here, although being released from the turbines, is clouded, not clear like it should be. This could be caused by 2 things - Table Rock is cloudy even down to 130 feet deep and coming thru the turbine this way or sediment is being picked up off the bottom as it flows down from the dam. Regardless, this event is going to affect Taneycomo for a long time.

What would happen without the scuds and how long do you think it would take them to become re-established. Sorry for all the questions but I am sure your post is of concern to all of us who love the lake and the trout there. Thanks.
Root Admin Phil Lilley Posted April 18, 2008 Author Root Admin Posted April 18, 2008 At this point I have no idea. I'm still catching up from being gone. I'm only going from Leonard's post and what I see out my window.
Wayne SW/MO Posted April 18, 2008 Posted April 18, 2008 I'm sure the effect won't be positive. Table Rock is an unnatural part of the river and can't deposit replacements for what is washed away. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
taxidermist Posted April 18, 2008 Posted April 18, 2008 Taneycomo is also an unnatural part of the river. No damed lakes are natural so then management becomes a different sort of thing. Speculating on the effects is something noone really knows yet. Best bet is wait and time will tell as we all know. The effects on warm water lakes of White River are yet to be decided too.
Trav Posted April 18, 2008 Posted April 18, 2008 Hey Phil, The Flood Sludge(as I will glamorously name) is about an inch thick down here. Maybe a little less. As I have stated in other posts, The lake has filled in about 2 feet under my dock. And I am on the channel side. Havent looked at the depths under Rockaways docks yet, but if I were to guess it is significant. I did find something curious under my dock that I cant say as I have ever seen on Lower Taney. I stirred out about 50 or 60 (What looked like)Gizzard Shad. That in itself isnt the surprise, the fact that not one of them were under 3 pounds surprised me. A couple had to have been 6 pounds easily. Anyway, I can bet they took the water slide ride last weekend. "May success follow your every cast." - Trav P. Johnson
zander Posted April 18, 2008 Posted April 18, 2008 There might be a turtle population explosion then. It makes you wonder besides flathead cats, what in Table Rock could eat those big gizzard shad. I read on the MDC website they have stocked hybrids in Truman and LOZ because they could eat the bigger gizzard shad.
Troutn Posted April 18, 2008 Posted April 18, 2008 3 lb shad?Huh??? I'd like to take a look at one of those, I can't say that I have ever seen a 3+lb shad.
Root Admin Phil Lilley Posted April 18, 2008 Author Root Admin Posted April 18, 2008 We have had large gizzard shad in the upper end of the lake for years. Also flat head and other warm water fish. I don't think anything washed over the dam would change the Taney population of fish that much. 3 lb shad... don't know that much about shad but I wouldn't assume they came over the dam. Could have but I doubt it. There's can't be much more below the docks in Rockaway... there wasn't much there to begin with. I assume it's gravel under you dock? Not mud?
WebFreeman Posted April 18, 2008 Posted April 18, 2008 Wikipedia says they can get to 2kg and 57 cm (stupid metric system), which is about 22 inches and 4.4 lbs.
