Chief Grey Bear Posted April 28, 2008 Posted April 28, 2008 Kyle and I took a float trip today on a section of Shoal Creek. The water was fast and high, but it was clear. We caught some really nice bass today. All were fat largemouth except one really nice brownie. Looks like things are starting to heat up on the creeks and rivers. If we can ever get a few days of dry weather, maybe this water can go down and make for some even better fishing. 'Tis the season boys, lets go get 'em. ollie Posted April 28, 2008 Posted April 28, 2008 I'm guessing the water had a good clip to it! I went down to Hickory to see how things were and it was clear, but moving along at a good speed. "you can always beat the keeper, but you can never beat the post" There are only three things in life that are certain : death, taxes, and the wind blowing at Capps Creek!
creek wader Posted April 28, 2008 Posted April 28, 2008 I did pretty good on the Maries River last week, it's already cleared up and the smallie bite is on, also, it had good water and flowing at a good clip. It's smallie time on the smaller streams. wader
Buzz Posted April 29, 2008 Posted April 29, 2008 Shoal Creek was really moving, but the color was perfect. We caught most of the fish in the slack to semi-slack water. I didn't get a smallmouth bite,fast water or otherwise. Chief caught a very nice smallie on a wigglewart, but it was away from the faster water also. Most all of the largemouth were in or around the slack water with some kind of cover like downed trees. All of the fish I caught hit the Woolyhawg tail on a jig. I only had one hit and miss on the spinnerbait, but went back with the hawgtail and caught him. I think if we had taken the anchor we might have had better luck in the faster water. And that was due solely because the water was so fast. I believe that even if we were able to stop and fish it, the water was just moving to fast to effectively and properly fish it. I am also afraid that some of my favorite logs to hit are gone too. I think next time we will slow down a little and spend more time. But we did get a late start too. I think it was in the neighborhood of 1:00 before we set sail. Buzz, I hope that is about a 50lb anchor!!! We may need it.
