Rolan Duffield
When purchasing thread for wrapping guides, make certain it's size "A" thread. Normally this is made of Nylon. Do not use standard fly tying thread as it's too small, difficult to use here and probably isn't strong enough to hold the guide. You should taper the front end of the guide before using it. The end should be tapered to a knife edge so that the thread easily walk up on the guide. Also make certain you have control of the tension on the thread when wrapping the guide. Either run the thread through a book to apply some tension or use spring tension against one side of the spool. There's one in the Cabelas catalog. Part # HT-31-5950 Price $4.99 that should work. Danoinark
If you are using single foot guides, don't forget to use a locking wrap on the footless side to finish it off. Kansas Fly Fisher
I love this new topic! Building a fly rod is my next great adventure. I've been reading up (and getting very confused) so this topic will help out a lot. My question . . . what's the chance of having a rod building class similiar to the fly tying class? I live almost 3 hours away, but with the planning I sure would make the trip for a class. Brian K. Shaffer
I've used the book method a few times.. I think it works good enough for thread tension control.. and I like it best cause its more 'old school'. I use only Gudebrod A threads too.. and I know have a finishing motor to turn the rod while in limbo. In fact I use A thread for some of my midge patterns too.. best fishes - Brian Just once I wish a trout would wink at me! ozarkflyfisher@gmail.com I'm the guy wearing the same Simms longbilled hat for 10 years now.
