Members Growler Posted April 29, 2008 Members Posted April 29, 2008 Hey all, have to purchase a new deep cycle battery for my boat. Just curious, what is your favorite and why? I have heard good buzz about Optima brand, and have had good luck myself with DiHard (Sears). I would especially like to hear from Bill & the other guides. A good warranty would be a bonus, because as we all know, an occasional lemon does pop-up. I'm not loaded, so a good value is appreciated also. Thanks for your input in advance. G
Trav Posted April 29, 2008 Posted April 29, 2008 I have used Nautilus and Die hards. I have found that marine Batts from O Rieleys work just as good. "May success follow your every cast." - Trav P. Johnson
Daddy Carp Posted April 29, 2008 Posted April 29, 2008 Most won't talk about it, except "in the closet", because it's not "cool" since the bass pro network pushes name brand batterys, but I have used them for years and am very pleased with the performance and power retension. That is the yellow, marine deep cycle batterys that WALMART sells. The big one is around $68 and is guar. replacement for 18 mo. I normally get about 3 years out of them on my trolling motor. It is about the same as the Alstate so far as lasting before replacement. THE MAIN THING is, I can buy 2 for the price of an Optima or Die Hard so that gives me about 6 years of service for the price of 1 name brand "hype" battery. I may not look as macho or have braggin-rights at the bass-club smoker but I will go just as far, just as fast and for just as long for 1/2 the cost (besides, I don't smoke anyway). Nothing wrong with the Die Hard or Optima, I'm just too cheap to throw away the price of a good rod for machoism! God bless & Good luck...........The ole tight-wad, D.C.
Trav Posted April 29, 2008 Posted April 29, 2008 I paid 72 bucks for my last battery from O reillys. Your right DC, A Battery is one of those items that as long as it works it doesnt matter. "May success follow your every cast." - Trav P. Johnson
Members bill kelley Posted April 29, 2008 Members Posted April 29, 2008 I've been using Interstate batterys. Marine deep cycle, however, I go to the local distributor and by a blemish. usually just a nick in the outside cover. Battery costs about 30 bucks and lasts about 3 - 4 years, and still carries the same guarantee as a new one.
Members Growler Posted April 30, 2008 Author Members Posted April 30, 2008 Thanks for your input. I admit, if I was independently wealthy, I'd buy one of each & do a side-by-side test. But, that's also one of the great things about forums like this one, we all get to benifit from each others knowledge. Real life tests, not just advertising hype (and I'm in the ad business!). Thanks again for taking the time to post, you're all right along with what I was thinking also. G

That is the yellow, marine deep cycle batterys that WALMART sells. That is the battery I use too. It's called EverStart. I have had mine about 5 years now and am gonna have to replace her this year. I noticed last year she only wanted to work about a 1/2 a day. Now another year older and a little more feeble, I must replace her. bigredbirdfan Posted May 2, 2008 Posted May 2, 2008 I have used high dollar batteries and "house brand" from Oreillys and Autozone and I have had better results from the house brands. The most important factor I feel is constantly using a trickle charger when not in use. Chad
