Fishin' Freak Posted April 29, 2008 Posted April 29, 2008 I have a few questions about moon phases and the spawn that I hope some of you can help answer. Just how important is the full moon when talking about the spawn? The full moon in April was on the 20th and then the next full moon will be on the 20th of May. I have been told that the three days before and after are the prime time for bass to spawn. Is this true? With the water temps really warming these past 10 days, will many fish go ahead and spawn out these first couple of weeks in May or will many wait for the moon? I am just wanting to get a feel for just how important the moon phases are to the spawn and how it affects the fish. Any help is much appreciated. Thanks
Root Admin Phil Lilley Posted April 29, 2008 Root Admin Posted April 29, 2008 I would think it'd be water temp that would trigger most fish to spawn. Look at crappie and even whites this year. Crappie are still deep and holding off the banks because our winter was so cold and this spring has been cool, not warm. Surface temps will yo-yo up and down but the water below is still pretty cold. But with the temps the way they are, I think it'll be a long and drawn out spawn for both crappie and bass- and whites... they are still spawning. What do you say Don.
Fishing Buddy Don House Posted April 29, 2008 Fishing Buddy Posted April 29, 2008 Yes, I agree with Phil. Warm temp is going to really fire these guys up, moon phases I think it is a trigger also because these fish will really start to eat at night or atleast the bigger fish are really caught here at night during the spawn. Not sure if it is light penetration's into the water or what? Fishing has always been good on a full moon! But I do know these fish will spawn in waves across all sections of the lake for some time to come, or atleast way into may we have a good population of bass. Right now we are catching those pre-spawners moving in right now to spawn, Points are hot right now as these fish follow these points into the spawning areas. Have heard reports of alot of fish on beds, I would bet there are alot more that we can not even see because they are in deeper water. Fishing is just going to get better as the water warms, even flooded these fish are really adapting to water color changes and there new hangouts in the shallows, the spawn will be very good! Trav Posted April 29, 2008 Posted April 29, 2008 I would suspect that in the years to come we bassmen will appreciate this high water. This year could be one of the most successful spawn in the lakes history. As far as moon phases, I absolutely believe bigger bass feed much more aggressively during the full moon. It might just be a confidence thing, but I totally Expect to catch decent fish while night fishing a full moon. "May success follow your every cast." - Trav P. Johnson
Members bojack Posted April 29, 2008 Members Posted April 29, 2008 why is it that POINTS are so important when fishing? what is a secondary point?
