Recipe:

Hook: TMC 200R / or 2303 Sz 4-10

Thread: UTC 70 Fl. Orange

Tail: light elk hair

Body: Fl. Orange Ice Dub (dubbing)

Lower Body: Grizzly Hackle

Wing: light elk hair w/ Krystal Flash

Thorax: Char. Ice Dub (dubbing)

Upper Body: grizzly

Tying Instructions:

Start the thread and wind to the bend. Tie in about half a pencil length of elk hair. Make sure you stack it in a hair stacker before tying it in.

One thing I want to share with you is, if you are tying this step without cutting your hair to size and then tying it in then you are adding an extra step for yourself. What I mean is when you tie that hair in do you see a lot of excess hair that you have to cut after words in the front. If so try to cut it to where only a little of the tips are showing when you go to tie it in. It will save you time and trouble. Look at how much I have in my thumb and forefinger when I go to tie it in. Then when you go to tie in the excess in front there is not too much to tie. This will help the thread build up that would happen if you had to tie in a lot of excess hair with thread wraps. You have to keep small back there so you have a nice tapered look going up the fly. If you notice on stimulator patterns the back where the dubbing starts it goes from small to big with the dubbing. If you have a lot of thread wraps in the back you will not accomplish that look.

Once you have tied down the elk hair you are ready to tie in the Grizzly hackle. You are going to tie the feather in at the tip. It also will be tied in concave. The shinny side will be facing up.

Now you’re going to dud the fly up just past the middle of the shank. Always pay attention to proportions. That is what I see wrong with most patterns that are newly tied. Always look at pictures when learning new flies. It will definitely help you in the long run.

Wrap the feather up to where the dubbing stops. Depending on how you want you fly to sit in the water will determine how many wraps you tie up. I like to wrap about five to six turns.

Tie in about eight strands of krystal flash. Then measure the flash to the end of the elk hair and cut to length. Now your ready to tie in the next section of elk hair.

Measure the next clump to the same size as the krystal flash. Repeat the same step as I illustrated in picture two.

Tie in the next grizzly hackle, but this time you are going to tie in the feather with the fat side instead of the tip side. You want the hackle to tapered to be smaller at the eye.

Now dub the fly up to the eye. You want the dubbing to be dubbed going from big to small. You will not need a bunch so try to grab a small amount of dubbing when putting on the thread. If you are having trouble keeping the dubbing on the thread you are probably dubbing to big of a clump in one area. Try to space it out so when you are dubbing the ball it is small enough to grab the thread when you spin it. Also only go one direction when dubbing on the thread.

Wrap the hackle about three to four turns and whip finish the fly and that’s it. Just make sure you still have enough dubbing showing thru the wraps.
